完形填空(共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)
One day a few years ago we had a guest of the uninvited variety. In fact, it was a bird,   1 a sparrow.
“What’s that?” I asked when I first heard the gentle thumping(重?fù)袈?. “It sounds like Joe is outside playing basketball,” my wife, Anita, said. She   2  and listened more devotedly. “It’s coming from the  3 .” she said. “Maybe it’s one of the little kids.”
We rushed out the door. Jonathan, our youngest, was  4 to make trouble. “If he’s making holes in the wall again…” I said as I searched there. No children       5  . But there was that  6  again, coming from right up there.
And that’s when I  7  the sparrow. It was flying  8 just inches below the ceiling. It was  9 trying to get out, but couldn’t see that the way out wasn’t up, but down 10  the open door. So the bird continued  11  its wings and hitting its head against the  12 .
“Poor thing,” Anita said. “It must be  13  .”
“Well, maybe it’s because of us,” I said as I moved toward it. I tried to show the bird how to glide(滑翔) down to get outside, but that only seemed to  14   it more. “Why don’t we just 15 for a few minutes?” Anita suggested. “I’m sure he’ll    16 eventually.” So we went back into the house, where we continued to hear the ongoing  17  .Then suddenly, it was silent. We looked into the garage, and our uninvited guest was gone.
“See?” Anita said. “I told you he’d succeed.”
“Yeah,” I said. “But how many knocks on the head did it 18  him?”
I’ve thought about that little sparrow through the years. Just like that sparrow, we often meet situations we don’t know how to  19 . Born to go upward, we don’t even consider the possibility that something good might happen if we stop flapping(拍打)around and just glide  20 a little bit.

Once upon a time, a man was walking on a mountain when he found an incredible cave with all kinds of treasure inside it. So he gave up his job, his home, and his friends, and spent all his time guarding the cave.
He was so dedicated to it that he hardly ate or drank, and before long he fell ill. One day, when he could hardly move at all, he decided to share the treasure.
He crawled(爬)into the cave to get a handful of jewels, but discovered, to his horror, that it was empty except for a small emerald(綠寶石). The man took it, and gave it to the first person he came by, a woman.
Then an old man came by. “What bad luck!” the man said. “Just a moment ago I gave a woman the last of the treasure I was guarding.”
“Are you sure there is nothing left?” the old man asked.
The man took him into the cave, where they found a chest with jewels and some bags of gold. The man was shocked, and the old man explained to him, “At last! At last someone has broken the spell(咒語)of this cave. This is the Cave of Treasure, and you’re the first to have passed its great test. Many have dedicated their lives to this cave, only to end up realizing there was nothing here…”
“And why does this happen?” the man asked.
“This magic cave has only as many riches as your own heart. When someone discovers it, the cave is filled with treasure, but later, when they have devoted themselves to guarding the treasure, their hearts empty, as does the cave. The only way to fill it is by filling your heart with all that is good, as you did by giving the woman that last jewel.”
From that day on, the man understood that it was better to share than to keep. Thanks to the cave and the old man, he became noble and generous.

小題4:Which of the following is TRUE, according to the passage?
A.The old man had devoted himself to it before.
B.The old man was the first to break the spell.

I was eleven years old, waiting for my exam at Saraswati Vidyalaya, my school in Nagpur. “No. 12, please come forward.” Kirti, a very fat girl from my class, stepped ahead. I heard my classmates laughing and so I tried to stop them with my eyes. But my good intentions were mistaken. The next morning, my teacher, Mrs. Kamble, told me, “Ashwini, I’ve received a complaint about you.” I was shocked. The girl I was protecting thought I’d been laughing at her.
I tried to explain but the teacher refused to hear me out. She punished me by making me stand by the door. I knew I was right. Such punishment to a class topper was simply unheard of. But, slowly, my pride disappeared. Instead of being angry, I understood the other students who have been punished at times. For the first time, I felt humbled (謙遜的).
Three years later, I was in the math class. Mr. Prabhuraman, wrote an equation (方程式) — one he’d taught us the day before — on the blackboard. “Anyone who doesn’t know how to solve this,” he said, “please leave the class at once.” I knew I could solve only the first two steps. But my pride made me stay there. Unfortunately, the one who was asked to solve it was me. I just stood there, chalk in hand, trying not to look foolish. I prepared myself for a good talking-to (斥責(zé)), but Mr. Prabhuraman told me kindly, “Go back to your seat.”
Today, two decades later, those incidents have made me think. One teacher punished me for something I didn’t do; the other forgave me for something I did wrong. Both experiences had an effect on me. They remind me that no matter what you accomplish (完成), you must always be humble.

A.how to communicate with others

Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his now place and meet his friends.
My earliest memories of my father are a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and family but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him; as a school girl and young adult(成年人)I feared him and felt bitter about him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boy friends if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard.
On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch at an outdoor cafe. We walked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son’s funny facial expressions. Gone was my father’s critical(挑剔的)air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before?
The next day my dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I’m delighted with my new friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.
