One day in my class, the children were busy preparing for the coming concert. Suddenly Patty came up to me and said, “Every year I-g-g-g-get to be a quiet student. The other kids are always in a p-p-p-play or something. This year, I w-w-want to recite a p-p-p-poem myself!”
Watching her eager eyes, I had no way to refuse her request. So I had to promise her that she would have a “reciting” part. That promise proved to be very difficult to keep. None of my books had any proper poems for her. So I had to spend most of the night writing a poem for her. It was not excellent, but it was enough to cope with Patty’s speech problem.
From then on, Patty spent a lot of time practicing the reciting every day. With my help, she made great progress. However, an unexpected thing happened when the concert was about to start. The MC(報幕員)came to me with anger, waving his printed program. “There has been a mistake! You have listed Patty for a recitation. That girl can’t even say her own name without stuttering.” Because there was not enough time for explanations, I said to him angrily, “We know what we are doing.”
The concert was going very well. When it was time for Patty’s recitation, the MC again said that Patty would embarrass everyone. Losing patience, I shouted to him loudly, “Patty will do her part. You do yours. Just introduce her number.”
The curtain parted to show Patty, excited and confident. In perfect control, Patty uttered each syllable clearly helped by my gestures. At last, she made her bow, with tears in her eyes.
The curtain closed. At first silence held the audience, then the silence gave way to warm and lasting applause. Patty threw her arms around me and said to me excitedly, “We d-d-d-did it!”
1. What was the challenge for Patty to prepare for the concert?
A. She hadn’t enough time to practice.
B. She wasn’t popular with the students in her class.
C. She couldn’t recite words clearly owing to stuttering.
D. There weren’t proper poems for her at all.
2.The author yelled at the MC loudly because_____.
A. he made a mistake about the printed program
B. he showed no respect for the author
C. he didn’t list Patty for a recitation
D. he was unwilling to include Patty in the performing list
3.From the passage we can learn that_____.
A. where there is a will, there is a way
B. experience is the mother of wisdom
C. strike while the iron is hot

Two years before, I traveled to Brazil and I rented for a car. Unfortunate, I had an accident and hit another car, and I needed to stay in a hospital for at least two week. I called my parents, so I did not tell them what had happened. I knew that they will be worried about myself because I was so farther away, and that my mother would not sleep if she knew. Therefore, I told them interested stories and how I was enjoying Brazil. As a result, nobody knew truth. I still think that it was the right thing to do.

Cleverness is a gift while kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy---they’re given after all. Choice can be hard.
I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2300 percent per year. I’d never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me, I had just turned 30 years old , and I’d been married for a year, I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn’t work since most start-ups don’t , and I wasn’t sure what to expect, MacKenzie told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I’d been a garage inventor, I’d always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.
I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people, and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said, “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn’t already have a good job.” That logic made some sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but ultimately, I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn’t think I’d regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision to not try at all.
After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice, For all of us, in the end, we are our choice.

3.We can know from the passage that ______.
A. the boss thought the idea was suitable for the author

D. the author might go back to his boss if he failed
4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

While students in Yinchuan are quite used to clear skies, Beijing teenagers are not so lucky. As another warm winter approaches, the city can expect the normal clouds of smoke caused by air pollution.
But things may start to improve soon. The government is co-operating with a US-based environmental protection agency to update existing buses and trucks with clean fuel technology. The new technology could reduce air pollutants in existing diesel engines(柴油機)by 40 percent. The programme will begin by testing buses in Beijing to see if the technology can be applied to them.
“We encourage the development of public transports. But at the same time we need to reduce pollution from them, ”said an official.
Efforts are being made to improve the capital’s environment with tighter controls on emissions(排放). Some heavily polluting factories and construction sites, such as those owned by the steel giant Shougang Group, have been asked to cut production in November and December or be closed.
Beijing was the third polluted city in the world at the end of last century, according to the UN. But thanks to recent measures, the capital has made some progress. Last year 224 clear days were rated as having good air quality. In 1998 the air quality index(指數(shù))gave just 100 days as good.
“I am glad to see an improvement, ”said a senior 1 boy living in the northwest of Beijing. “Compared to other places, the air quality of Beijing is still worrying though. I hate pollution. Once I was riding my bike in the morning when I almost had a traffic accident because I couldn’t see a car only metres away from me in fog. ”
In early October, the skies were covered by such a thick fog that a display show by the visiting French Air Force was called off.
Rapid development, industry, traffic fumes and sandstorms from the desert all contribute to the city’s bad air.

A. Clean fuel technology will be used in public transports.
B. Some factories have been asked to cut production.
C. Some construction sites have been told to be closed.
D. A display show of airplanes has been called off.
3.We can infer from the passage that, with the aim of being an ecological city, .
A. far more still needs to be done
B. nothing else needs to be done
C. all traffic has to be closed
D. the development of the city has to be slowed down
4.Which of the following is NOT correct according to the passage?
A. Beijing’s air quality is getting worse and worse.
B. Rapid development, industry, traffic fumes and sandstorms are all the causes of bad air quality.
C. People see clouds of smoke in the sky in the winter of Beijing.
D. The government is making efforts to stop air pollution.
