閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C、D)中,選出最佳選項。

Besides this question of the time given to pronunciation, there are two other requirements for the teacher:the first, knowledge;the second, technique.

It is important that the teacher should be in possession of the necessary information. This can generally be go form books. It is possible to get from books some idea of the speech;and of what we call general phonetic rules. It is also possible in this way to get a clear mental picture of the relationship between the sounds of different languages, between the speech habits of English people and those,of your students.Unless the teacher has such a picture, any explanations he makes on his students'pronunciation are unlikely to be of much use,and lesson time spent on Pronunciation may well be wasted.

But it does not follow that you can teach pronunciation successfully as soon as you have read the necessary books. It depends, after that, what use you make of your knowledge;and this is a matter of technique.

Now the first and most important part of a language teacher's technique is his own performance, his ability to show off the spoken language,in every detail of sound as well as in fluent speaking,so that the student's ability for imitation is given the fullest space and encouragement. The teacher, then, should be as perfect a model in this field as he can make himself. And to make his own performance better, however satisfactory this may be,the modern teacher has in his hand recordings and a radio,to supply the real voices of native speakers,or,if the teacher happens to be a native speaker himself,or speaks just like one, then to change the method of presenting the language material.

However, the process of showing pronunciation, whether by personal ex-ample or with the help of machines,is only the beginning of teaching pronunciation. The technique of teaching each sound also needs to be considered.

1.How might the teacher find himself wasting lesson time?

[ ]

A.By spending lesson time on pronunciation.

B.Bu making ill-informed explanations upon pronunciation.

C.By not using books on phonetics in the classroom.

D.By not giving students a clear mental picture of the difference between

sounds.

2.Students have an ability for imitation which is________.

[ ]

A.plain and obvious

B.well developed

C.not yet developed

D.too weak to be useful

3.What is the main point the author makes about imitation of the teacher?

[ ]

A.It is a matter of secondary importance.

B.Students should be given every chance for it.

C.It depends on the student's ability.

D.Teachers are perfect models for students to imitate.

4.TO Someone teaching his own language to foreigners mechanical aids can________.

[ ]

A.improve his own performance

B.replace his own performance

C.provide examples of native speech

B.a(chǎn)n exercise of value in itself

C.a(chǎn)n example of the use of mechanical aids

讀寫任務(wù)

閱讀下面短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。

To many people even the word “work” sounds unpleasant ,not necessarily because they are lazy. The same man, who dislikes his job in the factory or even in the office ,may work hard at the weekend ,painting the house or digging the garden.

What is the reason ,then ?In most cases ,it is because these people simply do not enjoy the Job they are doing. It does not give them any real satisfaction. It may be quite easy ,like making up wooden boxes ,but it is very boring.Very often they are doing a job which is just a small part of a much larger one ,such as attaching a door handle to a car.But the part they play in actually making the car is so small that they can never say:I have made something !

Yet in modern society somebody has to do ordinary jobs such as cleaning streets because this Is the way society is organized ,No matter how ordinary a job is, it plays a part in society and therefore deserves our due respect.Society cannot function a single day without the “dull and boring” jobs.

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad;that it sets one person against another;that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self worth relied (依賴)on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life and death affairs. In their single minded pursuit(追求)of success, the development,of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.?

However, while sonic seem to be lost in die desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only die winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people,I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse:“I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve(緩解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

1. What does this passage mainly talk about? ?

A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.?

B. Opinions about competition are different among people.?

C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.?

D. Failures are necessary experiences in competition.?

2. Why do some people favor competition according to the passage? ?

A. It pushes society forward.

B. It builds up a sense of duty.?

C. It improves personal abilities.

D. It encourages individual efforts.?

3. The underlined phrase “the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 means .

A. those who try their best to win ?

B. those who value competition most highly ?

C. those who are against competition most strongly ?

D. those who rely on others most for success?

4. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a “desire to fail”?

A. One’s worth lies in his performance compared with others.?

B. One’s success in competition needs great efforts.?

C. One’s achievement is determined by his particular skills.?

D. One’s success is based on how hard he has tried.

5. Which point of view may the author agree to? ?

A. Every effort should be paid back.?

B. Competition should be encouraged.?

C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.?

D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.?

Life on land probably began about 430 million years ago, though it has stayed in the water for perhaps as much as 3,000 million years. When we think of the first thing on land, we probably think of strange animals coming out of the oceans, but in fact no animals could have been living if plants had not been on land first. Plants had to be on land before animals arrived. They supplied the first land animals with the surrounding and food necessity, since then, the plants, are the only form of life that is able to get and store energy.
The first plants to stay out of the water were probably certain kinds of algae(海藻)which were followed by other plants that grew close to the ground and needed water in which to reproduce. Once the move to land had been made, however, evolution(進化)happened quickly. By the end of 100 million years, plants had developed their roots(根), and some had got tree -like forms since height was very important in gaining sunlight. About 300 million years ago, much of the world was covered with forests of huge trees. In most ways they were like modern trees. They had roots, leaves, wood, but mostly they had not developed seeds.
59.The main idea of the first paragraph is ________.
  A. life on land probably began 430 years ago

  D. Evolution began after animals appeared on land.
