7.Dogs are known for their sense of smell.They can find missing people and things like bombs and illegal drugs.Now a study suggests that the animal known as man's best friend can even find
bladder(膀胱)cancer.
Cancer cells are thought to produce chemicals with unusual odors(氣味).Researchers think dogs have the ability to smell these odors,even in very small amounts,in urine(尿).The sense of smell in dogs is thousands of times better than in humans.
The study follows reports of cases where,for example,a dog showed great interest in a growth on the leg of its owner.The man was later found to be skin cancer.
Carolyn Willis led a team of researchers at Amersham Hospital in England.They trained different kinds of dogs for the experiment.The study involved urine collected from bladder cancer patients,from people with other diseases and from healthy people.
Each dog was tested 8times.In each test there were 7samples for the dogs to smell.The dog should signal the one from a bladder cancer patient by lying down next to it.Two cocker(一種獵犬)dogs were correct 56percent of the time.But the scientists reported an average success rate of 41percent.
The British Medical Journal published the research.In all,36bladder cancer patients and 108other people took part.During training,all the dogs reportedly even identified(認(rèn)出)a cancer in a person who had tested healthy before the study.Doctors found a growth on the person's right kidney(腎).
Carolyn Willis says dogs could help scientists identify the combined chemicals produced by bladder cancer.That information could then be used to develop machines to test for the chemicals.The team also plans to use dogs to help identify markers for other kinds of cancer.

12.Science can't explain the power of pets,but many studies have shown that the company of pets can help lower blood pressure (血壓) and raise chances of recovering from a heart attack,reduce loneliness and spread all-round good cheer.
Any owner will tell you how much joy a pet brings.For some,an animal provides more comfort than a husband/wife.A 2002study by Karen Allen of the State University of New York measured stress (緊張) levels and blood pressure in people-half of them pet owners-while they performed 5minutes of mental arithmetic (算術(shù)) or held a hand in ice water.Subjects completed the tasks alone,with a husband/wife,a close friend or with a pet.People with pets did it best.Those tested with their animal friends had smaller change in blood pressure and returned most quickly to baseline heart rates.With pets in the room,people also made fewer math mistakes than when doing in front of other companions.It seems people feel more relaxed (放松)around pets,says Allen,who thinks it may be because pets don't judge.

28.What does the text mainly discuss?A

19.In 1769,William Smith was born in a little town in Oxfordshire,England.He received basic village schooling but mostly he wandered on his uncle's farm collecting the fossils(化石) in the rocks of the Cotswold hills.When he grew older,Smith learned surveying from books and at 18he learned from a local surveyor.He then began to teach himself geology (地質(zhì)學(xué)).
When he was 24,he went to work for the company that was digging the Somerset Coal Canal in the south of England.This job gave Smith an opportunity to study the fresh strata(地層) created by the newly dug canal.He later worked on similar jobs across England all the while studying strata and collecting all the fossils he could find.Smith used mail coaches to travel 10,000miles per year.In 1815he published the first modern geological map A Map of the Strata of England and Wales with a Part of Scotland.
In 1831when Smith was recognized by the Geological Society of London as the"father of English geology",it was not only for his maps but also for something even more important.People had hoped strata could be used to calculate(計算出) geological time,but scientists found the sequences(順序) of rocks sometimes differed from area to area and that no rock type was ever going to become a dependable time marker.Even without the problem of regional differences,rocks present a difficulty as unique time markers.Quartz(石英) is quartz; there's no difference between two-million-year-old quartz and quartz created over 500million years ago.
As he collected fossils from strata,Smith noticed the fossils told a different story from the rocks.Particularly in the younger strata,the rocks were often so similar that he had trouble distinguishing(區(qū)別) the strata,but he never had trouble telling the fossils apart.Some fossils appear in many strata,but others occur only in a few strata,and a few species had their births and extinctions(滅絕) within one particular strata.Fossils are thus identifying markers for particular periods in Earth's history.
28.What do we know about young Smith?B
A.He spent most of his time reading.
B.He showed much interest in geology.
C.He learned surveying just by himself.
D.He received a very good formal education.
29.Which can be used to describe Smith according to Paragraph 2?D
A.Adventurous and brave.
B.Talented and productive.
C.Warm-hearted and honest.
D.Hard-working and devoted.
30.The author mentions quartz to show thatA.
A.no rock can be a reliable time marker
B.no quartz can be found in recent times
C.quartz can fell people rocks, geological time
D.the sequences of rocks differ from area to area
31.Which of the following is Smith's greatest achievement?B
A.He drew many maps of strata.
B.He used fossils to identify strata.
