Every Chinese-language textbook starts out with the standard phrases for greeting people; but as an American, I always found myself 1 to speak freely when it came to seeing guests off at the door. Just a good-bye would not do, yet that was all I had ever learned from the 2 books. So I would smile and nod, bowing like a Japanese and searching madly for words that would 3 over the visitor's leaving and make them feel they-would be 4 to come again. In my unease, I often hid behind the skirts of my Chinese husband's kindness.

Then finally, listening to others, I began to pick up the phrases that 5 relationships and sent people off not only successfully but also skillfully.

6 for the Chinese includes a lot of necessary habitual practice. Although as a 7 , I'm not expected to observe or even know all the rules, I've had to learn the expressions of politeness and 8 at a leaving-taking.

The Chinese feel they 9 see a guest off to the farthest possible point-down the flight of stairs to the street below or perhaps all the way to the 10 bus stop. I've sometimes waited half an hour or more for my husband to return from seeing a guest off, 11 he's gone to the bus stop and waited for the 12 bus to arrive.

That's very well, but when I'm the guest being seen off, my protests are always 13 . My hostess or host, or both, insists on 14 me down the stairs and well on

my way, with my repeating the “Don't 15 to see me off at the every landing”. If I try to go fast to 16 them from following, they are simply out to the discomfort of having to run after me. Better to accept the inevitable(不可避免的).

Besides, that's going against Chinese 17 , because haste(doing things quickly) is to be avoided. What do you say when you 18 someone? Not “farewell or Godspeed(祝福)”, 19 “Go slowly”. To the Chinese it means “Take care” or “Watch your 20 ”, or some such caution(謹慎), but translated literally(字面意思) it means “Go slowly.”

Wings of Angel

I used to hate myself because I wasn’t “normal”. Everyone else could play on the monkey bars and ride on a bicycle, but not   21  . I had a severe spinal cord disorder (脊髓病) and I knew I would always be much   22   than others.

I hated going to school and I hated people   23   at me. I hated seeing others smiling broadly and standing   24   and tall. And most of all, I hated looking in the   25   and seeing an ugly hunchback (駝背).

My friends found me   26   because I didn’t let others get close to me. I thought I was going to go on like this for the rest of my life   27   Angela appeared.

That afternoon, I was sitting by myself in a corner of the school — a spot where no one would   28   me. That’s when I first heard her voice.

“Hi. Can I sit down?”

I raised my head and there she was, with an irresistible smile on her round face.

“What are you looking at?” she asked.

“Ants.”

“What are they doing?”

“No   29  .”

“I bet they’re playing games and making friends. Don’t you think so?”

That was how our   30   started and it didn’t stop. We talked about everything under the sun—the ants, the clouds, my little niche (處境) — until it was sunset.

Then suddenly, she saw my   31  . She just stared.

My heart   32  . What I feared most had happened and I knew for sure she would   33   me now.

She stood up, pointed at my back and said, “I know   34   your back is hunched.”

I closed my eyes like a criminal waiting to be   35  . I begged in my heart for her to   36  , but she just kept on going. “I know what you’ve got in there. Do you?”

“No,” I answered   37  .

She bent and whispered in my ears.

“Your back is hunched because you’ve got a pair of wings from the angels.”

I was   38  . I looked into her eyes and her   39   touched my heart. From that day on, I started to learn to   40   myself because I have the wings of an angel and a kind-hearted friend.

I remember my dad teaching me the power of language at a very young age.

One fairly interesting event happened when I was eight. As a kid, I was always climbing trees, poles, and __31__ around upside down from the rafters (房梁) of our house. So, it __32__ to no surprise for my dad to __33__ me at the top of a 30-foot tree swinging back and forth. Without realizing the tree could break or I could get __34__, I just thought it was__35__ to be up so high.

My cousin, Tammy, was in the same tree. She was hanging on the first big __36__ about ten feet below me. Tammy’s mother also __37__ us at the exact time my dad did. About that time a huge gust of wind came over the tree and I could feel the tree begin to sway. I remembered my dad’s __38__ over the wind yelling, “Bart, __39__ on tightly.” So I did.

The next thing I know, I heard Tammy __40__ at the top of her lungs, __41__ flat on the ground. She had fallen out of the tree.

I came down the tree to __42__. My dad later told me why Tammy fell and I didn’t. __43__, when Tammy’s mother felt the wind, she yelled out, “Tammy, don’t __44__!” And Tammy did do that.

My dad then __45__ to me that the mind has a very __46__ time dealing with a negative image. In order to deal with the __47__ of not falling, Tammy’s brain had to first imagine falling, and then tell the brain not to do what it just imagined. However, my eight-year-old brain __48__ had an internal image of hanging on tightly.

This “Self-Talk” is especially useful when you are __49__ to break a habit or set a goal. You can’t imagine not doing something in your mind. The only way to accomplish it is to find a word for what you want to do.

I’m now a pretty good football player, because all my internal dialogue is __50__ and encourages me to win. All this I owe to my dad.
