I often read of incidents of misunderstanding or conflict. I'm left      . Why do these people create mistrust and problems, especially with those from other     ?
I was growing up in Kuala Lumpur in the early 1960s,       children from different races and religions played and studied      in harmony. At that time my family lived a stone's       from Ismail's. And no one was bothered that Ismail was a Malay Muslim and I was an Indian Hindu—we just       our differences. Perhaps, our elders had not filled our heads with unnecessary advice, well      or otherwise.
We were nine when we became friends. During the school holidays, we 'd     the countryside on our bicycles, hoping to       the unexpected. At times Ismail would accompany my family as we made a rare shopping trip to town. We would be glad of his      .
When I was twelve, my family moved to Johor. Ismail's family later returned to their village, and I       touch with him. One spring afternoon in 1983, I stopped a taxi in Kuala Lumpur. I       my destination. The driver acknowledged my        but did not move off. Instead, he looked        at me. “Raddar?" he said, using my childhood nickname (綽號).I was astonished at being so       addressed (稱呼).Unexpectedly! It was Ismail! Even after two       we still recognized each other. Grasping his shoulder, I felt a true affection, something      to describe.
If we can allow our children to be      without prejudice, they'll build friendships with people, regardless of race or religion, who will be      their side through thick and thin. On such friendships are societies built and       we can truly be, as William Shakespeare once wrote, “We happy few. We band of brothers".

When I was a law professor, a student reported that I made an error in grading his exam by giving him too many points. He was         and after thanking him for his honesty, I changed the          in my records. His beaming (歡笑的) face turned to         “You’re lowering my grade?” he said angrily. “I would never have come in          ……”
He didn’t finish the          but it was obvious that his display of honesty was false. He thought he’d have it all—praise and the          grade.
Several colleagues thought I should have let the higher grade stand        all I’d accomplished was to discourage him from being         in the future. And every time I tell this         , some people agree with this remark.
But I can’t see how I could give good          for worsening my mistake in grading by undermining (損害) the honesty of all my grades by failing to          an error. The grade itself would be a dishonest reflection of his          and it would have been         to other students. How could I possibly give a          a gift of an unearned grade?
I know voluntarily reporting an error in one’s favor is         , but, like          extra change, it’s the         thing to do. People with real honesty, hate to give up benefits as mush as anyone else. The difference is that for them a good conscience and reputation is reward enough to give reason for the cost of doing the right thing.
Perhaps         the student’s grade did discourage him from being honest in the future, but bribing (賄賂) him to be honest so that he does the right thing when it’s cost-free would have         him even more. The duty to be honest is         right and wrong, not risks and rewards.

Standing on the top of a church tower not far from our home in Rome, Father said to me, "Look down, Elsa." I gathered all my         and looked down. I saw the crisscross(十字形)of twisting, turning streets         to the square in the centre of the village.
“See, my dear,” Father said gently. "There is more than one way to the square. Life is like that. If you can’t get where you want to go by one road, try      ."
Now I understood why I was there. Earlier that day I had begged my mother to do something about the       lunches that were served at school. But she       because she could not believe the lunches were so bad.
When I turned to Father for help, he would not      . Instead, he brought me to this high tower to give me a lesson. By the time we reached home, I had a(n)      .
At school the next day, I secretly       my lunch soup into a bottle and brought it home. Then I       the cook into serving it to Mother at dinner. The plan worked      . She swallowed one spoonful and sputtered(噴濺), "The cook must have gone mad!" Quickly I told her what I had done, and Mother stated firmly that she would       the matter of lunches at school the next day!
In the years that followed I often remembered the      Father taught me. I knew where I wanted to go in life — to be a fashion designer. And on the way to my first small success I found the road      .
I was busy getting ready to         my winter fashions. Then just 13 days before the presentation the sewing girls were called out on strike. I felt so depressed that I was         that we would have to cancel the presentation         show the clothes unfinished. Then it dawned on me. Why not show the clothes unfinished?
We worked hurriedly and the showing took place as       . Some coats had no sleeves; others had only one. Many of our clothes were only         made of heavy cotton cloth. But on these we pinned sketches and pieces of material. In this way we were able to show what colors and textures the clothes would have when they were finished. It was our        showing that caught the attention of the public, and         for the clothes poured in.
Father’s wise words had guided me once again. There is more than one way to the square always.
