“A room without books is like a body without a soul,” observed the Roman philosopher, Cicero. It can also be a sign of financial problems to come. New research has uncovered a strong connection between the earning of adults and whether they grew up surrounded by books as children.

Three economists at the University of Padua—Giorgio Brunello, Guglielmo Weber and Christoph Weiss—studied 6000 men born in nine European countries and concluded that children with access to books could expect to earn more money than those who grew up with few or no books.

They studied the period from 1920 to 1956, when school reforms saw the minimum school leaving age raised across Europe. They booked at whether, at the age of 10, a child lived in a house with fewer than 10 books, a shelf of books, a bookcase with up to 100 books, two bookcases, or more than two bookcases.

Over the period studied, the research, published in The Economic Journal, found that an additional year of education increased a man’s average lifetime earnings by 9%. Men brought up in houses with less than a shelf of books earned only 5% more as a result of the extra year’s education, compared with 21% more for those who had access to a lot of books. And those who had access to books were more likely to move to the better-earning opportunities in cities than those without books. The men’s first job was also much more likely to be a white-collar job.

The economists offer a number of theories for the results. “Perhaps books matter because they encourage children to read more and reading can have positive effects on school performance,” they said.

The number of books in children’s homes can effectively predict their cognitive(認(rèn)知的) test scores. This may indicate a home that encourages cognitive skills, which are important for economic success in life.

Local broadcasting station KBS reported that the AN/TPY-2 radar(雷達(dá))was supposed to be delivered to South Korea on March 16, but it was not confirmed as the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) refused to tell the arrival of other THAAD equipment.

The hurry deployment "is illegal and against the law," said a person who refused to tell his name. She said their advice would be presented next week to the leaders of major political parties. The campaign started online a week ago, and it had already collected around 5,000 signatures. They are targeting 10,000 signatures to be gathered. The organizing groups would call on the government to stop all deployment procedures. The Seoul-Washington agreement to put one THAAD battery was announced in July last year without any parliamentary(國(guó)會(huì)的)approval and public consensus.

"Lawmakers must stop telling. They must act," said the activist. They claimed the THAAD plan lacked the people's agreement and is against people's rights to peaceful, healthy life and environmental protection, which are guaranteed by the law. The Gwanghwamun square was packed with people holding cards that read "Opposition to THAAD." Residents made their way to the capital city and chanted the famous slogan "THAAD Out, Peace In." Some put a flag with anti-THAAD slogan over their shoulders, while children held a blue, rubber balloon that was stamped with anti-THAAD slogan.

In addition to opposition at home, China and Russia have strongly opposed THAAD in South Korea as it can spy on their countries, thus damaging security of the two countries.

Under the Seoul-Washington agreement, THAAD in South Korea will be operated by the USFK. Seoul has claimed the X-band radar is only aimed at the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) threats, but South Korea's military has no right to be engaged in the operation.
