The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning.You know it will soon be over and there's a kind of expectation and excitement in that.The seat of course,has become harder as the hours have passed.By now you've sat with your legs crossed,with your hands in your lap,with your hands on the arm rests---even with your hands crossed behind your head.The end comes just at no more ways to sit.

1.Sabina Caste Franco Rome October 16,2011-The U.N.World Food program says there are growing concerns over food insecurity in the developing world.Some of those concerns are discussed in a report to agree with the anniversary Sunday of World Food Day.
The theme for World Food Day 2011is"Food Prices-From Crisis to Stability".A ceremony to mark World Food Day will be held Monday at the headquarters of the U.N.Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome.Rising food prices,weather emergencies and political instability are deepening the struggle of families trying to provide for their households in many developing nations.This year's"State of Food Insecurity in the World"report,published last week,focuses on the impact of food price volatility,confirming that high,unpredictable prices are likely to continue.The report highlighted how poor consumers,small farmers and countries dependent on imports,especially in Africa,have been deeply affected by the food and economic crises.
Gregory Barrow is with the World Food Program in Rome."If you look at the places where World Food program works particularly in developing countries,you see populations of people who might be spending 60,70,80percent of their salaries on purchasing food for their families".Barrow added that if prices become changeful and generally start rising,even by a small amount,it means that many of these people are going to struggle to put nutritious food on their tables.
The report also showed that even short-term fluctuations (波動) in prices can have a long-term effect on development,and that cutting back on nutritious food in the first 1,000days of a child's life can affect mental and physical development and finally,future earning capacity.The United Nations has programs in place aimed at reducing the number of hungry people by one-half by 2015.But most observers agree this target is unlikely to be reached.

18.There is a boy called Bill in my gym class who has unbearably yellow teeth that almost make everyone feel unpleasant.Recently another boy told Bill that he should"go Ajax"his teeth.Bill was crushed.If the other boy had been thinking,he would have realized that there is a better way to handle such a situation.He could have dealt with it with tact.He could have showed this hurtful truth in a more careful,sensitive way-that's"tact".
If a person isn't sensitive to another's feelings,there is no way he or she can be tactful.Yesterday,my 5-year-old brother proudly announced that he had cleaned the screen on our television set.Unfortunately,he used furniture polish,which produced an oily film on the television screen.My mother smiled arid thanked him for his efforts-and then showed how to clean the screen properly.Her sensitivity enables my brother to keep his self-respect.Yet,sensitivity alone does not make tact.
"Tactfulness"also requires"truthfulness".Doctors,for example must be truthful.If a patient has just been disabled in an accident,a tactful doctor will tell the truth-but express it with sensitivity.The doctor may try to give the patient hope by telling them curing techniques under study or about advanced equipment now available.Doctors must use tact with patients'relatives as well.Instead of bluntly saying,"Your husband is disabled,"a doctor might say,"I'm sorry,but your husband has lost feeling in his legs and…"
Tact should not be confused with trickery.Trickery occurs when a nurse is about to give a patient an injection(注射) and says,"This won't hurt a bit."Instead of trickery,the nurse might guarantee the patient that the discomfort of the injection is a small thing compared to the benefits of it.It would also be thoughtful for the nurse to tell the patients about some of these benefits.
Tact is a wonderful skill to have,and tactful people are usually admired and respected.Without tact our society would become an intolerable place to live in.

68.The underlined word"crushed"in the first paragraph probably meansD.

A.sensitive and tactful                   B.sensitive but not tactful enough

2.In the Internet age, speed reading is a necessary and important skill. We skim over articles and e-mails to try to get key words and the main idea of the text. With so much information through our electronic devices (電子設備),it would be impossible to get through everything if we read word by word, line by line. However,a new trend calls on people to enjoy reading slowly.
A recent story from The Wall Street Journal reported on a book club in Wellington,New Zealand, where members meet in a café and turn off their smartphones. They sit back in comfortable chairs and read in silence for an hour.
Unlike typical book clubs, the point of the slow reading club isn't to exchange ideas about certain books, but to get away from electronic devices and read in a quiet, relaxed environment.According to the story, the Wellington book club is just one example of a movement started by book lovers who miss the traditional way of reading.
Traditional readers, like Maura Kelly, say a regular reading habit sharpens the mind, improves concentration, reduces stress levels and deepens the ability to understand others. Some of these benefits have been backed up by science. For example,a study of 300 elderly people published by the journal Neurology last year showed that adults who take part in activities that use their brain, such as reading, suffer less memory loss as they get older.Another study published last year in Science showed that reading novels helps people understand others'mental states and beliefs-a key skill in building relationships.
Yet technology has made us less careful readers.Computer and phone screens have changed our reading patterns from the top-to-bottom,left-to-right reading order we traditionally used,to a wild skimming pattern as we hunt for important words and information.Reading text online that has many links to other web pages also leads to weaker comprehension than reading plain text. The Internet may have made us stupider, says British journalist Patrick Kingsley, only half joking.Because of the Internet,he says we have become very good at collecting a wi de range of factual tidbits (花邊新聞),but we are also gradually forgetting how to sit back, think and connect all these facts with each other.
25.Speed reading is a necessary and important skill in the Internet age because peopleC.
A.no longer read word by word, line by line
B.have to get the meaning faster
C.have much more information to read
D.must use their smartphones more frequently

A.make coffee for the other members
B.read peacefully for an hour
C.regularly exchange ideas about books
D.turn off their smartphones for sleeping
27.According to the Neurology study, who is most likely to suffer memory loss?A
A.A 79-year-old woman who reads regularly.
B.A 17-year-old middle school student who seldom reads.
C.A healthy 24-year-old university graduate who often plays games.
D.A 65-year-old man who rarely reads.

3.When I first told people I was going to work in Cameroon,the most common reaction was:"Why?"The second was:"It's in Africa; you'll die!"The third:"Where is that?"So let me give some answers.I was offered a job that looked interesting in a part of the world I'd never been to before.I'd also long had an interest in Africa,so I decided it was time to find out the reality.
A small amount of research showed that in more than 40years since gaining independence,Cameroon has been a peaceful country with no wars.Not only are there no wars,but Cameroon is a food exporter to the region.
Now,after three years,I can say that these have been the healthiest years of my life!No malaria or any of the other frightening diseases you read about when Africa is mentioned.The worst thing that ever happened to me was a bout of food poisoning-once.
So what is it like to teach here?Well surprisingly not so different from teaching anywhere else.
Most students come to us with a bit of English in their heads.Cameroon is a bilingual country with French and English as official languages,while there are also close to 200local ethnic languages in a country of 16million people.French is the dominant language,spoken by about 80% of the population.
The local school system is very traditional and somewhat strict.Perhaps not surprisingly when there can be up to 150students in the classroom (of which maybe 30have the books,and there are probably seats for 70).
Like anywhere else,students appreciate it if you know a bit about their country,and not just Roger Milla (the top scorer of the 1990World Cup,in case you're wondering).It helps if you know the names of the ten provinces,know who the first president was,or can say a word in a local language.
So in conclusion:Cameroon isn't just football.Not is it war,poverty and disease.It's just life and people,like anywhere else.
