A. Schedule your time.
B. Use lists to set priorities.(優(yōu)先權(quán))
C. Learn how to read.
D. Take good notes and use them.
E. Get everything organized.
F. Take every chance to study.

The kids at the top of the class get there by mastering a few basic techniques that others can readily
learn. Here, according to education experts and students themselves, are the secrets of straight-A
students.
1.
Among the students we interviewed, study times were strictly a matter of personal preference. Some
worked late at night when the house was quiet. Some learned new words while brushing his teeth. Others
awoke early. Still others studied as soon as they came home from school when the work was fresh in
their minds. All agreed, however, on the need for consistency.
2.
In high school, Jim McCray ran track, played soccer and was in the band and orchestra. "I was so
busy, I couldn't waste time looking for a pencil or missing paper. I kept everything right where I could
put my hands on it," he says. He maintains two folders-one for the day's assignments, the other for papers completed and graded.
3.
"The best class I ever took," says Christopher Campbell, who graduated from high school last spring, "
was speed-reading. I not only increased my words per minute but also learned to look at a book's table
of contents, graphs and pictures first. Then, when I began to read, I had a sense of the material and
solved the secret of good reading that an active reader is the one who continually asks questions that
lead to a full understanding of the author's message."
4.
When a teacher assigns a long paper, Domenica draws up a timetable, dividing the project into small
pieces so it isn't so overwhelming. "It's like eating a steak," she says. "You chew it one bite at a time."
Of course, even the best students delay action sometimes. But when that happens, they face up to it.
Sometimes it comes down to late nights. But, if they want A's, they make sure to hit the deadline.
5.
"Reading the textbook is important," says Anderson, "but the teacher is going to test you on what he
or she emphasized. I usually write down key points from the text on one side and those from the teacher's
lecture on the other. Then I am able to review both aspects of the assignment at once." Just before the
bell rings, most students get ready to rush out. Anderson uses those few minutes to write a two-or
three-sentence summary of the lesson's principal points, which he scans before the next day's class.
The most important "secret" of the super-achievers is not so secret. You can learn and master them
and become an A student, too.

A. Gift giving proven to be valuable
B. Memories from gift giving
C. Moments and events for gift giving
D. Various functions of gift giving
E. Gift giving as a wasteful practice
F. Gift giving as a two-way social activity
                                                                         Gift Giving
1.______
There are many occasions (場(chǎng)合) for giving gifts in modern industrialized societies: birthdays, naming
ceremonies, weddings, anniversaries, New Year. It is common to give gifts on many of these celebrations
in western cultures. In addition, special events, such as one's first day of school or graduation from university,
often require gift giving.
2.______
What is happening when we give gifts? Most important, we are exchanging gifts. If someone gives me
a gift for my birthday, I know that I am usually expected to give one on his or her next birthday. A gift builds
up or confirms a social obligation (義務(wù)).
3.______
Gifts tighten personal relationships and provide a means of communication between loved ones. People say
that a gift lets the recipient (接受者) know we are thinking of them, and that we want to make the person "feel
special." We want people to feel wanted, to feel part of our social or family group. We give presents to say
"I'm sorry." Sometimes it is difficult for us to find a present that someone will like. Sometimes we give things
that we like or would feel comfortable with. In all these cases, the gifts are sending out messages-often very
expressive ones.
4.______
People tend to talk about presents in a fairly loving way. A woman whose mother had died years ago
described the many gifts around her house. These were gifts that her mother had given her over the years:"I
appreciate these, and they mean something to me," the woman said, "because I remember the occasions they
were given on, and that they were from my mother, and the relationship we've had." The gifts remain and keep
the relationship alive in mind. This woman felt the same way about the gifts she gave to others. She hoped that
the recipients would look at her gifts in years to come and remember her.
5.______
Emotions (情感) like these suggest that a positive spirit still lies behind gift giving. They prove that the
anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss was wrong to say that modern western gift giving is highly wasteful.
Studies in Canada and elsewhere have also shown that this is not the case. Each gift is unique even if so many
are given. The emotional benefit for those who exchange gifts is the very reason for the tradition to continue.

What is your favourite colour? Do you like yellow, orange, red?   1   . Do you prefer greys and blues?
Then you are probably quiet, shy, and you would rather follow than lead. You tend to be pessimist. At least,
this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the
meaning of colour preference, as well as the effect that colours have on human beings.    2   . If you happen
to love brown, you did so, as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.
       3   . A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one;
and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day.    4   . A black bridge over the Thames
River, near London, used to be the scene of more suicides (自殺) than any other bridge in the area-until it was
repainted green. The number of suicide attempts immediately fell sharply. Perhaps it would have fallen even
more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.
5  . It is an established fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when
their machines are painted orange rather than black or grey.
A. On the other hand, black is depressing.
B. They tell us, among other facts, that we do not choose our favourite colour as grow
up-we are born with our preference.
C. The rooms are painted in different colours as you like.
D. If you do, you must be an optimist, a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement.
E. Light and bright colours make people not only happier but more active.
F. Life is like a picture or a poem, full of different colours.
G. Colours do influence our moods-there is no doubt about it

●Hi, Carolyn: It's been a bad time for my husband and me. I haven't been able to get pregnant since
a miscarriage about a year ago, and many people around me have had babies or are getting pregnant.
1    I have been looking for another job for months and have been on more interviews than I ever
thought I would get. But I still don't have a new position.
2   I know everyone has ups and downs, but I feel like I've been down so long, with nothing
changing. How do you continue feeling hopeful when so many things go wrong? I've seen a doctor. She
did help, but it still hurts when another friend is pregnant or wait another week with no job offer.
-Feeling Down
●Dear, Feeling down: It will hurt, yes. And if you've lost hope, then analyzing the depression is a must.
It's so personal that it's hard to make suggestions, but what are you reliably good at, what gives you great pleasure, and what puts smiles on your face?    3   For many it's just getting to the other side, knowing
you have a favorite book or the person you love waiting for you at the end of the day.
Personally, being a mom also comes with difficult lows, since all kids struggle with the world and with
their parents. It's their job. While you say "so many things go wrong," I actually count two in your
letter-losing your baby and your job.  4   But you do have your general health, your talents, your marriage, your friends, your family, and other abilities and interests to move you forward.   5    -Carolyn
A. I don't mean to minimize either; they're life's challenges, and you're facing both.
B. I'm beginning to feel like I can't have things go right.
C. Would you be so kind as to help me with my problems?
D. My job is probably not going to last beyond spring.
E. Whenever you need them, they are proof of your strength.
F. For some people it's exercise; for some it's giving their time to a goal.
G. Take a deep breath and just take it easy.

When children celebrate a wedding anniversary for the parents, it's not just a celebration for the
parents but for the whole family. There are many types of wedding anniversary gifts.      1    Choosing a
gift for parents that involves the whole family makes the event more special for them.
Budget(預(yù)算)
Children shouldn't spend too much money on the gift. Parents usually know the financial conditions of
their children.     2
     Considerations
An anniversary gift for parents should have two characteristics: customized (訂制的), and something
they can use together. It is not a good idea to choose a gift that only looks good. The gift is celebrating
their time spent together, so it has to be something they both will enjoy.
     Family celebration
One of the biggest achievements of parents is raising children. So some children decide to buy an
anniversary gift that involves the entire family such as a special family vacation.      3
     A party as a gift
4      If it is a milestone anniversary such as a 25th or 50th wedding anniversary, some children
choose to hold a party. The guest list includes all family members who have been close to them over the
years.
     Family-themed gifts
One choice is a family photo taken by a professional or even a painting created by a professional
artist using a family photo as the image to be painted.      5   If the parents don't have a DVD player,
the player can be included as part of the gift.
A. Sometimes gifts don't have to be objects bought with money.
B. Brothers and sisters can share the cost of the party.
C. And these gifts reflect a lot of thought and effort.
D. So the gift should be one selected specially for parents.
E. Overspending can make parents uncomfortable and worried.
F. This way, the family can be together to celebrate the anniversary.
G. Another nice gift is making a DVD with old videotapes of family events.

The person behind you constantly kicks the back of your seat. Your talkative seatmate doesn't
understand your need for sleep. And the aircraft's bathroom is a total mess. These situations can make
even a short flight unbearable .Hopefully you don't cause these unpleasant experiences for others.  1
Always recline(向后傾斜) your seat slowly. There's nothing worse than suddenly being hit in the
knees by the seat in front of you. In addition, don't keep your seat reclined for the entire flight. Always
keep it upright during mealtimes. And remember to put it in the upright position before going to the
restroom (or anytime you leave your seat.)
2  Wait until the meal is done and all the food trays (盤子)have been collected .It's hard for
passengers to stand up to let you pass when they still have their food trays. And when using the
bathroom .always clean up after yourself -the next user will be grateful !
Keep your body-and your possessions-to yourself as much as possible so as not to crowd your
in-flight seatmate(s) .Share the armrest , especially on a long flight .Also, be careful not to kick or push
on the seat in front of you.
While some people enjoy chatting with other passengers during a flight, not everyone does. Some
people may want to nap ,read or work.  3
If you are traveling with someone and want to chat, keep your voices low.   4   People can still hear
through your headphones if the volume is too high.
When exiting the plane, if others are having trouble with their carry-on luggage .help them if you can.
If you can't help ,wait patiently, and don't push past people to get off the airplane. On your flight ,
remember the golden rule:   5
A. Don't leave your carry-on in the aircraft.
B. If the conversation seems one-sided , you should notice it.
C. Treat others the way you want to be treated!
D. Avoid going to the bathroom during mealtimes.
E. Instead ,you can set an example by following these common airplane courtesies (禮貌).
F. It is not polite to talk loudly in the aircraft.
G. If using electronic gadgets (小裝置), keep the volume down.
