One Christmas Eve a few years ago, an English couple received a very special telephone call. It was only a twenty-second call but it was very important. It was their fifteen-year-old daughter, who had disappeared six months before, that rang them. "I'm phoning to wish you Merry Christmas," she said, "I love you."

Ronal and Edwina Hayden were so happy that they started a special telephone service called "Alive and Well". The service helps parents to keep in contact with children who have run away from home.

Young people can phone "Alive and Well" and leave a message for their parents. The telephones are answered by answering machines. So no one can speak to the child or make him return home. Parents of runaway children who are under eighteen can ask the police to bring their children home. So children do not want to tell their parents where they are. Through "Alive and Well" they can telephone their parents without worrying about this or giving their address.

The Haydens and their helpers write down the tape-recorded telephone messages and contact the address given. Many of the 30, 000 British teenagers who have left home are probably in London. For only two pence they can go into a telephone coin box and call their parents. They can dial 5675339 and stop a parent's worry: Is he dead or alive?

Every year, as Spring Festival draws near, most Chinese people will get excited to make preparation for the most important festival and make plan for the winter break. It is a little like Christmas in the United States, but there are some differences between the two festivals.
Both the major Chinese and the major Western holidays come during the cold season, and special food is expected. In western countries, cookies and cakes begin just after Thanksgiving in November and show up everywhere. Turkey, potatoes and other food come later. Similar thing happens in China. Entering lunar December, most families will make shopping plans for the coming big day and food is certainly one of the most important things to be considered. At the end of the month, both parents in each family will be very busy---the father is busy buying food while the mother is busy cooking.
A deeper similarity (相似處) is tradition. Christmas, as the letters “Christ” suggests, began as a holiday to celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ. Many people pray (祈禱) on this day. In China, people living in cities or towns, though they don’t plan to sow seeds(播種) this month, still celebrate on the big day for farmers.
Followers of both holidays are also different from each other. While Chinese people travel to the homes of elder relatives, Americans usually call or send cards. Westerners prefer Christmas carols to fireworks. In Christmas, many family gifts come together instead of one by one, since adults may have only one day free to celebrate.
But the most curious difference is about students. Chinese students going home for Spring Festival sometimes report that they get bored by the end of vacation, yet American students seldom get bored around Christmas and western New Year.
Not everyone enjoys classic holiday traditions. Students in western countries may get upset, as too much homework, travel or bad family relations may destroy the short holiday season. In China, more and more college students choose to travel or work during the winter holiday instead of going home to stay with their families. It’s against the tradition but many people accept it.

Teresa was born in Yugoslavia on August 27,1910. Her parents were Albanians(阿爾巴尼亞人) and member of the Roman Catholic Church. When she was seven years old, her father was murdered. She decided not to be filled with hate because of this tragedy(悲劇). Instead, she would seek a life of love. This ambition led her to Ireland where she became a nun(修女) at the age of eighteen.
After only one year of training, she was sent to India to teach in a school called Loretto House, where the students were mostly from rich Indian families. After 15 years there, she left her duties as a teacher to “follow Christ into the slums(貧民窟).” Her heart led her away from the rich to the needs of the poor. She was then 36 years old.
Teresa no longer was affiliated(隸屬) with the Irish nuns who sent her to Loreto House but worked independently. However, her work was recognised by the Pope in Rome for she still was a nun. He allowed her to set up her own group, which was called the Missionaries of Charity(仁愛傳教修女會(huì)).
She no longer dressed as a nun in the European or Irish tradition. Instead, she put on a sari, the local dress of the Indian people. At first, people were sceptical(懷疑的) about her motives. Soon, they realised she was really interested in loving poor people, even those who were dying and had no chance of survival.
Soon, other Indian people began to spare time to help Mother Teresa. She had taught everyone that the poor and dying people need love most of all.
In 1979, she won the Nobel Peace Prize.

第三部分  閱讀理解(共20小題,每小題2分,滿分40分)

For many people Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. One of the reasons people love it so much is that you get presents. But like presents, Christmas needs to be unwrapped so that you can understand the true meaning behind the day.

Many Chinese believe everyone in Western countries celebrate this holiday. That is not true. Christmas is an important religious holiday for Christians. December 25 represents the birthday of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the son of God.

Christianity (基督教) is a very popular religion in America and Europe. However, there are many other religions, too. People who celebrate those religions don’t celebrate Christmas. But during the winter season they usually have their own important holiday. That is why when talking to a foreigner it is safer to say, “ Happy holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas” because you never know his/her religious background.

The image of a fat, happy man in red---Santa Claus---has come to represent the idea of goodness and love instead of religious part or the “Christmas spirit”. Santa Claus is based on a man named Saint Nicholas who was a 4th century Greek Christian.

Saint Nicholas bought presents for children and gave them away anonymously(匿名地). This is where the idea of gift on Christmas began. But the Santa Claus didn’t exist until the 19th century when an American named Thomas Nast drew cartoons of him. So really, Santa has nothing to do with the religious holiday.

In fact, some people who celebrate Christmas don’t really care about Santa Claus.

Christmas is a special day for Christians but the ideas of being good and loving your neighbors are not limited to Christianity. So buy a gift for your friend, tell your mother you love her and have merry Christmas. I mean ,”Happy holidays!”

57. In the passage, the author thinks __________.

A. Santa Claus was a real person in the past

B. everyone should believe in Christianity

C. all people in Western countries celebrate Christmas

58. What is “the true meaning” in the first passage?

A. For many people Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year

B. The Westerners have different religious backgrounds

C. Some like to say “Merry Christmas”, and others like to say “Happy holidays”

D. Being good and loving our neighbors are the virtues of all humans

59. What is the CORRECT explanation of Santa Claus?

A. He was a Greek Christian in the 4th century

B. He was an American who was born in the 19th century

C. His image represents the “Christmas spirit”

D. He was a cartoon figure drawn by Thomas Nast
