The oldest and hardest cow beef may be made as tender and tasty as young and choice met. ”This declaration was made by the French physicist Denis Papin in book published in 1681, which described his “New Digester” or pressure cooker.  It was a cast iron pot with an air-tight lid, which allowed liquids to boil at a higher temperature than usual, and so it cooked food in a quarter of the time.  The food was cooked by pressurized steam being forced through it at about 121℃.  All pressure cookers were made of cast iron until 1905,  when the first aluminum model was made in America. In 1938, Alfred Vischer, a man from Chicago, U. S. A., designed a simple interlocking pan and lid, and an improved pressure-tight seal(密封)—a replaceable rubber sealing ring. We typically associate the word “science” with a person in a white coat doing experiments in a laboratory. Ideally, experiments should play as big a role in the human sciences as they do in the natural sciences; but in practice this is not usually the case. The are at least three reasons for this.
1.Human scientists are often trying to make sense of complex real world situations in which it is simply impossible to run controlled experiment.
2.The artificiality of some of the experiments that can be conducted may make the behavior of the participants abnormal.
3.There are moral reasons for not conducting experiments that have a negative effect on the people who participate in them.
Faced with the above difficulties, what are human scientists to do? One solution is to wait for nature to provide the appropriate experimental conditions. We can, for example, learn something about how a normal brain functions by looking at people who have suffered brain damage; and we can gain some understanding into the roles played by genes and the environment by studying twins, who have been separated at birth and brought up in different families. In the case of economics, economic history can provide us with a bank of-admittedly not very well-controlled-experimental data.
However, human scientists do not just sit around waiting for natural experiments to arise. They also think of some experiments of their own. Suppose you want to know how a baby sees the world. We cannot, of course, ask the baby since it has not yet learnt to speak. So it might seem that all we can do is guess. People usually won’t change their mind until it was found out that babies tend to stare at surprising things longer than at unsurprising ones. This key understanding was like opening a window on to the developing mind. There was now a way of testing babies’ expectations and getting some idea of how they are six months old, babies can already do the following things: figuring out that objects consist of parts that move together being aware of the difference between living and non-living things and even doing simple arithmetic work.
60.What is true about the natural sciences and the human sciences according to this passage?
A.Both human scientists and natural scientists can run controlled experiments.
B.Experiments done by human scientists and natural scientists are artificial.
C.Both human and natural science experiments should be of the same importance.
D.It’s not moral to conduct human science experiments.
61.What do we know about human scientists from this passage?
A.They are white coat scientists.
B.They have more experimental sources than natural scientists.
C.They conduct experiments passively.
D.They face more difficulties in carrying out their research.
62.Which of the following experiments belongs to human science experiment?
A.Vinegar Volcano Vinegar and baking soda make. for a fun and easy science experiment. Try creating a vinegar volcano.
B.Taste Without Smell Put your senses to the test with this simple experiment that shows the
importance of your sense of smell.
C.Lung Function Observe your breath and confirm your lung volume by completing this experiment.
D.Make a Rainbow Use sunlight and water to make your own rainbow with this cool experiment

63.What does the author tell us in this passage?
A.ABCs about the science experiment.

C.Some differences between the human sciences and the natural sciences.
D.The similarity of the natural sciences and the human sciences.

When we talk about intelligence, we do not mean the ability to get good scores on certain kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school subjects. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new or upsetting situation. If we want to test intelligence, we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do.
For instance, when in a new situation, an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him. He tries to find out all he can, and then he acts immediately and tried to do something about it. He probably isn’t sure how it will all work out, but at least he tries. And if he cannot make things work out right, he doesn’t feel ashamed that he failed, he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook on life, a special feeling about life, and how he fits into it.
If you look at children, you’ll see a great difference in what we call “bright” children and “not bright” children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amounts of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life, he tries to get in touch with everything around him. But the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream world: he seems to have a walk between him and life in general.
61. According to the passage, intelligence is the ability to ________________ .
A. get high scores in some tests                         B. do well in school subjects
C. deal with life                                              D. know what to do
62. In a new situation, an intelligent person _______________ .
knows more about what might happen to him
is sure of the result he will get
is ready to face and fit himself in the situation
cares more about himself
63. If an intelligent person failed, he would  ___________ .
try not to feel ashamed                              B. learn from his experiences
C.  try to find all he could                            D. make sure what result he would get
64. The difference between bright children and non-bright children lies in _________ .
A. their attitude towards life                                    B. the degree of cleverness
C. the amounts of knowledge about the world     D. their way of thinking

Sandeep Mukerji was on his first visit to Thailand but would leave the “Land of Smiles” with a frown and an empty pocket.
A stone’s throw from the Grand Palace in Bangkok, the 26-year-old Canadian ran into a monk in a robe. The monk told him that the attraction he was hoping to visit had been closed.
The monk then introduced Mukerji to a jewellery store instead. On the way there, three different people told him that it was the last day of a once-a-year, tax-free jewellery promotion to encourage tourism.
They said that tourists can make a lot of money by buying gems(寶石)in Thailand and selling them once at home.
Two hours later, Mukerji had spent US $ 1, 250 on a set of almost worthless jewellery in the jewellery store.
“The whole process took me by surprise. They take advantage of your greed,” he said.
In fact, Mukerji is just one of a huge number of tourists who are cheated by the promise of making a fortune. The scam(詭計(jì))brings Thailand more than US $ 10 million each year.
Although tourist police stations have displayed posters to warn of the scam, many fresh-faced tourists still fall prey to the trick.
The police say they receive 5~10 complaints a day. Many more may not realize they have been cheated until they go back home.
That authorities say that the jewellery scam is harmful to Thailand’s image, but getting rid of the cheats is hard.
Sanit Miphan, head of the police, said the scam has been running for about 15 years but not one jewellery shop owner has been arrested.
The shops usually open for two weeks and then close. They reopen and register under a new name. What’s more, overcharging(要價(jià)過(guò)高)itself is not breaking the law.
Yet, to keep the tourism business alive, the police said they would take action against any shop receiving more than 10 complaints.
73. Sandeep Mukerji was cheated probably because of all the following EXCEPT that_______.
A. he was young
B. he believed that the monk wouldn’t cheat others
C. he had more or less the wish to try his fortune
D. the cheat scam was too skillful to be found out
74. How many people cheated Sandeen Mukerji?
A. Two        B. Three       C. Four          D. Five
75. Suppose everyone who was cheated lost as much as Mukerji did, how many visitors to Bankok would be cheated each year?
A. About 6, 000   B. About 8, 000   C. About 10, 000.    D. About12, 000.
76. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Thai tourist police are carrying out their task very efficiently.
B. The management of Thai tourist market is very strict.
C. Any shop receiving complaints will be punished as seriously as possible.
D. It is hard for the police to crack down(制裁) the cheats efficiently partly because many cheats’ deeds seem not to break the law.

It might have been a really bad stressful day, feeling trapped inside by the cold and snow which surrounded us. My husband was the first to shift his consciousness. He dressed accordingly and announced that he was going outside to build a giant snowman.
At first he stood alone, piling massive amounts of snow. Soon after a neighbor joined in my husband’s quest to embrace the opportunity the winter presented. Maintaining less than desirable attitudes, we reluctantly put on our snow gear(用具) and headed outside. It wasn’t long before we were smiling and enjoying the abundance of snow that Mother Nature had provided. Others came to our yard one by one to give a hand in the making of our giant snowman.
In the end we all stood back and marveled at what we had created. He was eleven feet high, twenty-five feet around at the base and decorated with many household items supplied by various families. There he stood, our glorious, gigantic (巨人般的) snowman.
People drove by and smiled. Some even stopped to enjoy his existence. The spirit that went into creating him seemed to catch on and we all enjoyed it while the cold temperatures allowed.
With the passing of time, the spring made its way back into our yard and the snowman changed form considerably. In a final effort to save what we created for just a little bit longer somebody stopped by and changed the snowman’s remains to look like a rabbit.
As I prepared for the start of another week, I decided to check my email before going to bed. I found a curious message that contained the subject line: enjoy the snowman. I decided to read the message even though I did not recognize who sent it. The words it contained melted my heart.
The email said: … your neighbor looks on in disbelief! I am sure you people are enjoying the sounds and smells, along with sights of spring. The energy displayed in Mr. Snowman or Ms, is filled with vigor and joyous energy. You and your family keep it up, as this is what the world needs now. Love sweet love. More power to you and your loved ones, keep sharing with the world around.
Perhaps it was more than snowman we built that day. I’d like to agree that it was. The message seems clear. Our circumstances will turn out to be what we make of them. The possibilities are endless and the choice is ours.
60. How did the author plan to spend that cold day at first?
A. By having a busy day.      B. By staying at home. C. By building a snowman.   D. By visiting neighbors.
61. The reason for her husband to make a snowman was that ________.
A. he had to please his neighbors                       B. he was better at it than others
C. he wanted to cheer himself up                       D. he must get the last chance before spring
62. From the passage we can know that the snowman_______.
A. was built only by the author’s family            B. was surprisingly big in size
C. made people more forgiving                   D. made building snowman popular

Upon waking up, Jim found himself lying on a stretch of sandy shore with his face half-buried in the sand.  He found, that his clothes had been almost torn apart.  His arms ached and his body was heavy like stone.  Before he could stand up, he was brought to his knees due to exhaustion.  As he lay on the sand, he began to study the environment for signs of human activities.  But there was nothing except for a few trees and some stones within eyesight.
He remembered how, a few hours before, he had still been struggling for survival in the vast South China Sea.  The boat that had carried his friends and him out to sea for a fun fishing trip had run into a terrible storm.  James, who was the captain of the boat, and had been at the wheel, lost control of the boat.  The boat moved from side to side in the storm.  Suddenly, it hit a sharp object, most probably a rock from the sea and was wrecked.
Jim could not remember how he had managed to drift onto land.  His friends were not in sight.  He was saddened by the fact that they might have all drowned.  Then he suddenly saw a thin column of smoke on the far side of a hill.  “Could it be a house?”  Jim asked himself.  Even if it wasn’t, it gave him some fresh hope of surviving the ordeal that he was going through.  He struggled on towards the place from where the smoke was rising.
Finally, he found himself at the top of the hill.  He saw a little green valley dotted with a few huts and trees in the sun.  His eyes were not playing tricks on him.  There was a village located at the bottom of the valley.  The sight gave him renewed hope.  He began to run toward the village with his last ounce of energy.
