Fifty people died, over 11,000 were injured, and 100,000 houses were heavily damaged or destroyed in an earthquake that struck North China's Hebei Province.
The quake, measuring 6. 2 on the Richter scale (里氏6 .2級(jí)) , hit the area 220km northwest of Beijing at 11: 50 a. m. on January 10, 1998.
Scientists made a report of the recent quake. They said that the area of northwestern Beijing, the joint of Shanxi and Hebei Provinces and the Inner Mongolia (內(nèi)蒙古) were most easily attacked by earthquakes measuring 6 to a bit over 7 on the Richter scale.
However, scientists did not see the recent earthquake earlier. Clouds covered a large area in the northern part of North China before the earthquake and experts say that this prevented satellites from correctly watching the temperature at the correct altitude (緯度).
Experts say that in the last ten years, about 305 earthquakes have taken place in China with 9 measuring over 7 on the Richter scale, 60 measuring over 6, and 236 measuring over 5.
Tens of thousands of people died or were injured. Loss(損失) valued over 10 billion yuan.

People who are hit by lightning and survive often have long-term effects. These may include memory loss, sleep disorders, muscle pain and depression.
Experts tell people to seek the safety of a building or a hard-top vehicle any time they hear thunder, even if it is not raining. They say lightning can strike as far as sixteen kilometers from any rainfall. Lightning can travel sideways. And at least ten percent of lightning happens without any clouds overhead that you can see.
People who are outdoors should make sure they are not the tallest thing around. Bend low to the ground, but do not lie down. And do not stand near tall object. Get away from water and anything made of metal. A car is safe, but don’t touch any metal inside.
Safety experts say people in buildings should stay away from anything with wires or pipes that lead to the outside. The National Weather Service says if you plan to disconnect any electronic equipment, do so before the storm arrives. Do not use a wired telephone. Do not use water. All these can carry electricity.
Some people think a person struck by lightning carries an electrical charge afterward. Experts say this is not true. It is safe to begin emergency treatment
Each year about four hundred people in the United States are struck by lightning. Last year forty four people died. The average is close to seventy. The National Weather Service says that is more than the number of people killed by severe storms.

A.Lightning can happen even if there is no cloud. |
B.Lightning can’t strike very far. |
C.Lightning can’t travel sideways. |

D.severe storms kill more people than lightning does. |
A.excitement | B.a(chǎn) state of being forgettable |

Do you want to live another 100 years or more? Some experts say that scientific advances will one day enable humans to last tens of years beyond what is now seen as the natural limit of the human life span.
"I think we are knocking at the door of immortality(永生)," said Michael Zey, a Montclair State University business professor and author of two books on the future. "I think by 2075 we will see it and that’s a conservative estimate".
At the conference in San Francisco, Donald Louria, a professor at New Jersey Medical School in Newark said advances in using genes as well as nanotechnology(納米技術(shù))make it likely that humans will live in the future beyond what has been possible in the past. "There is a great push so that people can live from 120 to 180 years," he said. "Some have suggested that there is no limit and that people could live to 200 or 300 or 500 years."
However, many scientists who specialize in ageing are doubtful about it and say the human body is just not designed to last about 120 years. Even with healthier lifestyles and less disease, they say failure of the brain and organs will finally lead all humans to death.
Scientists also differ on what kind of life the super aged might live. "It remains to be seen if you pass 120, you know; could you be healthy enough to have good quality of life?" said Leonard Pooh, director of the University of Georgia Gerontology(老齡學(xué)) Center. "At present people who could get to that point are not in good health at all."

A.people can live from 120 to 180 years
B.it is still doubtful how long humans can live
C.the human body is designed to last about 120 years
D.it is possible for humans to live longer in the future
3.The underlined "it"(paragraph 4)refers to ________.
A.a(chǎn) great push
B.the idea of living beyond the present life span
C.the idea of living from 200 to 300 years
D.the conservative estimate
4.What would be the best title for this text?

B.Science, Technology and Long Living
C.No Limit for Human Life

BEIJING (AFP) — Archeologists in China have uncovered more than 3,000 dinosaur footprints, state media reported,in an area said to be the world’s largest grouping of fossilized hones belonging to the ancient animals.
The footprints, believed to be more than 100 million years old, were discovered after a three-month excavation(發(fā)掘、出土) at a gully in Zhucheng in the eastern province of Shandong, the Xinhua news agency reposed.
The footprints range from 10 to 80 centimeters (4 to 32 inches) in length, and belonged to at least six different kinds of dinosaurs, including tyrannosaurs, the report said Saturday.
Wang Haijun,a senior engineer at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said the footprints faced the same direction.Xinhua said.
This indicated a possible migration or a panic escape by plant-eating dinosaurs after an attack by predators(食肉動(dòng)物),Wang added.
Archeologists have found dinosaur fossils at some 30 sites in Zhucheng, known as“dinosaur city.”The region has seen two major digs since 1964,and experts say the discovery of so many dinosaurs in such a dense area could provide clues on how the animals became extinct millions of years ago.
Plans are being made to set up a fossil park in the area.

A.most of the footprints are more than 32 centimeters long
B.the footprints found belong to some predators
C.the dinosaurs were running in all directions because of an attack
D.the area is considered to be a perfect tour source
37.Which statement below is true according to the passage above?
A.The number of the footprints found is more than 3000.
B.The dinosaurs may live in an age 10,000,000 years ago.
C.The discovery of fossils may open a new age.
D.Archeologists still wish to find some more fossils.
38.The passage may be picked out from_____.
