Dear daughter,
You are a wonderful person and your mother and I think the world of you. It will not be long before you leave home to make your way in the world. Can I please give you some friendly advice? Here are some things that you should never do.
1. Never Look Down Upon Yourself.
You are great and able to achieve great things so believe in yourself. When things go badly, never stop believing. Some girls get upset, blame themselves and lose self-esteem. All kinds of problems can follow.
2. Never Get Obsessed With Your Appearance.
We think you look great (though some of the clothes you wear worry us!). Please be happy with the person ,you are and the body you have. Eat reasonably, take exercise and be healthy. Some girls show too much concern about losing weight or getting the perfect shape. You look fine.
3. Never Compromise Your Personal Safety.
Never put yourself at serious risk. This means that you cannot trust people until you really know them and that sometimes you have to avoid things that look like they might be fun. Never get drunk or take drugs. Unluckily there are some bad people out there and it is best not to take risks.
4. Never Give Less Than Your Best.
We are very proud of what you have achieved so far. You should be proud too. Keep doing well. Keep trying your hardest at everything you do. No one can ask for more than that.
5. Never Forget That Your Parents Love You.
Whatever happens in life, your family will still be your family. Whatever difficulties you meet with, you can always talk to us and we will try to help. We are here for you.

A young woman was driving through the lonely countryside. It was dark and raining. Suddenly she saw an old woman by the side of the road, holding her hand out as if she wanted a lift.
“I can’t leave her out in this weather,” the woman said to herself, so she stopped the car and opened the door.

Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do; once or twice she had looked into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, “and what is the use of the book,” thought Alice, “without pictures and conversations?”
So she was considering in her own mind whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain(雛菊花環(huán)) would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a white rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.
There was nothing so very remarkable in that; but when the rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat-pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take out of it, and burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit- hole under the bush.
The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well.
Down, down, down. Would the fall never come to an end? “I wonder how many miles I’ve fallen by this time?” she said aloud. “I must be getting somewhere near the centre of the earth. Let me see: that would be four thousand miles down, I think. I wonder if I shall fall right through the earth! How funny it’ll seem to come out among the people that walk with their heads downward! The Antipathies, I think—but I shall have to ask them what the name of the country is, you know. ‘Please, Ma’am, is this New Zealand or Australia?’ And what an ignorant little girl she’ll think me for asking! No, it’ll never do to ask.”
Down, down, down. There was nothing else to do, when suddenly, thump! thump! Down she came upon a heap of sticks and dry leaves, and the fall was over.

Smart job-seekers need to rid themselves of several standard myths about interviewing before they start looking for a job. What follows is a list of some of these untruths and some tips to help you do your best at your next interview.
Myth 1: The aim of interviewing is to obtain (means “get”) a job offer.
Only half true. The real aim of an interview is to obtain the job you want. That often means rejecting job offers you don’t want! So before you please an employer, be sure you want the job.
Myth 2: Always please the interviewer
Not true. Try to please yourself. Of course, don’t be hostile—nobody wants to hire someone disagreeable. But there is plainly a muddle ground between being too ingratiating(逢迎)and being hostile.
Myth 3: Try to control the interview
Nobody “controls” an interview. When someone tries to control us, we resent(憎恨)it. When we try to control others, they resent us. Remember you can’t control what an employer thinks of you, just as he can’t control what you think of him. So he is ready to give and take when being interviewed; never control the interview.
Myth 4: Never interrupt the interviewer
Study the style of the effective conversationalists: they interrupt and are interrupted! An exciting conversation always makes us feel free—free to interrupt, to disagree, to agree enthusiastically. Just hang loose. Try being yourself for a change. Employers will either like or dislike you, but at least you’ll have made an impression. Leaving an employer indifferent(冷漠的)is the worst impression you can make.
小題1:To be your natural self in a job interview will__________.
A.make your interviewer angryB.please your interviewer
C.leave an impression on the interviewerD.leave the interviewer indifferent to you
小題2:     For job seekers, efforts to control the interview are likely to __________.
A.a(chǎn)ffect the interviewer’s opinion of them
B.lead to the offer of a job
C.enable them to express themselves fully
D.help to create a favorable image of themselves
小題3:The most important thing to keep in mind when being interviewed for a job is to _________.
A.try to obtain the jobB.reject the job first
C.qualify yourself for the jobD.see if it is a job you want
小題4:The right attitude to a job interviewer is to be _________.

It is not a good idea to stop the actor Richard Griffiths in the middle of a play.During the past year he has stopped performances many times at the National Theatre when mobile phones rang, and he threw out one member of the audience because she failed to turn off her phone.
So when a mobile rang out for the third time during his performance in Alan Bennett’s The History Boys, he spoke angrily to the theatergoer (愛看戲的人), “I am not going to compete with these electronic devices (裝置).”
Griffiths’ actions led to a debate in the UK theatre world over whether phones should be forbidden by law from British theatres, too.Actors have already asked the government to legalise (使合法化) the use of an electronic device that stops mobile phone signals in theatres.
Technology companies have “stopping” devices that send out a high-powered signal on the same frequency (頻率) as a mobile phone, stopping the mobile phone signal.
However, these are forbidden in many countries because they might stop emergency calls from being made.
Rosemary Squire, president of the Society of West End Theatre, said, “Phones are one of the biggest problems theatres face.We should look at equipment that could stop phones or make a London-wide theatre rule.”
Nick Allott, the managing director of Sir Cameron Mackintosh’s theatre group, said, “We would all welcome some ways of stopping ringing phones but doctors and emergency workers need to be connected in a theatre and we mustn’t stop that.” What can we do to solve the problem?
小題1:What can we infer from the second paragraph?
A.Surely Griffiths did better than mobile phones in the theatre.
B.Griffiths didn’t want mobile phones to affect his performance.
C.Griffiths was jealous that mobile phones attracted the audience’s attention.
D.Griffiths taught theatergoers a lesson in the performance as a teacher.
小題2:According to the passage, “stopping” devices ______.
A.have the same functions as mobile phones
B.cause the biggest problem theatres have to face
C.prevent the mobile phones signals from being received
D.help doctors or emergency workers receive emergency calls
小題3:According to Nick Allott, ______.
A.“stopping” devices can make the sound of mobile phones disappear
B.no one except doctors and emergency workers should have mobile phones
C.phones are one of the biggest problems theatres face
D.stopping phones in theatres has some side effects
小題4:What will probably be talked about following the last paragraph?
A.Griffiths’ next performance in theatres.
B.The opinions the public has about the problem.
C.The ways to solve the cellphone problem in public places.
D.The side effects mobile phones have on people.
