Writing a long book seemed to be too much for me.So, for a long time, I just wrote short articles.
One day, inspiration (靈感) for an article hit me and, as I started writing, paragraphs began flowing out
fast.It turned out to be too long to be an article.I thought it would not hurt to try selfpublishing a booklet (小冊(cè)子). The first printing of this 32page black and white booklet sold out within a week. Here is
something that I have learned through my experience.
    1. Start small.
Don't try to have a 400page work as your first publication (出版物). I suggest you publish a booklet
under 50 pages to launch your career as an author.
    2. Ask for advice.
If you know some people who have published something, ask them for advice and help. You will gain
useful information from them and save yourself many problems.
   3. ____________________
When you put your heart into something only to hear "We're not interested", you may get hurt. But you
must remind yourself that this is quite common.Every "yes" you receive comes after at least five "noes",
especially at the beginning. You need to revise (校訂) your book many times to reduce the chances of
being turned down.
   4. The more you market, the more you sell.
You can publish an excellent book. But if no people know about it, you cannot expect many buyers.
Send out an email to friends, family and business partners, telling them your book's publication date.Ask
them to help sell your book.Do not be afraid to try novel ideas.
1. We learn that before selfpublishing his first booklet, the writer most probably________.
A. hoped that he would write some famous long stories
B. had nothing published in newspapers
C. was not happy with what he had written
D. thought it difficult to finish a long book
2. What does the underlined word "launch" in Point 1 here mean?
A. Begin.
B. Develop.
C. Lead.
D. Describe.
3. What's the best title for Point 3?
A. No one will like what you wrote at first.
B. You will get hurt by what you wrote at first.
C. Prepare for a "yes" rather than a "no".
D. Be prepared to deal with "noes"
4. According to the passage, if you want to have more copies of your book sold, you should________.
A. advertise your book in newspapers
B. try to make more people know your book
C. ask your business partners to buy your book
D. write something that people are interested in
5. About selfpublishing a book, the writer would most probably agree that________.
A. one usually makes no money out of selfpublishing a book
B. one should never selfpublish a book longer than 400 pages
C. selfpublishing a book is impossible for most people
D. asking advice from people who have published a book is helpful

Host family accommodation, or living with host families, remains popular among language travel students
for its advantages. These days, host families are trying to offer more in terms of quality, for they still have
something to worry about.
Host family accommodation is often seen as the number-one choice for its advantages in language study,
cultural communication and cost of living. Staying alongside host families enables students to get enough
practice for the short time of their studying so that their language acquisition is likely to become faster. Living
in host families also has the advantage for students of being able to spend a lot of time communicating with
their "host parents", and get to know the local way of life, people and culture. Another advantage is that host
family accommodation can sometimes be the least expensive. It attracts students for it ensures them a family
type of living at a low cost.
The advantages, however, have not prevented host families form worrying. On one hand, some host
families are losing their unique selling point. The problem is that the majority of hosts in big cites, now
generally single and young, have less times available for students but the selling point for host family
accommodation is communication practice. One the other hand, students' expectations have risen. They are
becoming more demanding and asking for more than ever from their accommodation, as they come mainly
from high socio-economic groups in their own countries.
To get out of the difficult situation, host families are now making efforts to improve the quality of
service. They are trying to making living conditions better, including broadband Internet service, private
bathroom, and access to plenty of hot water for long showers. They are also providing students with
structured family activities.
It is believed that host family accommodation will keep the popularity vote with language travel students.

閱讀理解.
The whole morning we just checked our own things. We were looking for items to give
away. We thought of blankets, food and clothing. Our aim was not to find things we no
longer wanted, but things we use every day and would be useful to others.
We made up boxes with the things and added some small toys. Inside the boxes a simple
letter was placed, reading:
"Please take these items and know that your life is important. Times are difficult but
they will pass. We share what we have, believing it will matter. Use the blanket to stay warm.
Be safe and know that the human spirit can overcome anything. Don't hold your head down.
Someday please do the same when you can. How you do it and when, your heart will tell you.
This kind act was not because the phone rang or for any reason. It was simply because
it was the right time to do. We have often seen homeless people at the park where we left
the belongings. The city would say that it isn't a problem but I see the lives walking to and
from it.
I noticed that my wife had put her favorite green coat into one of the boxes. I asked if
she was sure about it and she simply replied that it had a hood (風(fēng)帽). She liked the coat
but knew the hood could shelter (遮擋)someone from the rain.
We don't know where these gifts of compassion(同情)will go. We never go back and
see what happens. It's unimportant. The right things will find the right people and that is all
that counts. On the way my wife started to cry. When I asked why, she said because some
things felt so right.

2. The couple placed the letter inside the box mainly to_______.
A. help the poor go through the difficulties
B. let the poor know who gave away the things

3. The couple liked this kind act because _______.
A. they thought it was the right thing to do
B. they had a good habit of saving things
C. they often received telephone calls for help
