Lose-Win is weak. It’s easy to get stepped on. It’s easy to be the nice guy. It’s easy to give in, all in the name of being a peacemaker.
A girl named Jenny once told me about her  16  in the world of Lose-Win during her eighth-grade year before she finally broke  17 :
My  18  with my mom all started one day  19  she said to me sarcastically (諷刺地) “Wow, you’re surely lively today.” I  20  it so literally (字面地) that then and there I decided to close off from her and never  21  back to her. So every time she would say something  22  I disagreed with her I would just say. “Okay, 23 you want, Mom.” But I really got cold quickly. And my 24 began to build. One night I talked to my mom about the school homework and she said, “Oh, that’s  25 ” and then went back to mop the floor.
“Don’t you ever  26 ?” I thought. But I didn’t say anything and stormed off. She had no idea I was  27 upset. She would have been willing to talk to me had I  28  her bow important it was to me.
At last I just blew up. “Mom, this has got to  29 . You tell me everything you want me to do and I just do it because it’s  30  than if fighting. Well, I’m sick of it.” This all came as a  31  to her.
After my blow up, we felt like we were  32  all over in our relationship. But it’s getting better all the lime. We discuss things now and I always  33  my feelings with her.
If you adopt Lose-Win as your basic  34  toward life, then people will wipe their dirty feet on you. You’ll also be  35  your true feelings deep inside. And that’s not healthy.

break out“戰(zhàn)爭、爭吵、火災等爆發(fā)”;break down“出故障”;break up“破裂、關系等中斷”。

start all over表示“重新開始”。
33.A。share ... with ...

Directions: Complete the following passage by using ONE word that best fits the context.
Thanksgiving Day was near. The first grade teacher gave her class   48  fun assignment --- to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful.
Most of the class would celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional goodies of the season. These, the teacher thought, would be the themes of most of her students’ art. And they were. Douglas made a different kind of picture,   49 . When asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand. Nothing else. Just an  50  hand .
His abstract image captured the imagination of his peers. Whose hand could it be? One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers raise turkeys.   51  suggested a police officer’s, because the police protect and care   52  people. Still others guessed it was the hand of God, for God feeds us. And so the discussion went --- until the teacher almost forgot the young artist himself.
When the children had gone on to other assignments, she stopped at Douglas’ desk, bent down, and asked him 53  hand it was. The little boy looked away and said, “It’s yours, teacher.”
She recalled the times she had taken his hand and walked with him here or there, as she had the other students. How  54  had she said, “Take my hand, Douglas, we’ll go outside.” Or, "Let me show you how to hold your pencil.” Or, “Let's do this together.” Douglas was most thankful for his teacher's hand. Brushing aside a tear, she went on with her work.
The story speaks of more than thankfulness. It says something about teachers teaching and parents parenting and friends showing friendship, and how much it means to the Douglases of the world. They might not always say thanks,  55  they'll remember the hand that reaches out.

Some time people call each other “scared-cat”,but have you ever thought about this expression? When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles get tense, and there are changes in the chemicals in its bloodstream.Although the cat doesn't realize this, its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, the animal will do one of two things:It will defend itself,or it will run away as fast as it can.
Something like this also happens to people. When we are excited, angry, scared,or aroused by other emotions (feelings),our bodied go through many physical changes.Out hearts beat faster, and our muscled get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We,too get ready to defend ourselves or run.
Human beings, however, have a problem that animals never face.If we give way to our feelings and let them take over,we can get into trouble.Have you ever said something in anger—or hit somebody—and regretted it later? Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told somebody you were lonely,or said you were in love, and then wished later you had kept your mouth shut? It isn't always wise to express your feelings freely.
Does this mean that it's smarter always to hide our feelings? No! If you keep feelings of anger, sadness, and bitterness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays tense.Physical illness can develop, and you can feel churned up inside. It can actually be bad for your health.(It isn't good to keep pleasant feelings inside either;all feelings need to be expressed.)
Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside don't just go away. It's as if you bought some bananas and stuck them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but before long you'd smell them. And if you opened the cupboard, chances are you'd see little fruit flies hovering all over them. They'd be rotten.
You can try to treat emotions as if they were bananas in the cupboard. You can hide them and you can pretend they don't exist, but they'll still be around. And at last you'll have to deal with them, just like those bananas.

I am so worried about global warming. We need stop cutting down all of the trees so that they can absorb the carbon dioxide. I think the Kyoto Protocol(京都議定書) to stop pollution is a great idea ,and I hope our country will decide to follow it, too.
— Eli S.,10,Texa
People should do all they can to help stop pollution, even if it is something as little as recycling your soda can. Every little thing helps. Maybe schools can put recycling bins in classrooms. Students can bring in all of their cans and bottles and see how many the school can collect.
— Lindsey A.,11, Massachusett
The United States should take action to help stop pollution. Since we are one of the richest countries, we should at least spend a little money to help.
— Aaron z,11,Massachusett
It is not good that the United States is not following the Kyoto Protocol. The U.S. is one of the most pollution emitting (污染物排放)countries in the world. Even if the rest of the world agrees to follow those rules, without the U. S. and its big businesses agreeing, global warming will still be a big problem.
—Augustine S.,11,Ohio
The world needs to learn more about global warming problems. If we do not do something soon then some of Earth’s coolest animals will become extinct. People should use solar power instead of things that pollute the atmosphere!
— Jillian J.,10,Pennsylvania
Global warming is very dangerous, and it must be prevented. Even if people think that it cannot be stopped ,we should  at least try. Stopping global warming is more important than keeping our businesses going. What about the penguins(企鵝)and the polar bears? We can’t just let them become extinct.

In some remote Turkish village of Kuskoy, whistling is as important as talking. In fact, whistling is talking because the villagers speak and sing by whistling.Kuskoy parents begin to teach their boys and girls the language of whistling about the time the children learn to talk.It is considered so important that the village school includes it as one of the subjects taught along with the Turkish language.
This art of communication has taken centuries to develop. The village of Kuskoy spreads out across two hillsides that are separated by a deep valley. The villagers had to find an easy way to communicate where their voices couldn’t carry. They developed a high-pitched (高音的) whistle language that could be transmitted as far as five miles through air.As a result, Kuskoy, which means “bird village” in Turkish, has come to be known as a whistler’s paradise (樂園).
Whistling is so much part of everyday life in Kuskoy that men and women speak, argue, and court (求愛) in whistles. The story was recently told of a young couple who ran away secretly. The news was sent over the “mountain telephone” by whistling. The lover’s adventure was quickly known to all the villagers.
