Have you ever suddenly felt that someone you knew was in trouble —and was he? Have you ever dreamed something that came true later? Maybe you have ESP(特異功能). ESP stands for Extrasensory Perception. It may be called a sixth sense. It seems to let people know about events before they happen, or events that are happening some distance away.

Here’s an example. A woman was ironing clothes. Suddenly she screamed, “My father is dead! I saw him sitting in the chair!” Just then, a telegram came. The woman’s father died of a heart attack. He died sitting in a chair.

There are thousands of stories like this one on record. Scientists are studying them to find out what’s behind these strange mental messages. Here’s another example —one of hundreds of dreams that have come true.

A man dreamed he was walking along a road when a horse and carriage came by. The driver said, “There’s room for one more.” The man felt the driver seemed dead, so he ran away. The next day, when the man was getting on a crowded bus, the bus driver said. “There’s room for one more.”

Then the man saw that the driver’s face was the same face he had seen in the dream. He wouldn’t get on the bus. As the bus drove off, it crashed and burst into flames. Everyone was killed!

Some people say stories like these are coincidences. Others, including some scientists, say that ESP is real. From studies of ESP, we may someday learn more about the human mind.

1.According to the passage, the author believes that the sixth sense is ______.

A. possible B. imaginative

C. not real D. impossible

2.By studying ESP, scientists may get to ______.

A. learn how people tell lies

B. know more about human dreams

C. know more about human mind

D. learn how strange things happen

3.In the last paragraph the underlined word “coincidences” probably means “______”.

A. things that may not happen

B. things that happen by accident

C. things that must happen

D. things that happen in a dream

4.This article is mainly about ______.

A. the human dream B. a crowded bus

C. the human mind D. the sixth sense

A Bite of China, featuring delicious Chinese food, has attracted countless viewers, and moved many to tears.

A Bite of China is a serious documentary providing a unique view of Chinese as well as the relations between people and food and between people and society from the view of food. The touching documentary reminds some people of their mother, and makes some realize that every grain comes from hard and laborious work. Some people see patriotism(愛國精神) in the documentary, and some consider it a great cultural export.

How did this documentary achieve a great influence beyond its subject matter in such a short time?

“It is not empty propaganda(宣傳) about China’s splendid food culture. Instead, it shows the techniques used in making food and their production process as well as the lives of ordinary people, thus striking a chord(共鳴) with the audience,” an Internet user said. The success of the documentary should be owed to sincerity and reality. Nowadays, many works of art that have high investment, high technology, and magnificent scenes lack nothing but sincerity and reality.

A Bite of China shows that a commercial documentary promoting patriotism can be full of touching details, that the emotions of ordinary Chinese people should be exhibited even in publicizing(宣傳) China overseas, and that even a completely commercial program can achieve both artistic and commercial success.

“We made this documentary with our respect and love for food,” said director Chen Xiaoqing. Being sincere is the most important thing for artists because they cannot move others unless they themselves are first moved, and cannot convince others unless they themselves are first convinced. Sincerity is the “secret” for making this documentary so popular, and every cultural creator should learn from its success.

1.According to the passage, A Bite of China is _______.

A. a book B. a film

C. a newspaper D. a TV program

2.What can you find in A Bite of China?

A. Relations between people and food.

B. Real lives of all Chinese people.

C. Patriotic stories of Chinese people.

D. processes of preparing food.

3.From the passage, it can be inferred that ________.

A. The documentary is so successful that no one can surpass (超越) it.

B. Different people can get different messages from the documentary.

C. The documentary should have shown China’s splendid food culture.

D. Many art works fail to reflect (反映) reality and high technology.

4.The main idea of the last paragraph is that ________.

A. Director’s respect and love for food.

B. The secret of the documentary’s success.

C. The influence of the documentary.

D. The popularity of the documentary.

Students who date (約會) in middle school have significantly worse study skills, are four times more likely to drop out of school and report twice as much alcohol and tobacco use than their single classmates, according to new research from the University of Georgia.

“Romantic relationships are a symbol of adolescence(青春期), but very few studies have examined how adolescents are different in the development of these relationships.” said Pamela Orpinas, study author and professor in the College of Public Health.

Orpinas followed a group of 624 students over a seven-year period from 6th to 12th grade. Each year, the group of students completed a survey indicating whether they had dated and reported the frequency of different behaviors, including the use of drugs and alcohol. Their teachers completed questionnaires (調(diào)查表) about the students' academic efforts. He found some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students had the best study skills according to their teachers. Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school.

“At all points in time, teachers rated the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and the students with the highest dating as having the worst study skills,” according to the journal article. Study skills refer to behaviors that lead to academic success such as doing work for extra credit, being well organized, finishing homework, working hard and reading assigned chapters.

“Dating a classmate may have the same emotional complications of dating a co-worker,” Orpinas said, “When the couple break up, they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps witness the ex-partner dating someone else. It is reasonable to think this could be linked to depression and divert (轉(zhuǎn)移) attention from studying.”

“Dating should not be considered a ceremony of growth in middle school.”O(jiān)rpinas concluded.

A. have poorer academic performances

A. followed a group of students of 6th and 12th grade

B. found that the students' study skills have connection with their frequency of dating

C. completed questionnaires about the students' academic efforts

D. completed a survey and a report each year

3.What can possibly happen to the school couples after they break up?

A. They will miss their ex-partners sometimes.

B. They don't want to see each other any longer.

C. Their attention to studying will be affected.

D. They will think it's reasonable to get depressed.

4.Orpinas’ attitude towards dating in middle school is _____.
