Ann was on her first package trip in Rosas, Spain.
At the hotel, she checked in, and then went to her room to change before dinner. She was just ready to go downstairs when she found that her Spanish money wasn’t in her handbag. She carefully looked in all her luggage, but she couldn’t find it. All she had was a small purse with ten English pound notes in it!
Ann found a place to change her English money. She had very few pesetas(西班牙貨幣單位), and she would be here for two weeks. On her way back to the hotel, Ann bought some cheese, some bread and some oranges. When she got back, she told the manager that her doctor had told her not to eat Spanish food; she’d just have breakfast each day, as she knew the price of hotels included breakfast.
For the rest of her holiday, Ann swam in the hotel swimming pool, or lay on the beach and got a sunbath. When the other tourists went to interesting places, she always said she wasn’t well. In fact, her holiday wasn’t bad, except that she was always hungry. After all, a piece of fruit for lunch, and bread and cheese for supper isn’t very much.
Late in the afternoon of their last day, a girl, Jane, asked her why she never ate with them in the hotel restaurant. Ann told her about her money problems. Jane looked at her for a minute, and then said, “But didn’t you know? The price of this holiday includes everything!”

LONDON---A British judge on Thursday sentenced a businessman who sold fake(假冒的)bomb detectors(探測(cè)器)to 10 years in prison, saying the man hadn’t cared about potentially deadly consequences.
It is believed that James McCormick got about $ 77.8 million from the sales of his detectors---which were based on a kind of golf ball finder---to countries including Iraq, Belgium and Saudi Arabia.
McCormick, 57, was convicted(判罪)of cheats last month and sentenced Thursday at the Old Bailey court in London.
“Your cheating conduct in selling a great amount of useless equipment simply for huge profit promoted a false sense of security and in all probability materially contributed to causing death and injury to innocent people,” Judge Richard Hone told McCormick. “You have neither regret, nor shame, nor any sense of guilt.”
The detectors, sold for up to $ 42, 000 each, were said to be able to find such dangerous objects as bombs under water and from the air. But in fact they “l(fā)acked any grounding in science” and were of no use.
McCormick had told the court that he sold his detectors to the police in Kenya, the prison service in Hong Kong, the army in Egypt and the border control in Thailand.
“I never had any bad results from customers,” he said.

For most people, graduation is an exciting day, but my graduation day was not.
I remember that weekend two years ago. Family and friends had flown in from across the country to   36  the celebration. But just like everyone else in my class, I had watched the  37   turn from bad to worse in my senior year. Almost all of us graduates had degrees, but very uncertain   38 .
The weeks ahead weren’t   39 . I knew my small university town couldn’t offer me any opportunities,   40  I packed up my car and drove to Southern California to find work. But what I thought would take a   41   dragged into two, and then four, and 100 job applications later, I found myself in the exact same   42  as I was before.
You know that feeling when you wake up in   43  ? That feeling became a constant in my life. Days felt like weeks, weeks like months, and those many months felt like everlasting   44 . And the most annoying part was no matter how much I tried, I just couldn’t seem to make any   45  .
So what did I do to keep my good sense? I decided to    46 . Something about putting words on a page made everything seem a little clearer — a little brighter. Something about writing gave me    47 . And if you want something  48 enough, sometimes a little hope is all you   49 !
I put my thoughts into a children’s book. Beyond the River was the story of an unlikely hero, a little fish, who   50  to give up his dream.
And then one day, without any sort of writing degree or contacts in the writing world — just a lot of hard work and determination —I was offered a   51  contract for my first book! After that, things slowly began to fall into   52  . I was offered a second book deal. Then, a few months later, I got an interview with the Walt Disney Company and was   53  shortly after.
Don’t give up. Even if things look   54  now, don’t give up. If you work hard, things will always get better. Often times our dreams lie in wait just a little further upstream ... all we need is the   55   to push beyond the river.

Norah has a cottage on a cliff above a big bay. In winter it could be very nasty because of strong winds and sea spray. In fact, when a gale was blowing, Norah and her husband got used to sleeping in a small room downstairs, because their bedroom upstairs, which faced the gales, had a very big window, and they were afraid that an extra violent gust might break it and blow pieces of broken glass over them.
Also, the salt spray from the sea put an end to many of the colorful plants Norah planted in the garden. She tried putting up a fence to protect them, but the wind just hit it, went up over the top and then down the other side, so in the end she filled the garden with trees and bushes that liked salt.
But most of the summer Norah enjoyed her cottage and garden very much. At weekends she could sit out-of-doors in the sun, looking at the beautiful view, with interesting ships and boats passing by, and she could very easily cycle down to the sea for a swim.
Now, Norah and her husband had plenty of friends and relations. In the summer most of them used to come to enjoy the beautiful place, and in the end it really became quite annoying for Norah and her husband. When they were at home, they found friends and relations arriving, expecting to be given unlimited drinks and meals, and to sit in the sun for hours, talking as if Norah and her husband had nothing else to do but entertain and listen to them.
This went on for several years. Norah did not wish to appear rude by refusing to let her friends and relations in, but on the other hand, she was getting tired every summer.
Then one day Norah was complaining about this to her hairdresser while she was doing her hair. “You’re disturbed by too many uninvited guests, are you?” said the hairdresser. “Why don’t you try my way of escaping?”
“What’s that?” asked Norah.
“Well,” the hairdresser answered, “when the bell rings, I put on my coat and take my shopping bag. If it’s someone I don’t want to see, I say innocently, ‘I’m sorry, but I’ve got to go out. But…’”

B.few friends came to visit them in winter.
C.Friends came to visit them only for drinks and meals
D.Norah was a good cook
小題3:The best title for the passage might be
A.A Good Place of Enjoying the Sea
B.A Warm-hearted Couple
C.A Clever Way of Escaping
D.A Visit to Norah
小題4:What the hairdresser is likely to continue to say in the end is “ ”
A.If I am tired, I say, ‘Sorry, can you come next time?’
B.If it’s someone I like to see, I say, ‘How lucky! I’ve just come in!’
C.If it’s someone I like to see, I say, ‘How happy to see you! I was going shopping, but now I’ve changed my mind.’
D.If it is fine that day, I say, ‘I am tired, but I’ll show you around the place, anyhow.’

An old man lived with his family. The family would eat together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfather’s shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon, dropping to the floor. When he grasped his glass of milk, it often spilled clumsily(笨拙地) at the tablecloth.
With this happening almost every night, the son and daughter-in-law became annoyed with the mess.
“We must do something about grandfather,” said the son.
“I’ve had enough of his milk spilling, noisy eating and food on the floor,” the daughter-in-law agreed.
So the couple set a small table at the corner.
There, grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed their dinner at the dinner table. Since grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in wooden bowls. Sometimes when the family looked in grandfather’s direction, he had tears in his eyes as he ate alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp warnings when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The four-year-old watched it all in silence.
One evening, before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood pieces on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, “What are you making?” Just as sweetly, the boy replied, “Oh, I’m making a little bowl for you and mama to eat your food from when I grow up.” The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.
These words so struck the parents that they were speechless. Then tears streamed down their cheeks. Though no words were spoken, both knew what must be done.
