In 1982, Steven Callahan was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank.He got into a life boat, but his supplies were   21 .His chances of surviving were small.  22  when three fishermen found him 76 days later, he was alive —much   23  than he was when he started, but alive.
His   24  of how he survived is fascinating. His cleverness —how he   25  to catch fish, how he evaporated(蒸發(fā)) sea water to   26  fresh water—is very interesting.
But the thing that   27  my eye was how he managed to keep himself going when all hope seemed lost, and there seemed no   28  in continuing the struggle. He was starved and 29  worn-out.Giving up would have seemed the only possible choice.
When people   30  these kinds of circumstances, they do something with their minds that gives them the courage to keep going. Many people in   31  desperate circumstances 32   in or go mad.Something the survivors do with their thoughts helps them find the courage to carry on   33  difficulties.
"I tell myself I can     34    it, “wrote Callahan in his book. -Compared to what others have been through,I'm fortunate. I tell myself these things over and over,    35 up courage...
I wrote that down after I read it. It  36   me as something important. And I've told myself the same thing when my own goals seemed    37 off or when my problems seemed too terrible. And every time I've said it, I have always come back to my   38    .
The truth is,our circumstances are only bad  39  to something better. But others have been through the much worse; that is, in comparison with what others have been through, you’re fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over again, and it will help you   40   through the rough
situations with a little more courage.

When I was 8, a gentleman came to my orphanage(孤兒院)and taught us how to do woodworking projects.
I remember my first project—a small table. I was so      of it that I looked upon it as if I had created a(an)     . It was absolutely beautiful and it had taken me six weeks to      it. I could hardly wait to give it to Mother Winters as a     . She was the head mistress of our orphanage, who was always      with us.
As the tables were not dry from the clear coating, the man told us to wait a few days before taking them to our dormitories. But I was just so      and happy that I couldn’t wait. I dashed out like a     , carrying my table, smiling from ear to ear.
When I reached the dormitory I placed the little table beside my bed. I was      it when Mother Winters entered. She walked over to the table. Running her hand      it, she noticed that it was still wet.
“Were you      to bring this home?” she asked.
“No, ma’am,” I      with my head down.
She ordered me to throw the table out and so I did. After she left, I immediately opened the door to get it back. There was      stuck all over. I brushed and cried, but it would not come off.
I hid the table in my closet and never      it. A year later while cleaning up, I gave the table to Mother Henderson, my houseparent(宿管員), thinking that she would      it away.
Thirty years later at a reunion, I      that Mother Henderson was living nearby, so I drove up to see her. We talked cheerfully for long. As I was about to leave, she asked me to come down to her      to get something important. I followed her      into a dark corner. She picked something up.      she turned around, I could see that she was holding a little table.
Mother Henderson kept the little table that I had given up for lost so long ago.
Today, I look at that table with bittersweet memories but full of      to Mother Henderson, who kept it for a young orphan who tried very hard to     .

After the interview, there would only be 3 who could enter the final round, which would later       one person to be employed. Everything seemed to go quite       and my son passed the first round and entered the final round in a week.
On the day of the final interview, my son and other two      arrived at the interview place on time,       the test. Unexpectedly, the interview was unbelievably      . The interviewer only said to them, “All of you are very super. Please go home and wait for our      . We will tell you the       in 3 days. Good luck to all of you!” On the morning of the third day, my son received a text from the company shortly after breakfast that he was not employed. We all felt very      .
In nightfall that day, my son suddenly told me       on the phone, “Dad, I have been employed!” Greatly surprised, I could not wait to ask him, “What’s the whole      ?” My son told me that he received another text saying that he was employed. Actually the first text sent to my son was also       of the test in the interview. Three men received the same text this morning and only my son’s       was “Thank you” while the others said “Goodbye”.
Only then did I know that my son’s “hope”       in that way. That is, when you feel disappointed, do not      to say “thank you” to the one who disappoints you. Saying “thank you” shows respect for others’ work and shows your grand      . Therefore, while under the same condition, you will get the upper hand in terms of       compared with others!

On a cold winter day, I waited in line to see my hero, Jack Canfield, the author of The Success Principles, who was going to deliver a speech on his new book.
During his talk, Jack   41  his wallet, pulled out a hundred-dollar bill, and said, ‘‘Who wants this?”   42  shot up in the audience; people leaned forward to see whom Jack would   43 . But I jumped up, ran up the   44  to the stage, and grabbed the bill. As I was launching myself in the air,   45 raced through my mind — was I about to be humiliated(羞辱) in front of 800 people? Would they   46  security guards and take me from the stage?    47  my desire for bold (大膽的)action was louder than any   48 voice. As I got the bill from his hand, he said, “That’s it! We can’t wait for the   49  to come to us. We must take    50   to create what we want!’’
After his talk, I   51  to formally meet Jack and boldly asked for his personal e-mail address. Over the next months, I sent him emails   52  my points of view and dreams with him. He kindly e-mailed back lots of encouragement. But my life got busy   53 other things. I stopped e-mailing Jack.
A year later, my dreams had worn away. I thought Jack would inspire me into action, like a giant arrow that would show me the way.
I e-mailed him, and then again — but got no   54 . As I sat down at my computer to 55  my e-mails, I  56  woke up. What was I doing? I was waiting! Now I remembered the crowd, most likely   57  that hundred-dollar bill, while they sat glued to their chairs.
Usually we all have a “Jack” for whom we wait — whether it’s a person, a place or a thing. We   58  believe the gifts of life are just around the corner, and that everything will come in a(n)   59  way. So we don’t try. We  60 . But as Wayne Gretzky said,“You’ll always miss 100% of the opportunities you don’t take!” So I stopped waiting and started my writing career.
Now what are you waiting for?

He   48  that maybe there were more private courts in the country than he   49  but he did not know of any others. Then he asked me   50  my brother lived in California. When I said Sacramento, he said that was a coincidence   51  his Chicago friend spent the summer in Sacramento last year and he lived next door to a   52  who had a tennis court in his backyard. I said I felt that really was a coincidence (巧合) because my next-door neighbour had gone to Sacramento last summer and had   53  the house next to my brother’s house. For a moment, we stared at each other, but we did not say anything.
“Would your friend’s name happen to be Roland Kirkwood?” I asked finally. He   54  and said, “Yes. Would your brother’s name happen to be Dr Rey Hunter?” It was my   55  to laugh. “Yes,” I replied.
