Because my family were not going to be helpful, I decided I would look for one all by myself and not tell them about it till I’d got one.
I had seen an agency advertised in a local newspaper. I rushed out of the 36 in search of it. I was wildly excited, and as 37 as if I were going on the stage. Finding the 38 quite easily, I ran breathlessly through a door which said “Enter without knocking, if you please.”
The simple atmosphere of the office 39 me. The woman looked carefully at me 40 through her glasses, and then 41 me in a low voice. I answered softly. All of a sudden I started to feel rather 42 ,She wondered why I was looking for this sort of 43 . She wants a 51 immediately. In fact, you would have to start tomorrow by cooking a dinner for ten people.”
“Oh yes,” said I — 52 having cooked for more than four in my life. I 53 her again and again, and rushed out to the 54 telephone box. I collected my thoughts, took a deep breath, and rang the number. I said confidently that I was just what she was looking for.

It’s just a small, white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree. No name, no address. It has peeked through the branches of our tree for the past 10 years.
It all began because my husband Mike hated Christmas. He didn’t hate the true meaning of Christmas, but the commercial aspects of it; overspending, running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry and powder for Grandma…
Knowing he felt this way, I decided one year to bypass the usual shirts, sweaters, ties and so forth. I reached for something special for Mike. The inspiration came in an unusual way.
Our son Kevin, at 12 that year, was wrestling at the junior level at the school he attended and before Christmas, there was a non-league match against a team sponsored by an inner-city church, mostly black.
As the match began, I was alarmed to see that the other team was wrestling without headgear to protect a wrestler’s ears. They obviously could not afford.
Mike shook his head sadly, “I wish just one of them could have won,” he said. “They have a lot of potential, but losing like this could take the heart right out of them.”
Mike loved kids—all kids—and he knew them, having coached little league football, baseball and lacrosse. That’s when the idea for his present came.
That afternoon, I went to a local sporting goods store and bought an assortment of wrestling headgear and shoes and sent them anonymously to the inner-city church.
On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Mike what I had done and that this was his gift from me. His smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year. For each Christmas, I followed the tradition.
The envelope became the highlight of our Christmas. It was always the last thing opened on Christmas morning and our children, ignoring their new toys, would stand with wide-eyed anticipation as their dad lifted the envelope from the tree to reveal its contents.
The tradition has grown and someday will expand even further with our grandchildren standing around the tree with wide-eyed anticipation watching as their fathers take down the envelope. Mike’s spirit, like the Christmas spirit, will always be with us.
1.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Precious Present B.Christmas Gift
C.The Small White Envelope D.The Good Old Tradition
2.Why did Mike hate Christmas according to the passage?
A.He didn’t like the true meaning of Christmas
B.He didn’t like people spending too much money on presents
C.He hated buying presents for Uncle Harry and Grandma
D.He didn’t want to receive gifts like shirts, sweaters or ties.
3.Which is the closest meaning to the underlined phrase “take the heart right out of them”?
A.make them excited
B.make them inspired
C.make them lose confidence
D.make them kill themselves
4.Why was his smile the brightest thing about Christmas that year? ( paragraph 9)
A.He received some sporting goods
B.He found a potential wrestling team
C.His son won the wrestling match
D.His wife sent presents to those poor kids
5.What can we infer from the passage?
A.The tradition of sending presents will pass from generation to generation.
B.The children were eager to get their new toys ignoring the envelope.
C.With the presents, the poor kids will surely win the match one day.
D.Mike’s spirit, like the Christmas spirit, will always be with us.

I was feeling a little blue because my mother had been laid off from her job and she had lots of bills to pay. It left me wondering what was going to happen to us now. But it reassured me some when my mother told me she was relieved to be leaving since her boss wasn't the nicest person to be around.
I got off the college shuttle bus and started walking. That's when I heard piano music and singing rising above the noise of the people and the traffic. I walked a little slower so I could find out where it was coming from. Through the crowd I saw a young lady sitting at a piano with a carriage next to her.[來源:Zxxk.Com]
She was singing songs about love, keeping on trying, and not underestimating the power within yourself. The way she was singing comforted me a bit. I stood there watching her play for about fifteen minutes, thinking that it must take courage to perform on your own in the middle of a crowded New York ferry terminal.
So I stood there listening.
She must have felt my presence because she would occasionally look in my direction. By now I was telling myself that if she could perform in front of hundreds of people she didn't know then I could at least tell her how good she sounded. I walked over and put some money in her carriage and she said, "Thank you." Instead of continuing my way home, I said to her, "I have been going through a rough time lately, but you've made me hopeful again."
"I'm happy that I could help," she replied. "Why are you so sad?"
"Well, my mum told me she had got fired from her job, and that made me sad. I'm not so sure what to do ..."
"You see, here's the problem," she explained. "The way you were walking, your head was down. Don't look defeated, because opportunity comes in different ways and if your head is down you might never see it. You should smile more ... lift your head up."
I smiled faintly, amazed by how she was encouraging me. So, I asked her, "Why are you playing the piano in the middle of a crowded place? I've seen you do this more than once."
She explained to me that she sees a lot of negative people in the world and she tries to alleviate the pain and bring more positivity by sharing motivational music. She told me that when she wasn't making music she studied psychology. So, that was how she knew some of the things she was telling me.
I smiled a little wider because I knew that she was doing a good thing. So, after that we parted, my heart touched and lightened by a musical soul!
