【題目】“Sorry seems to be the hardest word”— that is one of Elton John's most popular songs. But not every public figure seems to find it so tough to say that powerful five-letter word.

In recent days public figures, from politicians to stars, have all publicly expressed remorse. But with so much remorse, how can we tell a forced apology from a heartfelt expression of remorse?

Specifically, saying sorry should be a realization that something you have said or done has hurt someone and you want to make amends (彌補). "People want the response to be personal to them. They want to feel that they're being listened to and taken seriously," says Martin Stone.

Firstly, it is important to show that you understand. It is vital that any group or a person making an apology understands the focus — is it sorry for the way it's acted or is it sorry that the complainant feels the way they do? Watch out for the speed of response. The quicker the apology comes, the better it indicates that the person making it has felt an immediate sense of guilt.

If sincere, the person making the apology will be looking for clues (線索) to see if he or she is being understood, such as eye contact and facial expressions. Performed apologies always have a sense of being "acted out", and are often accompanied by too many unnatural gestures.

For a sincere apology, it is also important to avoid promises that can't be kept. Don't say that you'll make sure that this will not happen again if you're not confident that it won't. It could come back to bite you. And do remember that the use of "but" can hugely change the tone (語氣) of an apology. As Stone points out, "I'm sorry but..." sounds like you are making excuses and aren't actually taking any form of responsibility.

1What is the purpose of the text?

A. To explain what a good apology is.

B. To discuss how to give a formal apology.

C. To show why we should apologize in life.

D. To teach us how to tell if an apology is sincere:

2What does the underlined word "remorse" probably mean?

A. Pain. B. Worry.

C. Regret. D. Doubt.

3Which of the following indicates it's a "performed" apology?

A. Swearing it will not happen again.

B. Avoiding eye contact with the listener.

C. Showing you understand his/her feelings.

D. Paying attention to the listener's reaction.

4What is stressed in the last paragraph?

A. The attitude. B. The tone of voice.

C. The body language. D. The choice of language.

【題目】How Plants Branch Out to Access Water

New research has discovered how plant roots sense the availability of water in soil and then adapt (適應)their shape to acquire water. The discovery could enable crops to be raised which are more adaptive to changes in climate conditions, such as the absence of water, and help ensure food safety in the future.

These findings, published in the journal Science, describe a new mechanism(機制) discovered by cooperating teams at the universities of Nottingham and Durham.

Roots are very important for plants to acquire water and nutrients(營養(yǎng))from the soil. Water is necessary to plant growth , yet changing climatic conditions makes acquiring water from soil even more challenging. Plants are able to adapt to different soil moisture(濕潤)conditions by changing their roots.

The researchers discovered that plant roots lacking a branching master gene were no longer able to branch out. They found that when roots have access to moisture, the certain gene remains active and promotes root branching, but when put in air, the gene is in activated, preventing root branching. The research has identified the certain protein which can inactivate root branching.

Professor Sadanandom explained: "This is hugely exciting as it opens up the possibility for us to help develop plants that could continue to branch roots even in challenging conditions such as the absence of water.'

Professor Bennett concluded: "Water is the key to plant growth, development and their survival. By studying how plant roots change their branching in response(回應)to water availability, we have uncovered a new mechanism. This opens the way to develop new crops better adapted to climate change and to help deliver global food safety."

It is absolutely imperative to ensure food safety worldwide. Crop production must double by 2050 to keep pace with global population growth. This target is even more challenging considering the effect of climate change on water availability. In this case, developing crops with better ability to acquire water would provide a solution.

1The findings of the research may have a positive effect on several global issues EXCEPT

A.ensuring food safetyB.preserving the agriculture

C.solving the absence of waterD.increasing crop production

2With the help of the findings, plants may be able to ________.

A.take in more nutrientsB.change inactivated roots

C.grow in challenging conditionsD.branch out without a special gene.

3Which of the following best explains “imperative" in the last paragraph?

A.effective.B.hopeful.

C.impractical.D.urgent.

4What is the new mechanism mentioned by Professor Bennett?

A.How a branching master gene responds to a particular nutrient.

B.How plant roots change their shape according to the soil moisture.

C.Why plants have different abilities to adapt to soil moisture conditions.

D.How the certain protein in activates root branching when accessible to water.

With more than 90 million vlogs available online, and 2,000 posted every hour on the YouTube video-sharing site, CBS News says they are mainstream with people born after 1995.

2 More young Chinese people have become inspired to grab a camera and recount the details of their day on Sina Weibo, Bilibili or WeChat Moments.

Chinese vlogger Wang Xiaoguang is an example of a good storyteller. In one of his popular vlog posts, Wang tells the story of traveling to Japan. While there, he took a ride in the wrong direction and got lost. Worse, he forgot to bring a phone charger. 3

Another key aspect of vlogs is that the content is based on everyday life, according to Ouyang Nana, 18, a young Chinese musician. She documents her life at Berklee College of Music. Ordinary as vlogs are, as many as 15 million fans share her wows and woes (喜怒哀樂) on a daily basis.

4 Peng Yixuan, a news reporter with China Daily, recorded her first experience attending and reporting on the two sessions in March of this year. With a relaxed, chatty and personal approach, she presented the conferences, “bringing more warmth” to the grand political event, according to People’s Daily.

There are popular vlogs for beauty, gaming, fashion, food and travel. Vloggers are learning new ways to experience the thrill of them. 5 Then what are you waiting for? Grab a camera!
