For many of us, printed books are satisfying in ways beyond the words they contain. Billions of printed books have been published, read and saved in the 600 years since movable type was invented, so why mess with a good things?
Sony Electronics is doing just that, betting that readers will be won over by the convenience of readability of its new electronic book devices. Sony's reader, the PRS-505, can hold 160 books in its fixed memory, enough to line the shelves on a good-sized wall in the average American home. The $299 device is about the size of a paperback book, but a half-inch thick and weighs less than a pound.
The Sony book reader is revolutionary not only in its storage capacity. The font(字體) is highly readable and adjustable by size. Unlike laptop computers, you can put the Sony in your purse, read it in direct sunlight and even bookmark the pages. And you can connect it to your PC to download books.
Surprisingly, though the reader has liberated the book from paper, electronic books aren't always a bargain. For example, David Baldacci's "Stone Cold" download retails(零售) for $15.19 at the Sony site, while Amazon(卓越網(wǎng)) will deliver a hard copy to your mailbox for $16.19.
The Sony reader also lets you store and play or display music. So what's not to like about the Sony? Well, for many bibliophiles, a lot. Book lovers like to have, hold and keep their volumes, which don't need charging. You can write notes in the margins, and enjoy the ambience they provide on your book shelves.
The need for electronic reading devices is likely to grow as more people worried about the billions of tons of paper used for printed material. Many believe the time will come when devices like the Sony reader are as common as printed newspapers and magazines today.

For most students, the most difficult part of any exam is the actual studying.Typically, there is so much
material to study that students begin to delay, putting off studying until the night before. After a latenight cram session, students arrive at the exam tired and feeling dazed by large amounts of information they've tried to
absorb. The easiest way to study, for an exam, and avoid the cram sessions, is to make a study plan.
The first step to making a study plan is to decide whether you want to study alone or in a group. When
planning study times and organizing study sessions for a group, the needs and schedules of the group are a
factor. As a result, you must decide whether you will be studying with a group before continuing with making a study plan.
There are two time elements that are important to an effective study plan. The first time element to consider is the amount of time you have until the exam, while the second is the amount of time during the day that
you can set aside for studying.Try to study for at least two hours per day for major exams, like entrance
exams, and at least thirty minutes per day for lecture exams. If you are limited on the amount of time until the exam, such as one week or less, then you will need to increase your daily study time.Set up a schedule with clearly marked study times for each day.
The content to be studied depends on the type of exam. For placement exams, entrance exams, and
licensure exams, there are no specific textbooks or prior lecture notes. There are, however, commercially
available review guides, and textbooks and lecture notes from past classes often contain a great deal of
material that will help with the exam.By looking at the content areas  of the test, you can determine what
readily available material to study. For coursebased exams, textbooks and lecture notes are both ideal study content.Break the content into chunks(塊), and then assign specific chunks to the study times that you have
listed on your schedule.
Once you have set up study times and assigned material to them, it is time to study. When reading
textbooks, take notes on the information. With lecture notes, write notes in the margin.Use a highlighter. The
idea is to make key information readily available for review. In addition, making notes and looking up ideas
to supplement notes reinforces the material in your mind.Quiz yourself as you finish each area you are
studying to determine what you still need to review.
Study plans are as unique as the person making them. The most effective study plan will take into
account your schedule, the times each day when you are able to study without interruption, and the amount of material that needs to be reviewed.By spreading out the study times and breaking up the information,
you make it easier to absorb and retain the necessary material before the exam.
1    The easiest way to study for an exam and avoid the cram sessions

閱讀理解.
For an American, or a foreigner here, any chance to have a social life is welcome. But
what happened last night made me think I may be better off having no life while I'm in
Baghdad.
Friday evening,l was on my way with an American journalist friend to his welcome party.
When we got to a checkpoint,we were told to get out of the car to be searched, which is
normal procedure. We waited under a tent,as our car was examined on the other side
of a wall. We couldn't see what was happening but we figured we would hit the road soon.
But the search was taking longer than expected, probably because of a car bomb
threat that had been reported earlier. Then we noticed the officers put their helmets(頭盔)
on. Never a good sign.
Our Iraqi driver then noticed that our other Iraqi driver and guards who were in a
second car were standing facing a wall. We had gotten separated from them at the
checkpoint. We told two American officers that they were with us. They whispered
with each other and then walked away.
A few minutes later, an officer walked toward us and asked us to follow him. He
said to me, "If you make any moves,l will take you down hard. "
That's when l knew we were actually thought to be doing something terrible. We
were told to sit in a row on the sidewalk, facing the street. I noticed across the street
were our other driver and guards. They were also in a row, but in a kneeling position
with their hands on their heads.
I was shocked. The only explanation could be that our guards had been at the
shooting range in the morning, so the police dog may have picked something up from
that. I also wondered why our Iraqi fellows on the other side of the street were being
treated worse than us when it was our car that was under suspicion(懷疑) .
After the end of the hour long suffering, we were allowed to leave. No longer in
the mood for the party,we all went home.
1. The author and his people were going to the party____.
A. in two cars
B. in one car
C. under the protection of police officers
D. for the purpose of exploding a car
2. The author became aware the situation was worse than expected when__________.
A. they arrived at the checkpoint
B. the officers put their helmets on
C. an officer shouted at him
D. some people were asked to kneel down
3. Paragraphs 6 and 7 are mainly written to_________.
A. analyze the reason for the accident
B. describe the author's terrible feelings
C. state the importance to obey police
D. show how differently the officers treated them
4. The author indicated that in Iraq ,__________.
A. he would think twice before going to social activities
B. it was particularly dangerous for foreigners
C. foreigners were treating local people very cruelly
D. American officers could do whatever they wanted
