15.It's time to go back to school! Both Chinese and American students are getting ready (61)forthe first day of school. But they are not doing it(62)inthe same way.
Most Chinese schools start on the same day in September,(63)but/whileUS schools don't.Classes can begin any time between August and September. Each school gets to decide  (64)whentheir classes will start.Except for first-year students, every year most Chinese students see the same teachers and classmates.US students, however, see some big (65)changes(change).
In American high schools,subjects(66)are divided(divide) into different levels.Students can make their choices about favorite teachers and courses (67)based(base) on their abilities and interests. This means that every year,US students go to different classrooms for all of their different classes.
Also, students of your age in the US go to school a few days early (68)to pick(pick) their own schedule. Then they get a big welcome or orientation (迎新會(huì)).For first-year students, the first day of school also means they can get (69)theirown lockers (儲物柜).Elementary school students in the US have to share lockers with their classmates. But once they make it to junior high,they(70)finally(final) have their own place to store bags and coats!

7.Crossroads International
How does Crossroads work?
Crossroads is a resource network.We take goods Hong Kong doesn't want and give them to people who badly need them.We collect those goods and give them out in the welfare arena (福利院) in Hong Kong,Mainland China,elsewhere in Asia,Eastern Europe and Africa.So Crossroads is just that:a Crossroads between need and resource.
Who do we help?
The welfare agencies we help do not run on large budgets (預(yù)算).They are grass-root groups who have seen a need and tried to meet it.They can't get the job done without back-up,though,so our task is to help them do their task.Our warehouse is full of goods,from computers to high chairs,clothing to books,stationery to medical provision,cupboards to dining sets.They send us a list of their needs and we try to match it with the resource we have in stock.

What can I do?
We are always in need of people.We have a lot of tasks.If you are volunteering regularly,we can offer work in some of the following categories,some of the time.You are welcome to number your top three choices and we will do our best to accommodate (提供) them.

5.Watching some children trying to catch butterflies on a hot August afternoon,I was reminded of an incident in my own childhood.When I was a boy of 12in South Carolina,something happened to me that cured me forever of wanting to put any wild creature in a cage.
We lived on the edge of a wood,and every evening at dusk the mockingbirds would come and rest in the trees and sing.There isn't a musical instrument made by man that can produce a more beautiful sound than the song of the mockingbird.
I decided that I would catch a young bird and keep it in a cage and in that way would have my own private musician.
I finally succeeded in catching one and put it in a cage.At first,in its fright at being captured,the bird fluttered about the cage,but eventually it settled down in its new home.I felt very pleased with myself and looked forward to some beautiful singing from my tiny musician.
I had left the cage out on our back porch,and on the second day of the bird's captivity my new pet's mother flew to the cage with food in her mouth.The baby bird ate everything she brought to it.I was pleased to see this.Certainly the mother knew better than I how to feed her baby.
The following morning when I went to see how my captive(被俘虜?shù)模?nbsp;was doing,I discovered it on the floor of the cage,dead.I was shocked!What had happened!I had taken excellent care of my little bird,or so I thought.
Arthur Wayne,the famous ornithologist,happened to be visiting my father at the time,hearing me crying over the death of my bird,explained what had occurred."A mother mocking bird,finding her young in a cage,will sometimes bring it poison berries.She thinks it better for her young to die than to live in captivity."
Never since then have I caught any living creature and put it in a cage.All living creatures have a right to live free.
