Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa has always been something of a mystery woman. There have been questions over the reason for her mysterious smile and her whereabouts(行蹤) during the Second World War. Now the story of a secret agent(間諜) working for Britain may have the answer to the second puzzle.
Albrecht Gaiswinkler, an Australian, rescued the painting from the Nazis, according to the official history of the Special Operations Executive.
The Louvre in Paris, where Mona Lisa is exhibited, has always denied that it was taken by the occupying Nazi forces, although last year the museum said for the first time that a 16th or 17th-century copy of the painting was taken by the Germans and hidden in a saltmine in Austria.
The SOE history , which has been kept secret for 50 years, details the hero of Gaiawinkler, who is singled out(突出)for rescuing a number of Nazi treasure boards(聚藏物), including “ Mona Lisa”.
The Secret History of SOE 1940-1945, written by the late Wiliam Mackenzie and published by St.Ermin’s Press, is based on secret files from the war and interviews with members of the secret organization. It states clearly that Mona Lisa was recovered from the Nazis.
The Nazis pillaged(搶奪) European art treasures on a huge scale on the orders of Adolf Hitler and many were stored in a saltmine near the town of Bad Ausee in Austria.
According to the SOE history, Gaiswinkler deserted from the German Armed Forces and joined the Marquis(抗德游擊隊(duì)) in France in June 1944. Gaiswinkler was “ dropped blind” back into his country, where he raised an active force of 350 men. In the last weeks of the Nazi rule, he was able to harass(騷擾) the Nazis “ by a multitude of bluffs(虛張聲勢(shì))”, When the Americans arrived, they found that he had captured several important Nazis and “had rescued a number of treasure boards, including Mona Lisa and the Austrian Imperial Crown Jewels.”
45. What does the second puzzle in the first paragraph refer to ?
A. Where Mona Lisa was during the Second World War.
B. The story of a secret agent.
C. Mona Lisa’s mysterious smile .
D. The SOE history.
46. From the article, we can know that Gaiswinkler’s home country is ____________.
A. France B. Germany C. Austria D. Britain

She is widely seen as proof that good looks can last for ever. But, at nearly 500 years of age, time is catching up with the Mona Lisa.
The health of the famous picture, painted by Leonardo da Vinci in 1505, is getting worse by the year, according to the Louver Museum(盧浮宮) where it is housed.
“The thin, wooden panel on which the Mona Lisa is painted in oil has changed shape since experts checked it two years ago,” the museum said. Visitors have noticed changes but repairing the world’s most famous painting is not easy. Experts are not sure about the materials the Italian artist used and their current chemical state.
Nearly 6 million people go to see the Mona Lisa every year, many attracted by the mystery of her smile. “It is very interesting that when you’re not looking at her, she seems to be smiling, and then you look at her and she stops,” said Professor Margaret Livingstone of Harvard University. “It’s because direct vision(視覺) is excellent at picking up details, but less suited to looking at shadows. Da Vinci painted the smile in shadows.”
However, the actual history of the Mona Lisa is just as mysterious as the smile. Da Vinci himself loved it so much that he always carried it with him, until it was eventually sold to France’s King Francis I in 1519.
In 1911, the painting was stolen from the Louver by a former employee, who took it out of the museum, hidden under his coat. He said he planned to return it to Italy. The painting was sent back to France two years later. During World War Ⅱ, French hid the painting in small towns to keep it out of the hands of German forces.
We can infer from the text that_______
A. the Mona Lisa is proved to be able to last another 500 years
B. Mona Lisa’s beauty is fading gradually with 500 years passing by
C. the Mona Lisa has been catching people’s wide attention in the past 500 years
D. Mona Lisa does not look out of date though painted 500 years ago

A. It was once taken away and hidden up by German forces.
B. Its painter himself loved it greatly and always kept it in a shade.
C. Mona Lisa stops smiling when you look at her wanting to see her smiles.
D. King Francis I bought it and then returned it to Italy.
Choose the right order about the happenings onto Mona Lisa.
a. It was stolen from the Louver.
b. Its painter sold it to King Francis I
c. Its state of health was checked.

e. It was hidden and protected against Germans.
A. b-a-d-e-c B. d-e-c-b-a C. d-a-e-c-b D. b-c-a-d-e

B. it is likely to be stolen again when it’s under repair
C. it is uncertain which country, Italy of France, should take charge

The Winter Palace was built between 1754 and 1762 for Empress Elizabeth, the daughter of Peter the Great. Unfortunately, Elizabeth died before the palace was completed and only Catherine the Great and her successors were able to enjoy the great interior (內(nèi)部) of Elizabeth’s home. Many parts of the palace’s impressive interior have been remodeled since then, particularly after 1837, when a huge fire destroyed most of the building. Today the Winter Palace, together with four more buildings arranged side by side along the river embankment, houses the extensive collections of the Hermitage. The Hermitage Museum is the largest art gallery in Russia and is among the largest and most respected art museums in the world.
The museum was founded in 1764 when Catherine the Great bought a collection of 255 paintings from the German city of Berlin. Today, the Hermitage boasts over 2.7 million exhibits and displays, a diverse range of art and artifacts (手工藝品) from all over the world and throughout history (from Ancient Egypt to the early 20th century Europe). The Hermitage’s collections include works by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian, a collection of Rembrandts and Rubens, many French Impressionist works by Renoir, Cezanne, Monet and Pissarro, and several works by Rodin. The collection is really worth a stop for all those interested in art and history. The experts say that if you were to spend a minute looking at each exhibit on show in the Hermitage, you would need 11 years before you’d seen them all. However, we suggest you choose a guided tour instead!
