This morning I got up early and went to school as usually, only to find there were nobody in the classroom because it is Sunday. “How a bad memory I have!” I couldn’t help laughing. 【題目】In the old days, children were familiar with birth and death as part of life. Now this is perhaps the first generation of American youngsters who have never been close by during of the birth a baby and have never experienced the death of a family member.

Nowadays when people grow old, we often send them to nursing homes. When they get sick, we send them to a hospital, where children are forbidden to visit terminally （晚期的）in patients— even when those patients are their parents. This deprives（剝奪）the dying patient of family members during the last few days of his life and it deprives the children of an experience of death, which is an important learning experience.

It is important for family members, and doctors and nurses to understand these patients’ communication in order to truly understand their needs, fears and fantasies （幻想）. Most of our patients welcomed another human being with whom they could talk openly, honestly, and frankly about their trouble. Many of them shared with us their great need to be informed, to be kept up - to - date on their medical condition and to be told when the end was near. We found out that patients who had been dealt with openly and frankly were better able to cope with the coming of detach and finally to reach a true stage of acceptance before death.

Believe it or not, many of the biggest change in how English is spoken have come from common people in the streets. And one of the most important places which English has changed is the playground! These playgrounds can be any place where the young people meet, such like a sports field or a beach. Often words using by black kids in big cities become popular for other kids many years later. On the beaches of southern California, teenagers invented words to describe what they felt when they surfed. These words found its way into the high schools and then to other places. Similar changes happen among young people in Ireland and Australia. Children from one group would find ways to play with another group more easily. Often they made new words just develop an identity different from their parents.

Sunday as a day of rest is, or was, so deeply rooted in the culture that it’s surprising to find that, in a short span of time, it has almost entirely lost this association．In my childhood, it was assumed that everyone would either be home or visiting someone else’s home on Sunday．But now the question is, “What do you plan to DO this Sunday?” The answer can range from going to the mall, to participating in a road race, to Montreal for lunch．If one were to respond, “I’m making a Sunday visit to family,” such an answer would feel strange, which sounds like an echo from another era．

I suppose I should be grateful to live in Maine, a state of small towns, abundant land and tight relationships．Even though folks work as hard here as they do anywhere else, the state’s powerfully rural feature still keeps at least remnants（殘余部分）of the moral of yesterday’s America, where people had to depend on one another in the face of economic vagaries（反復(fù)無常的情況）and a challenging environment．

Recently our class have had a heat discussion on whether the score of English should be reduced by 100. Opinions concerned this hot topic vary from person to person.

Some students in favor of it. They thought reducing the score may be a good chance for our students, we are supposed to attach much important to Chinese. It is no need for every student to learn English so hard.

However, others disagree with it. They think it’s English that play an important role in international communication. In their opinion, reduce the English score isn’t a wise choice.

Personally, I agree with the latter.
