Email has brought the art of letter writing back to life, but some experts think the resulting spread of bad English does more harm than good.

Email is a form of communication that is changing, for the worse, the way we write and use language, say some communication researchers. It is also changing the way we interact and build relationship. These are a few of recently recognized features of email, say experts, that should cause individual and organizations to rethink the way they use email.

“Email has increased the spread of careless writing habits, ”says Naomi Baron, a professor of linguistics at American University. She says the poor spelling, grammar, punctuation and sentence structure of emails reflect a growing unconcern to the way we write.

Baron argues that we should not forgive and forget the poor writing often shown in emails. “ The more we use email and its tasteless writing, the more it becomes the normal way of writing,” the professor says.

Others say that despite its poor prose(文字), email has finished what several generations of English teachers couldn’t: it has made writing fashionable again.

“Email is a critical new communication technology,” says Ian Lancashire, a University of Toronto professor of English.“It fills the gap between spoken language and the formal methods of writing that existed before email. It is the purest form of written speech.”

Lancashire says email has the mysterious ability to get people who are scared by writing to get their thoughts flowing easily onto a blank screen. He says this is because of email’s close similarity to speech.“ It’s like a circle of four or five people around a campfire,” he says.

Still, he accepts that this new?found freedom to express themselves often gets people into trouble.“Almost everyday I get emails that apologies of previous emails,” he reports.

In the US, the number of emails sent in a day exceeds(超過) the number of letters mailed in a year. But more people are recognizing the content of a typical email message is not often exact.

5.The passages mainly shows us that .

A? people should stop using email to communicate

B? experts hold different opinions about email

C? Americans only use email to communicate

D? email makes people lose interest in English

6. In Lancashire’s opinion, email is a wonderful technology because_____.

A. it can be used all over the world

B. it is the fastest way to communicate

C. we can express ourselves in a free way

       D. we can save a lot of paper

7. Which of the following is NOT true about email?

A. It is changing the way of communication.

B. It is used more than letters in the US.

C. It helps us write better.

       D. It causes us to write more.

                                                                     Stop Spam!
When I first got an email account ten years ago, I received communications only from family, friends,
and colleagues. Now it seems that every time I check my email, I have an endless series of advertisements and other correspondence that do not interest me at all.If we want email to continue to be useful,we need
specific laws that make spamming(發(fā)送垃圾郵件) a crime.
If lawmakers do not do something soon to prohibit spam, the problem will certainly get much worse.
Computer programs allow spammers to send hundreds of millions of emails  almost instantly. As more
and more advertisers turn to spam to sell their products, individual (個(gè)人的) email boxes are often
flooded with spam emails.Would people continue to use email if they had to deal with an annoying amount of spam each time?
This problem is troubling for individuals and companies as well. Many spam emails contain computer
viruses that can shut down the entire network of a company.Companies rely on email for their employees
to communicate with each other.Spam frequently causes failures in their local communications networks,
and their employees are thus unable to communicate effectively.Such a situation results in a loss of
productivity and requires companies to repeatedly repair their networks. These computer problems raise
production costs of companies, which are, in the end, passed on to the consumer.
For these reasons,I believe that lawmakers need to legislate(立法) against spam.Spammers should be
fined, and perhaps sent to prison if they continue to disturb people.Email is a tool which helps people all
over the world to communicate conveniently, but spam is destroying this convenience.

閱讀理解。
It's interesting that technology often works as a servant for us, yet frequently we become a servant to
it. Email is a useful tool but many feel controlled by this new tool. The average business person is getting
about 80 emails per day and many feel that about 80%of the messages in their in box are of little or no value.
So, I have four suggestions to help you to become better at “Erasing Email”
1.get off the lists. The best way to deal with a problem is to never have it. If you are receiving a lot of
unwanted emails, ask to be removed from the various lists. This would include your inclusion in unwanted
lists.
     2. “unlisted address”. Just as you keep an unlisted telephone number that you share only with those
whom you want to have direct access to , you might want to get a separate email address only for the
important communications you wish to receive.
3.check it once or twice per day. Many I speak with are becoming chained to their email server,
monitoring incoming email continuously. Maybe this is because email creates its own sense of urgency, but
most of the communications are not all that urgent. I respond to them a couple of times per day.
     4. deal with it. As you open each email, do one of the following:
     a. if it requires a quick response, respond to it and delete it.
     b. if it requires a response but is not the best use of your time, try to find someone else to do it.
     c. if it is going to take any serious amount of time to respond, schedule it for action in your day planner
and then download the message, save it, or print it out for future action.
I personally receive about 250 emails per day and by practising the suggestions above, I can handle that
volume in about an hour, taking advantage of this fantastic tool but not being controlled by it to make sure
I'm doing more important tasks in my day.
1. if you get unwanted emails, the best you can do is to _____.
A. make a list of them
B. put them into unwanted lists
C. send them to a special address
D. ask to be deleted from different lists
2. For the important communications, the writer suggests that you ______.
A. have a direct access for them
B. have several email servers for them
C. get a separate email address for them
D. get an unlisted phone number for them
3. To avoid being chained by the coming emails, what you can do is to ______.
A. respond urgent ones only
B. reply to all of them at the same time
C. handle them a couple of times daily
D. keep replying to emails all day long
4. To deal with an email you get, you can do the following except ______.
A. responding right away if it's urgent
B. downloading every email before you reply
C. scheduling it for later reply if it takes much time
D. asking someone else to reply to it if it's not at your convenience
