How to Make a Good First Impression (印象)

Have you ever met someone and walked away with "fool" or "loser" in mind? Are you afraid of being that someone and having others not like or understand you? Happily, you can get rid of these worries and fears by learning some effective skills on how to make a great and lasting first impression. Let’s get started.

Talk about your interests and hobbies.__ 1.___. It is always a great conversation starter! Ask if they like a specific band or singer. The more you have in common, the easier it will be to carry on the conversation.

Smile. Especially when first meeting someone. It's not necessary to show your teeth, just a meaningful grin(露齒而笑) will do. __2.__, or people will feel you're being fake or that you don't like them.

___3.___. Stay focused on the person you are speaking with and certainly not on anything else to avoid them feeling unappreciated and unwanted. Often if the person has an eye problem, like an eye that turns in, you're put off by this. Instead, focus on the person's nose or mouth.

Have a sense of humor. Born funny people are just themselves and the humor shows. Don’t worry if you are not a born funny person.__ 4.__. Don't keep serious all the time while you are talking to a new friend.

Be yourself. Don't pretend to be someone you're not, or you are stuck with that label forever. Be yourself. That may be what everyone says but it is entirely true!___ 5.__. If somebody finds out you have been lying to him or her, they will be very hurt and it will be hard for them to forgive you easily.

A. Appreciate others

B. Make eye contact.

C. Never lie to anybody about yourself and always be honest.

D. Keep smiling when you are talking to a new friend.

E. People who try to be funny can be funny if they try hard.

F. Be careful not to change from a smile to a straight face too quickly

G. Ask the other person about what their hobbies are

At some point in your life, you will need to ask someone for a favor(幫助), whether it’s at your workplace, at home or in a social setting. If you need a guy to help you with something, there are ways to approach him that will help you ask for that favor.

Find the right guy to ask for a favor.1.For example, if you need someone to look after your house while you are away for a month, don’t select a guy who has a wife and kids and can’t possibly leave them to do you the favor.

2.Even if it’s a small favor, try to find a place that has some privacy(私密性). This is especially important if you’re asking for a favor that you don’t want someone else to hear, such as borrowing money from him.

Use special words to set the table so that he knows you’re in need. 3.Or words such as “I really need your help” are OK. These words give him the chance to understand that he can be of help.

Ask for help in a clear way that expresses what you need, the reason why you need it, and more importantly, the parameters(限定因素) of the favor. For example, if you’re asking him to take you to the airport, tell him when you need him to arrive. If you’re borrowing money from him, say the amount and the reason why you need the money. 4.

Ask for help in such a way that you give him the chance to refuse. 5.If you don’t give him that choice, he may feel as if it’s something he has to do instead of something he wants to do.

A. Find the right place to ask him.

B. Be a kind person who always helps others.

C. The guy must have the ability to help you.

D. Besides, you should tell him when you will give it back.

E. You can say, “I’m really in trouble. Can you help me?”

F. It can be difficult to find the right words to tell what you need.

G. Make it clear that you completely understand if he can’t help you.

You may not pay much attention to your daily elevator ride. Many of us use a lift several times during the day without really thinking about it. But Lee Gray, PhD, of the University of North Carolina, US, has made it his business to examine this overlooked form of public transport. He is known as the “Elevator Guy”.

“The lift becomes this interesting social space where etiquette (禮儀) is sort of odd (奇怪的),” Gray told the BBC. “They are socially very interesting but often very awkward places.”

We walk in and usually turn around to face the door. If someone else comes in, we may have to move. And here, according to Gray, lift users unthinkingly go through a set pattern of movements. He told the BBC what he had observed.

He explained that when you are the only one inside a lift, you can do whatever you want – it’s your own little box.

If there are two of you, you go into different corners, standing diagonally (對(duì)角線地) across from each other to create distance.

When a third person enters, you will unconsciously form a triangle. And when there is a fourth person it becomes a square, with someone in every corner. A fifth person is probably going to have to stand in the middle.

New entrants to the lift will need to size up the situation when the doors slide open and then act decisively. Once in, for most people the rule is simple – look down, or look at your phone.

Why are we so awkward in lifts?

“You don’t have enough space,” Professor Babette Renneberg, a clinical psychologist at the Free University of Berlin, told the BBC. “Usually when we meet other people we have about an arm’s length of distance between us. And that’s not possible in most elevators.”

In such a small, enclosed space it becomes very important to act in a way that cannot be construed (理解) as threatening or odd. “The easiest way to do this is to avoid eye contact,” she said.

1.The main purpose of the article is to _____.

A. remind us to enjoy ourselves in the elevator

B. tell us some unwritten rules of elevator etiquette

C. share an interesting but awkward elevator ride

D. analyze what makes people feel awkward in an elevator

2.According to Gray, when people enter an elevator, they usually ___

A. turn around and greet one another

B. look around or examine their phone

C. make eye contact with those in the elevator

D. try to keep a distance from other people

3.Which of the following describes how people usually stand when there are at least two people in an elevator?

4.The underlined phrase “size up” in Paragraph 7 is closest in meaning to _____.

A. judge B. ignore

C. put up with D. make the best of

We can’t deny that trees are useful to man in three very important ways: they provide him with wood and other products, they give him shade, and they help to prevent drought and floods.

Unfortunately, in many parts of the world man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to draw quick profit from the trees, he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had.

Two thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire. It gained the empire but, without its trees, its soil became hard and poor. When the empire fell to pieces, the country found itself faced by floods and starvation.

Even though a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult for it to persuade the villager to see this. The villager wants wood to cook his food, and he can earn money by making charcoal or selling wood to the townsman. He is usually too lazy or too careless to plant and look after trees. So unless the government has a good system of control, or can educate the people, the forests will slowly disappear.

This does not only mean that the villagers’ sons and grandsons have fewer trees. The results are even more serious. For where there are trees ,their roots break the soil up, allowing the rain to sink in and also bind the soil, thus preventing it being washed away easily, but where there are no trees, the soil becomes hard and poor. The rain falls on hard ground and flows away on the surface, causing floods and carrying away the rich topsoil, in which crops grow so well. When all the topsoil is gone, nothing remains but worthless desert.

1.It’s a great pity that ________.

A. man is only interested in building empires

B. man is eager to profit from trees

C. man hasn’t realized the importance of trees to him

D. man hasn’t found out that he has lost all trees

2.Sooner or later the forests will disappear______

A. unless people are taught the importance of planting trees

B. unless people stop cutting down their trees

C. unless a county has a plenty supply of trees

D. unless the government punishes those who cut trees instead of planting trees

3.The word “bind” in Paragraph 5 means”_________”

A. to make stay together B. to make wet

C. to wash away D. to improve

4.When there is a heavy rain ,trees can help to prevent floods, as they can ___________

A. keep rain from falling down to soft ground

B. cause the soil to allow rainwater to sink in

C. prevent the soil from being washed away

D. make the topsoil stick together
