Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the USA or Australia. They also want their children to take extra courses or activities where they will either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes that will give them a head start in life. 71 So parents will spend unreasonable amount of money on education. 72
However, what most parents fail to see is that the best education they can give their children is usually very cheap.
Parents can see that their children’s skills vary. Some children are skilled in some areas while poor in others. 73
The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but not teaching them the most important skills: they need to be confident, happy and clever.
Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.
Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. 74 It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. The result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of confidence.
Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse his interest.he will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. 75 And that is more important.
A. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is.
B. These activities are teaching a child not only to read a book, but also to think , to use his mind.
C. What most parents fail to realize though,is that today’s children lack self-respect and self-confidence.
D. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.
E. The more cost in education, the better the result will be.
F. Cooking demands patience and time.

Test-taking tips
Do you sweat, check your pencil, and feel butterflies in your stomach as your teacher hands out the test paper? A lot of people feel anxious when it is time to take a test. Here are some tips for taking tests:
1 .Your memory recall will be much better if you have had enough rest. In a scientific study, people who got enough sleep before taking a math test did better than those who stayed up all night studying.
Read the test through first. Once you have the test paper in front of you, read over the entire test, checking out how long it is and all the parts that you are expected to complete. 2 .If something seems unclear before you start, do not panic: ask the teacher.
Focus on addressing each question individually. 3 . Instead, answer the best way you can or skip over the question and come back to it after you have answered other questions.
Relax. 4 .Of course you can not get up and move around in the middle of a test, but you can wiggle (扭動(dòng)) your fingers and toes, take four or five deep breaths. As we all know, It can be easy to forget things we know well. During a test, if you forget something and start to get tense, it suddenly becomes much more difficult to remember.
Finished already? Although most teachers will let you hand your test paper in early, it is usually a good idea to spend any extra time checking over your work. 5 .On the other hand, if you have 5 minutes until the bell rings and you are still writing, wind up whatever you are working on without panic.
A. Be sure you have studied properly. B. Get enough sleep the night before the test. C. This will allow you to decide how much time you have for each section. D. As you take the test, if you do not know an answer, do not worry about it. E. As the teacher hands out the test paper, be sure you know what is expected of you. F. You can also add details that you may not have thought you’d have time for. G. If you are so nervous that you blank out, you might need a mini-break. |

A man came home from work late, tired and found his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door.
“Daddy, may I ask you a question?” “Yeah, sure, what is it?” replied the man. 71 “If you must know, I make $20 an hour.” “Oh,” the little boy replied, with his head down. Then he looked up and said, “Daddy, may I borrow $10?” The father was angry, “If the only reason you asked for that is to borrow some money to buy a silly toy, then you should go to bed.” 72
After about an hour or so, the man calmed down, and started to think. Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often. 73 “Are you asleep, son?” He opened the door and asked. “No, Daddy,” replied the boy. “I’ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you just now.” said the man, “Here’s the $10 you asked for.” 74 “Oh, thank you, Daddy!” he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some small change. 75 “Why do you want more money if you have already had some?” the father asked angrily.
“Because I didn’t have enough, but now I do.” The little boy replied, “Daddy, I have $20 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home earlier tomorrow, I would like to have dinner with you.”

Today, the Internet is in a few cars; tomorrow, broadband (寬帶) will be in all of them. Any capability a personal computer has, a car will have, including two – way wireless communications for receiving e – mail, music, and movies. When you’re crossing the lonely place, the kids can watch TV if they’re bored. Every passenger will have a video feed.
|
62.
Every car will have a self – driving system linked to GPS satellites. Radar sensors (傳感器) will track nearby cars. On the freeway, they’ll slow your car when the car ahead of you slows; in town, they’ll help you park without hitting other cars. At rush hour, you’ll get the routes around traffic jams and accidents. The self – driving system in a car makes it possible for the car to drive itself, though some scientists say that’s 30 to 40 years off.
|
63.
Motor vehicles today represent 20 to 30 percent of the world’s energy use. In the near future, a small gasoline engine and an electric motor will be brought together. Drivers will use electricity in a storage battery for short distances. Longer term, cars might burn hydrogen or use a fuel cell that converts a fuel like hydrogen and combines it with oxygen to create power. Then the waste will be pure water.
|
64.
You’ll use the voice control: “Make it a bit cooler” or “find me country music”. Lighter, more reliable electronic controls replace mechanical controls. Fiber optics (光纖) replace electrical wires and light bulbs. Seats will be air – conditioned. The car will travel with one side higher than the other when turning, just as an airplane does now.

65.
Cars will avoid some accidents by maintaining safe following distances, and by sensing sleepy or drunk drivers. Air bags will adapt for every passenger according to their size, weight, and position in case accidents happen.

The right pair of exercise shoes can do a lot to prevent discomfort and injuries, personal trainers say. Here are some shopping tips:
71 Depending on your workout, shoes designed for walking, running, tennis, or something else that will provide the best support for your feet.
Shop when you normally exercise. Feet actually get bigger throughout the day, sometimes swelling(腫脹) up as much as a half-size by nighttime. 72
Try them on .Never take a pair of exercise shoes based only on the size of footwear you normally buy. Bring the type of socks you’d wear to work out and go for a walk through the store.
73 you should be able to spread your toes out comfortably. Make sure there’s about a half-inch of space between them and the front of the shoe. The back should fit snugly(warmly and comfortably) against your heel and not move up and down. If your feet are different sizes, buy based on the larger one.
Talk to an expert. Shoe salesmen and personal trainers can study your stride(步伐) and the shape of your feet. 74
75 Many trainers recommend changing footwear every three to five months, if possible, to maintain(保持) proper cushioning (軟墊) and support.
One tip: if you have to tie your shoes very tightly to feel a good amount of support, they may be ready to go.
A.Think about how much you can afford to buy the workout shoes. |
B.Consider your type of exercises. |
C.Focus on fit |
D.So don’t shop first thing in the morning if you often work out in the evening. |
E.Pay more attention to new style shoes.
F.Replace worn shoes regularly
G.Usually they can recommend the best shoes to guard against injuries.
