【題目】Why do some people eat too much? Is it because they’re hungry? Or is there a scientific 1(explain)?

There are a number of theories to account2overeating. One factor depends on the time of day. “It’s all part of a routine,” says Randy Seeley,3professor of psychiatry in Cincinnati. “You’re hungry at noon because that’s the time you 4(eat)lunch for the past 100 days.” Another reason we may eat more than necessary is that the body needs to satisfy a salt and sugar balance. Drinking alcohol also increases appetite, because the body wants something 5(absorb) the alcohol.

6(basic), overeating can also be a question of more biological factors. For instance, your body temperature can tell your brain that you feel hungry. “Your body temperature7(drop) when it’s time to eat, and eating warms you up,” says Gina Harlow, a paediatrics professor at Harvard University. Also, the smell of certain foods can make us imagine subconsciously the pleasure of eating8. Harlow adds, “If you know you love French fires, 9(smell)them will make you want to eat them because you know how good they are,10 can lead to eating too many.”

So, the next time you realize you’ve eaten too much, don’t worry about it. You can always blame it on science.

【題目】Fixed or growth mindset which do you have?

We live in an uncertain world with all the technological advances we are experiencing, which meanse is a requirement for a change in midset (思維模式). In order to be on top of our game both personally and organizationally, we need to develop a growth mindset.

A fixed mindset supposes that you have native abilities and are naturally clever or skilled in certain areas of life. When you receive infonnation about how you have performed in a test or set of tasks t you may worry about how you are judged. Our parents probably said to us when we were young,"Since you scored really well in the test, you must be clever." However, by being repeatedly told “You arc clever” or “You are really ga*al al your job”,a person’s self-respect is actually dainagcd.

The growlh - mindest persona view life as a series of exciting challenges and want t o constantly learn. Brain activity occurs in this mindset when they receive information about what they could do belter or improve. They do not view their abilities as fixed or us failure. Learning is king and the more they practice , the more they know they will succeed.

What is important is giving praise around process and not around ability. For example , instead of saying"Since you got a great score, you must be clever" f say " You got a great score, and you must have tried really hard". This creates challenge in indivicluats and

The meanin of mindsets is massive for business. Fixed-mindset managers are not fans of giving feedback (反饋). They do not want to stretch themselves or others because they fear failure. Therefore their business may stand still because there is no risk or innovation (創(chuàng)新) occurring.

Listen from your own fixed mindset for example ," I can't do that” and answer with a growth-mindset response “I can't do that yet!" Remember there is no such thing as failure and there is s only learning. If you don't fail occasionally you will never learn to change and grow.

A. A growth mindstet means no failure.

B. People need develop a fixed mindset.

C. A fixed mindset focuses more on process.

D. People should develop a growth mindest.

【2】Which judgment seems more encouraging?

A. You are clever.

B. You are skillful.

C. You have worked hard.

D. You arc great at your job.

【3】What do the growth-mindset persons most advocate?

A. Keeping on learning.

B. Viewing ability as failure.

C. Giving praise around ability.

D. Learning from the fixed mindset.

【4】What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A. Always stay in ihe same mindset

B. Think and act in different mindsets.

C. We can 't miss the chance of failure.

【題目】The American state of Colorado is considering a ban on smartphones for children younger than 13.

A Denver-based doctor - and father - is leading the effort. Tim Farnum is the founder of a group called ‘Parents Against Underage Smartphones.' His proposal would ban sales of smartphones to children under the age of 13. It would also ban sales to anyone who wishes to buy such a device for anyone younger than 13. The measure would also require sellers of smartphones to provide proof to the state government that they have asked buyers if the phone is for anyone under 13.

The measure now needs about 300,000 signatures in order to appear on Colorado's statewide ballot (投票權(quán))next year. If it makes the ballot and is approved by voters, Colorado would become the first state to have such a ban.

Tim Farnum said he decided to push for the measure after watching his own children struggle with the mental effects of always having a smartphone around. "They would get the phones andlockthemselves in the room and change who they were," he told The Coloradoan newspaper.

State Senator John Kefalas, a Democrat, said he understands the reasoning behind the proposed law. However, he told The Coloradoan that a child's smartphone usage is a "family matter" and not something the government should decide. "Ultimately, this comes down to parenting,” he said, “making sure their kids are not putting themselves at risk.”

Last year, the AAP (the American Academy of Pediatrics) releasedguidelinesfor media use by children. The group advised parents to limit time spent watching videos to no more than one hour a day of high-quality programming until age 6. After that, it said, parents should set reasonable time limits for their children and make sure electronic devices do not take time away from sleep or exercise.

1What’s NOT right about Tim Farnum’s proposal?

A. It will be passed by the state of Colorado next year

B. It needs 300,000 signatures to gain the ballot

C. It bans buying smartphones for children under 13.

D. It bans selling smartphones to children under 13.

2What’s the driving force of Tim Farnum’s proposal?

A. Other parents’ request

B. His own children’s addiction to Smartphones

C. Smartphones’ harm to children’s health

D. The guidelines released by the AAp.

3What’s the attitude of John Kefalas toward Tim Farnum’s proposal?

A. Positive B. Doubtful

C. Disapproving D. Unconcerned

4From the last paragraph, we can infer that______

A. children under 6 shouldn’t watch videos

B. parents are to blame for children’s media use

C. parents should control children’s media use

D. electronic devices won’t affect children’s sleep

In addition, some of us are lazy and don’t work hard on our lessons. So when taken exams, we sometimes cheat in order to get good results to make our parents and teachers pleased.

In my opinion, it was wrong to cheat in exams because it breaks the rules of the schools. Our students should be honesty and try to get good results by studying hard instead of cheating in exams. What’s more, we should improve our method of study and make well preparations for exams. With the saying goes, “Nothing is impossible for a willing heart.

【題目】For years we have been told that encouraging a child’s self-respect is important to his or her success in life. But child experts are now learning that too much praise can lead to the opposite effect. Praise-aholic kids who expect it at every turn may become teens who seek the same kind of approval from their friends when asked if they want to go in the backseat of the car.

The implication(含義) of saying “You are the prettiest girl in class,” or talking about the goals she scored but not her overall effort, is that you love her only when she looks the best, scores the highest, achieves the most. And this carries over to the classroom.

Social psychologist Carol Dweck, PHD, tested the effects of over-praise on 400 fifth graders while she was at Columbia University. She found that kids praised for “trying hard” did better on tests and were more likely to take on difficult assignments than those praised for being “smart”.

“Praising attributes(品質(zhì)) or abilities makes a false promise that success will come to you because you have that quality, and it devalues effort, so children are afraid to take on challenges,” says Dweck, now at Stanford University, “They figure they’d better quit while they’re ahead.”

1The underlined words “Praise-aholic kids” refer to kids who are ______.

A. tired of being praised B. worthy of being praised

C. very proud of being praised D. extremely fond of being praised

2The author quoted Dr.Dweck’s words in the last paragraph in order to make the article ______.

A. better-known B. better-organized

C. more persuasive D. more interesting

3We can infer from the passage that _______.

A. praise for efforts should be more encouraged

B. praise for results works better than praise for efforts

C. praising a child’s achievements benefits his or her success in life

D. praising a child’s abilities encourages him or her to take on challenges
