Pedestrianism, an early form of racewalking, was a(n) 1 (extreme) popular sport in 18th- and 19th-century Britain, 2 (attract) huge crowds of spectators (觀眾). Individuals would either aim to walk a certain distance within a(n) 3 (limit) period of time or compete against other pedestrians.

Perhaps the most famous 4 (walk) was Captain Robert Barclay Allardice, whose extraordinary (非凡的) achievements earned 5 (he) the title of the “Celebrated Pedestrian”. The Scotsman's most memorable performance 6 (take) place in 1809, when he walked 1,000 miles in 1,000 hours for a bet of 1,000 guineas (an old British unit of money). Many considered 7 unlikely that he would complete the challenge, 8 required him to walk a mile an hour, for forty-two days and nights. He proved them wrong, though the task was so physically demanding that by the end of the walk he had lost nearly fifteen kilos 9 weight.

Since the 20th century, interest in walking as a sport has dropped. Racewalking is still an Olympic sport, but fails 10 (catch) the public attention as it did.

動(dòng)詞短語fail to do sth未能做某事;其中不定式to do sth做動(dòng)詞fail的賓語。

When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation. I suggested that they should stay at “bed and breakfast” houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.
“We didn't stay at bed and breakfast houses,” they said, “because we found that most families were on holiday.” I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought “VACANCIES” meant “holidays”, because the Spanish word for “holidays” is said “vacaciones”. So they did not go to house where the sign outside said “VACANCIES”, which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to houses where the sign said “NO VACANCIES”, because they thought this meant people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels.
We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word “DIVERSION” means “fun”. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word “DIVERSION” on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hole.
English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris when someone offered me some more coffee, I said “Thank you” in French, I meant that I would like some more, however to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that “Thank you” in French means “No, Thank you”.
(1)The author's Spanish friends wanted advice about _______.
A.some funny English stories
B.finding places to stay in England
C.driving their car on English roads
D.going to England by car
(2)The author suggested that they stay at “bed and breakfast” because _______.
A.it would be convenient for them to have dinners and live
B.it would be much cheaper than staying in hotels
C.they would be able to practice their English in the house
D.there would be no problem about finding accommodation there
(3)“NO VACANCIES” in English means _______.
A.no free rooms
B.free rooms
C.not away on holiday
D.they don't live
(4)If you see road sign that says “Diversion” in England, you will _______.
A.take the road and you will be excited
B.have a lot of fun and enjoy yourself
C.find that the road is blocked by crowds of people
D.have to take a different road

Before I studied psychology, I used to think that people would laugh when funny things occurred. While I was right about that, I discovered there are lots of other psychological factors that make people laugh other than the funny part of a joke. When someone laughs at a joke, there will usually be more than one reason that makes him laugh—and the more reasons there are, the more powerful the joke will be.

I was attending a stand-up comedy show in Egypt, and when the man started to make fun of pedestrians crossing streets, everyone laughed their hearts out. The main reason those people strongly laughed was that almost all of them felt angry towards pedestrians who crossed streets carelessly. The joke wasn’t only funny, it also made the audience feel that they were right about being angry at those pedestrians. That is, people were laughing both because of the funny joke and because of the happiness experienced as a result of the psychological support they got.

The better a joke makes a person feel, and the more it includes other psychological factors, the more the person will like it. For example, if you envy one of your friends, and someone tells a joke that is funny and, at the same time, makes your friend seem stupid, then you will probably laugh at it louder than if you weren’t jealous of him.

In short, we don’t laugh only when we hear something funny; we also laugh when we experience some kind of happiness that results from the other psychological factors involved in the joke. I strongly discourage making fun of anyone orbelittlingsomeone to make someone else laugh. All I want to explain is that if your joke supports a person’s emotions, he will certainly like it a lot.

1What did the author find out after studying psychology?

A. Only good jokes make people laugh

B. Many factors lead to people laughing.

C. Funny things can make people laugh

D. Laughter can make people healthy.

2Why did the audience laugh loud at the pedestrians?

A. They played a trick on the pedestrians.

B. The pedestrians behaved in a funny way.

C. They could feel the pedestrians’ happiness.

D. Their emotion was approved of by the show.

3What does the underlined word “belittling” probably mean?

A. Annoy B. Blame

C. Look down on D. Make up to

The human brain contains 10 thousand million cells and each of these may have a thousand connections. Such enormous numbers used to discourage us and cause us to dismiss the possibility of making a machine with human-like ability, but now that we have grown used to moving forward at such a pace we can be less sure. Quite soon, in only 10 or 20 years perhaps, we will be able to assemble a machine as complex as the human brain, and if we can we will. It may then take us a long time to render it intelligent by loading in the right software (軟件)or by altering the architecture but that too will happen.
I think it certain that in decades, not centuries, machines of silicon (硅) will arise first to compete and then do better than their human ancestors. Once they do better than us they will be capable of their own design. In a real sense they will be able to reproduce themselves. Silicon will have ended carbon's long control. And we will no longer be able to claim ourselves to be the finest intelligence in the known universe.
As the intelligence of robots increases to match that of humans and as their cost declines through economies of scale we may use them to improve environments. Thus, deserts may bloom and the ocean beds be mined. Further ahead, by a combination of the great wealth this new age will bring and the technology it will provide, the construction of a vast, man-created world in space, home to thousands or millions of people, will be within our power.
(1)In what way can we make a machine intelligent?
A.By making it work in such environments as deserts, oceans or space.
B.By working hard for 10 or 20 years.
C.By either properly programming it or changing its structure.
D.By reproducing it.
(2)What does the writer think about machines with human-like ability?
A.He believes they will be useful to human beings.
B.He believes that they will control us in the future.
C.He is not quite sure in what way they may influence us.
D.He doesn't consider the construction of such machines possible.
(3)The word “carbon” (Line 4, Para.2) stands for _________.
A.intelligent robots
B.a chemical element
C.an organic substance
D.human beings
(4)It can be inferred from the passage that _______.
A.after connections with phones, robots will be able to have self-reproduction
B.people have come to realize the possibility of making a machine with human-like ability
C.once we make a machine as complex as the human brain, it will have intelligence
D.robots will have control of the vast, man-made world in space
