A well-dressed man came into a famous jewelry shop. He explained that he wished to buy a pearl (珍珠) for his wife's birthday and that the price didn't matter since business had been very good for him that year. After examining a number of beautiful and valuable pearls, he chose a nice black one that cost $5,000.He paid for the pearl, shook hands with the jeweller and left.
A few days later the man returned and said his wife had liked the pearl so much that she wanted another one just like it. It had to be exactly the same size and quality (質(zhì)量) as she wanted a pair of earrings(耳環(huán)) made.“Can you give me any advice on how to get such a pearl? ” said the man. The jeweller replied, “I would say it's nearly impossible to find an exact one like that pearl.”
The rich man asked the jeweller to advertise (登廣告) in the newspapers, and offered $25,000 for the matching pearl. Many people answered the ad (廣告) but nobody had a pearl that was just right. Just when the jeweller gave up hope, a little old lady came in. To his surprise, she pulled the wonderful pearl from her handbag. “I don't like to sell it,” she said sadly, “I inherited (繼承) it from my mother, and my mother inherited it from hers. But now I really need the money.”
The jeweller was quick to pay her before she changed her mind. Then he called the rich man's hotel to tell him the good news. The rich man, however, was nowhere to be found.

Our neighbour's son was getting married at an out-of-town church, and my husband and I were invited. We immediately rushed out to a store, and I bought a nice pink dress with a jacket. The dress was a little tight, but I had a month to go before the June 30 wedding and I would lose a few pounds.
June 29 came and, of course, I hadn't lost a single pound; in fact I had gained two. But I figured a nice new girdle (緊身內(nèi)衣)would cure everything. So on our way out of the city we stopped once again at the store. I ran in and told the clerk I needed a large-size girdle. The shop assistant found the box with the described girdle marked "LG", and asked if I would like to try it on. “Oh, no, a large will fit just right. I needn't try it on.”
The next morning was rather hot, so I waited to get dressed until about 45 minutes before time to go. I opened the box only to find a new girdle in a small size. Since it was too late to find another one and the dress wouldn't fit right without a girdle, a fight broke out in the hotel room between me and the girdle. Have you ever tried to shake 20 pounds of potatoes into a five-pound bag? That's it. Finally my husband, laughing like crazy, got hold of each side and shook me down into it. At once I put on the pink dress, which didn't match my red face well, and was ready to go.
Finally we got to the church. I heard one of the people say that they were having a High Mass. I turned to my husband and asked, "What is a High Mass?" He shrugged his shoulders.
Unfortunately, I learned that this particular mass would last one hour, twenty-two minutes and eight and one half seconds—the priest (神父) was going to bless everything except my girdle.

You are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one another hard. At the start they only fight with their fists(拳頭).But soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the men crashes through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. He is dead!
Of course he isn’t really dead. With any luck he isn’t even hurt. Why ? Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast moving trains, who crash cars of even catching fire, are professionals(職業(yè)).They do this for a living. These men are called stuntmen. That is to say, they perform tricks(騙局).
There are two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. For example, they fall from a high building. However, they do not fall on to hard ground but on to empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress(床墊). Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows, the glass is made of sugar!
But although their work depend on trick of this sort, it also requires a high degree of skill and training. Often a stuntman’s success depends on careful timing(計時).For example, when he is “blown up” in a battle scene, he has to jump out of the way of the explosion(爆炸)just at the right moment.
Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get seriously injured, and sometimes killed. A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff a thousand feet high. His parachute(降落傘)failed to open, and he was killed.
In spite of(盡管)all the risks, this is no longer a profession for men only. Men no longer dress up as women when actresses have to perform some dangerous action. For nowadays there are stuntgirls too!
1.Stuntmen are those who____________
A.Often dress up as actors
B.prefer to lead dangerous lives
C.often perform seemingly dangerous actions
D.often fight each other for their lives
2.Stuntmen earn their living by___________
A.playing their dirty tricks
B.selling their special skills
C.jumping out of high windows
D.jumping from fast moving trains
3.When a stuntman falls from a high building,___________
A.he needs little protection
B.he will be covered with a mattress
C.his life is endangered
D.his safety is generally all right
4.Which of the following is the main factor(因素) of a successful performance?
A.Strength B.Exactness C.Speed D.Carefulness
5.What can be inferred from the author’s example of the Norwegian stuntman?
A.Sometimes an accident can occur to a stuntman.
B.The percentage of serious accidents is high.
C.Parachutes must be of good quality.
D.The cliff is too high.
