The new studies show that fewer than half of the 9th graders in many of the nation’s largest cities, can ever graduate. The studies clearly show that the dropout rate isn’t dropping. And, in particular, the dropout rate isn’t dropping for poor and minority students.
Amazingly, though so many regret the rising dropout rate, our schools continue to lack formal plans--or any plans--to teach students motivation(動(dòng)機(jī)). Most schools have no game plan to ensure that students understand that schooling will be completely necessary. Schools expect youth and children to act as though schooling is important, but they never teach them to believe that.
Years ago, families ensured that the children recognized the value of schooling. But in many modern families, the children may fail to recognize the importance of school life just because these families may actually tell their children that school is not important. Since many families are not motivating their children to be interested students, youth professionals, like teachers may need to provide this training. Otherwise, it is likely the dropout rate will continue not to drop, but only worsen.
Here are some strategies to convince even the most apathetic (無動(dòng)于衷的) students that they must stay in school.
Ask students if they will ever need to work: The world has changed. 100 years ago, factory work was the booming job, and it required no education. Today, factories are increasingly automated. Most computer-related jobs require education and at least a high school diploma.
Ask students which century they will be prepared for: In 1900, the most common jobs were farm laborer and domestic servant—education not needed. Now, the most common jobs are office and sales staff—education and diploma usually needed. An amazing 6 out of 10 people today work in a store or office.
Ask students to devise a way that the employee could be replaced. For example, the coming trend in fast food is to use computers rather than people to run the restaurant. A prototype is apparently already being tested. The students should discover that most jobs that lack education and diploma requirements may be ripe for automation.

It is pretty much a one-way street. While it may be common for university researchers to try their luck in the commercial world, there is very little traffic in the opposite direction. Pay has always been the biggest deterrent, as people with families often feel they cannot afford the drop in salary when moving to a university job. For some industrial scientists, however, the attractions of academia (學(xué)術(shù)界) outweigh any financial considerations.
Helen Lee took a 70% cut in salary when she moved from a senior post in Abbott Laboratories to a medical department at the University of Cambridge. Her main reason for returning to academia mid-career was to take advantage of the greater freedom to choose research questions. Some areas of inquiry have few prospects(前景) of a commercial return, and Lee’s is one of them.
The impact of a salary cut is probably less serious for a scientist in the early stages of a career. Guy Grant, now a research associate at the Unilever Centre for Molecular Informatics at the University of Cambridge, spent two years working for a pharmaceutical (制藥的) company before returning to university as a post-doctoral researcher. He took a 30% salary cut but felt it worthwhile for the greater intellectual(智力的) opportunities.
Higher up the ladder, where a pay cut is usually more significant, the demand for scientists with a wealth of experience in industry is forcing universities to make the transition (轉(zhuǎn)換) to academia more attractive, according to Lee. Industrial scientists tend to receive training that academics do not, such as how to build a multidisciplinary(包括各種學(xué)科的) team, manage budgets and negotiate(談判) contracts. They are also well placed to bring something extra to the teaching side of an academic role that will help students get a job when they graduate, says Lee, perhaps experience in manufacturing practice or product development. “Only a small number of undergraduates will continue in an academic career. So someone leaving university who already has the skills needed to work in an industrial lab has far more potential in the job market than someone who has spent all their time on a narrow research project.”
【小題1】By “a one-way street” in the first paragraph, the author means ________.
A.university researchers know little about the commercial world |
B.there is little exchange between industry and academia |
C.few industrial scientists would quit to work in a university |
D.few university professors are willing to do industrial research |
A.keeps someone from taking action |
B.helps to move the traffic |
C.a(chǎn)ttracts people’s attention |
D.brings someone a financial burden |
A.Flexible work hours. |
B.Her research interests. |
C.Her preference for the lifestyle on campus. |
D.Prospects of academic accomplishments. |
A.do financially more rewarding work |
B.raise his status in the academic world |
C.enrich his experience in medical research |
D.have better intellectual opportunities |
A.Increase its graduates’ competitiveness in the job market |
B.Develop its students’ potential in research. |
C.Help it to obtain financial support from industry. |
D.Adapt its research to practical applications. |

Is it wrong to use someone else’s wireless (Wi-Fi) connection? Just recently, a man was arrested for doing just that. At that time, he was sitting in the street with a laptop(便攜式電腦) and using an unsecured(無安全保護(hù)措施) wireless connection to surf the Net. What do you think about this topic? Listen to the following different views on it.
For a start, if someone is using your Internet service or downloading, this will affect your speed of access or download limit. Also, it’s bad for Internet service providers. They will suffer in the long run because fewer people will pay for an Internet service if they know they can get it for free. And finally, just imagine this: what if the person who is stealing your Internet connection is involved in an illegal activity? I think the police are totally right to arrest these criminals.
— by Sandra Wilkins
Basically, if the person who paid for the service still has everything they paid for, what’s the problem? It’s just like using the light from streetlamps to read your book, or watching someone else’s firework display. It’s not stealing.
Also, if you leave your wireless connection unsecured, then it is your own fault(過錯(cuò)) if someone else uses it. Just as you wouldn’t leave your front door unlocked, or your car door open, neither should you leave your wireless connection open. By leaving your wireless connection open, you are inviting people to use it. Securing your wireless connection is as easy as clicking a few settings on your router(路由器). And finally, haven’t the police got more important crimes to solve? They’re always saying how they haven’t got the manpower to solve real issues. But this is just ridiculous(荒謬的).
— by James Hoarley

A.He thinks it is unacceptable. |

A.Wireless connection | B.Wireless worries |

One day in 1965,when I worked at View Ridge School in Seattle,a fourth?grade teacher approached me.She had a student who finished his work before all the others and needed a challenge.“Could he help in the library?” she asked.I said, “Send him along.”
Soon a slight, sandy?haired boy in jeans and a T?shirt appeared.“Do you have a job for me?” he asked.
I told him about the Dewey Decimal System(杜威十進(jìn)分類法) for shelving books. He picked up the idea immediately. Then I showed him a stack(摞) of cards for long?overdue books that I was beginning to think had actually been returned but were misshelved with the wrong cards in them.He said,“Is it kind of a detective job?” I answered yes,and he became working.
He had found three books with wrong cards by the time his teacher opened the door and announced,“Time for break!”He argued for finishing the finding job;she made the case for fresh air.She won.
The next morning,he arrived early.“I want to finish these books,”he said.At the end of the day, when he asked to be a librarian on a regular basis,it was easy to say yes.He worked untiringly.
After a few weeks I found a note on my desk, inviting me to dinner at the boy’s home.At the end of a pleasant evening, his mother announced that the family would be moving to a neighbouring school district. Her son’s first concern, she said, was leaving the View Ridge library.“Who will find the lost books?” he asked.
When the time came,I said an unwilling good?bye.I missed him,but not for long.A few days later he came back and joyfully announced,“The librarian over there doesn’t let boys work in the library. My mother got me transferred back to View Ridge. My dad will drop me off on his way to work. And if he can’t,I’ll walk!”
I should have had an idea such focused determination would take that young man wherever he wanted to go.What I could not have guessed, however, was that he would become a genius of the Information Age:Bill Gates, tycoon(企業(yè)巨頭) of Microsoft and America’s richest man.
