With the development of the Internet, more and more children are addicted to play online games day and night. It does harm not only to their health, especial their eyes, but also to their studies.

Comparing with online games, many traditional games benefits kids mentally and physically. They were very popular to several generations, for they learned something valuable and had a fun playing the games. Therefore, the games are losing our appeal now, and some children even haven’t heard of them.

Personally, I think teachers and parents should take measure to limit their children's Internet time. Let children know harm of online games and the benefits of traditional games. What's more, we should often organize traditional activities for children.

Good manners are important, but you can easily make a social blunder when you visit a foreign country, because sometimes good manners in one place are bad manners in other places.

Suppose you visit some friends in Mongolia and they ask you to eat with them. What kind of manners do they want you to have? They want you to give a loud “burp” after you finish eating. Burping shows that you like your food. But in some other countries, if you give a loud “burp”, you are supposed to say, “Excuse me, please.”

In many places people like to eat together. But in some parts of Polynesia it is bad manners to be seen eating together. People show their good manners by turning their backs on others while they eat.

What are manners like in an East African town? The people try not to see you. When you are visiting a friend, he may not see you at all. If you are polite, you will sit down beside him. You will wait until he finishes what he is doing. Then he will talk to you.

If you visit a friend in Arabia you should walk behind other tents until you come to his tent. If you pass in front of other tents, you will be asked into each one. The people will ask you to eat with them. And it is bad manners if you say no.

Manners are different all over the world. But it is good to know that all manners help people show that they want to be friends.

I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it when Mother sat doing letters. Looking at the ink bottle, pens and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.

Years later, during her final illness, Mother kept different things for my sister and brother, “But the desk,” she said again, “is for Elizabeth.”

I never saw her get angry, and never saw her cry. I knew she loved me, and she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter. They never happened and a gulf opened between us. I was “ too emotional (易動(dòng)感情的) ”, but she lived “on the surface”.

As years went by, I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know that she did forgive (原諒) me.

I posted the letter and waited for her answer, but it didn’t come. I wondered if the letter had even got to her. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.

Now the present of her desk told me that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work, though she had never been able to. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside … a photo of my father and a one-paper letter, folded (折疊) and refolded many times.

Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

1.The writer began to love her mother’s desk .

A. when she was a child

B. when mother gave it to her

C. after mother died

D. before she became a writer

2.The passage shows that .

A. the mother wrote to her daughter in careful words

B. the mother cared much about her daughter in words

C. the mother was cold on the surface but kind inside to her daughter

D. the mother was strict with her daughter

3. What did mother do with her daughter’s letter asking for forgiveness?

A. She often talked about the letter.

B. She had never received the letter.

C. She read the letter again and again until she died.

D. She didn’t forgive her daughter at all in her life.

4. What’s the best title for the passage?

A. My Letter to Mother

B. Talks Between Mother and Me

C. My Mother’s Desk

D. Mother and Children
