Sport is very popular in England. In other words lots of English people like the idea of sport. A lot watch sport on TV. But the number who take part in(參加)sport is quite small. On the whole English people prefer to be fat rather than thin.
The most popular sport in England is football. Football is played on Saturday afternoon in most towns and the supporters(球迷)of a certain team will travel from one end of the country to the other to see their team play. There are four divisions(級別)of the football league. Not surprisingly the best teams are in the first division. But the best supporters are often in the fourth division. You have to be a good supporter to watch the fourth division football!
Many other sports are also played in England, such as golf, in which you try to knock a ball into a hole; basketball, in which you try to got a ball through a net(籃筐); tennis, in which you try to hit a ball so that your opponent(對手)can not hit it. As you see, if the ball had not been invented, there would have been no sport.
Actually(其實), that is not quite true. Athletics(田徑)isn’t played with a ball; nor horseracing(賽馬). Perhaps that is why they are not so popular as football!

The price of coffee beans hits a 12 – year high today. I thought there might
be some kind of coffee – market story, like we saw with cocoa earlier this summer.
But the main driver of coffee prices right now is simpler: Colombia has had
a few years of weak coffee harvests because of too much rain, which has reduced
the global supply. And coffee drinkers keep buying coffee, even as prices rise, in
other words, demand is unchanged.
The higher price of beans – up about 40 percent since March – means higher prices for the coffee you buy by the pound. But it probably won’t affect the coffee you buy by the cup.
Smuckers, which sells Folgers and Millstone coffees, recently said it was raising its prices because of the higher cost of beans. Starbucks, however, said it would absorb the higher cost of beans without raising prices.
“You see it much more in the grocery store because the raw materials are a big factor of cost,” Jose Sette of the International Coffee Organization told me. “In a coffee shop, your big expenses are rent and labor.”
While real – world supply and demand is the big driver of the price of beans, there may be some speculative action in coffee business in the future.
But futures (期貨) of the high – grade Arabica beans are traded in the US, where regulations prevent speculators (投機商) from controlling the market, hoping such things won’t happen just as in London summer market. That suggests that prices should fall when supply improves – which may happen next year.
Some experts say that farmers in third world countries won’t actually benefit from higher prices in this case. When the price difference is due to supply and demand, the profit of the seller usually doesn’t go up.
小題1:Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Why coffee is getting more expensive?
B.How farmer benefits from the high price?
C.Whether the US will control the coffee market?
D.What has caused the reduction of coffee?
小題2:From the second paragraph we can infer that _______________________.
A.Colombia is the coffee trading center of the world
B.Colombia coffee output contains a final share of the world
C.People need more and more coffee
D.Coffee sales will be getting less and less
小題3:In this summer’s coffee bean market, ____________________________.
A.the US made more rules about coffee prices
B.speculators once held the coffee bean market in London
C.coffee bean trading was seriously disorganized
D.coffee bean prices were very low in the US
小題4:Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A.The price difference determines the profit of the seller.
B.Smuckers is a famous coffee manufacturer.
C.Real – world supply and demand decides the prices.
D.Coffee prices will become much higher next year.

In his 1930 essay “Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren ”, John Keynes, a famous economist, wrote that human needs fall into two classes: absolute needs ,which are independent of what others have , and relative needs ,which make us feel superior to our fellows. He thought that although relative needs may indeed be insatiable (無止境的) , this is not true of absolute needs.
Keynes was surely correct that only a small part of total spending is decided by the desire for superiority. He was greatly mistaken, however, in seeing this desire as the only source of insatiable demands.
Decisions to spend are also driven by ideas of quality which can influence the demands for almost all goods, including even basic goods like food. When a couple goes out for an anniversary dinner, for example, the thought of feeling superior to others probably never comes to them. Their goal is to share a special meal that stands out from other meals.
There are no obvious limits to the escalation of demand for quality. For example, Porsche, a famous car producer, has a model which was considered perhaps the best sport car on the market Priced at over $120,000, it handles perfectly well and has great speed acceleration. But in 2004, the producer introduced some changes which made the model slightly better in handling and acceleration. People who really care about cars find these small improvements exciting. To get them, however, they must pay almost four times the price.
By placing the desire to be superior to others at the heart of his description of insatiable demands, Keynes actually reduced such demands. However, the desire for higher quality has no natural limits.
小題1:According to the passage, John Keynes believed that_______.
A.desire is the root of both absolute and relative needs
B.absolute needs come from our sense of superiority
C.relative needs alone lead to insatiable demands
D.absolute needs are stronger than relative needs
小題2:What do we know about the couple in Paragraph 3?
A.They want to show their superiority.
B.They find specialty important to meals.
C.Their demands for food are not easily satisfied.
D.Their choice of dinner is
小題3:What does the underlined word “escalation” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Understanding.B.IncreaseC.DifferenceD.Study
小題4:The author of the passage argues that ______.
A.absolute needs have no limits
B.demands for quality are not insatiable
C.human desires influence ideas of quality
D.relative needs decide most of our spending

Attention to detail is something everyone can and should do — especially in tight job market. Bob Crossley, a human-resources expert notices this in the job applications that come across his desk every day. “It’s amazing how many candidates cross out themselves,” he says.
“Resumes (簡歷)arrive with faults. Some candidates don’t bother to spell the company’s name correctly. Once I see a mistake, I cross out the candidates,” Crossley concludes. “If they cannot take care of these details, why should we trust them with a job?”
Can we pay too much attention to details? Perfectionists struggle over little things at the cost of something larger they work toward. “To keep from losing the forest for the trees,” says Charles Garfield, the professor at the University of California, San Francisco, “We must constantly ask ourselves how the details we’re working on fit into the larger picture. If they don’t, we should drop them and move to something else.”
Garfield compares this process to his work as a computer scientist at NASA. “The Apollo II moon launch was slightly off course 90 percent of the time,” says Garfield. “But a successful landing was still likely because we knew the exact position of our goal. This allowed us to make adjustments as necessary.” Knowing where to go helps us judge the importance of every task we undertake.
Too often we believe what accounts for others’ success is some special secret or a lucky break. But rarely is success so mysterious. Again and again, we see that by doing little things within our grasp well, large rewards follow.
小題1:According to the passage, some job applicants were rejected because       .
A.they failed to present resumes that are free of mistakes
B.they failed to give a detailed description of their background
C.they crossed out their names from the applicants list themselves
D.their handwriting on the resume was hard to recognize
小題2:The underlined word “cross out” in the first paragraph probably means ______.
A.neglectB.recommendC.wipeD.introduce
小題3:The third paragraph is intended to state that       .
A.trees are as important as forests
B.we should pay much attention to details
C.we shouldn’t go too far in details to lose our goals
D.perfectionists are capable of achieving perfect results
小題4:The example of Apollo II moon launch is given to show that       .
A.minor mistakes can be ignored
B.failure is the mother of success
C.adjustments are the key to the successful completion of any work
D.keeping one’s goal in mind helps decide which details can be overlooked

Anyone for kimchi(韓國泡菜)? Around 2,000 women made the traditional dish last week in Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea(ROK).

Kimchi traditionally has a rosy color. Korea.net says: “The color red wards off (避開) evil spirits. The color represents the spirit of the Korean people and kimchi is more than just a food. It’s a culture.”
A meal without kimchi is unthinkable. So what is kimchi?
Joan Raymond, food writer for US website health.com, writes: “It’s a reddish, fermented (發(fā)酵的) cabbage dish , made with a mix of garlic salt, vinegar, chili peppers and other spices.
It is served at every meal, either along with or mixed with rice and noodles. It is part of a high-fiber, low fat diet, which has kept obesity(肥胖) at bay.”
Kimchi is used in everything from soups to pancakes and as a topping (配料) on pizza and burgers.
Health.com named kimchi in its list of the world’s top five healthiest foods as it is rich in vitamins, aids digestion and may even reduce the risk of cancer.

A new report says only about half of all students in the main school systems of America’s largest cities finish high school. The report notes higher rates of graduation — over 70% —in areas surrounding the cities. Researchers studied high school graduation rates from the 2003, 2004 school year. They also identified the nation’s fifty largest cities. The largest, New York City, had a population of more than eight million. The smallest city was Wichita, Kansas. It had about three hundred and sixty thousand people.
Researchers used a system of measurement called the cumulative promotion index to find graduation rates. School officials in many of the cities studied said the resulting numbers were too low. That is because different areas use different methods to find graduation rates. Critics say many methods do not give a true picture of the number of students who leave high school before finishing.
Other studies have put the national graduation rate at about 70%. But experts agree that too many students are not completing high school. They estimate the number at more than one million each year. The report was prepared for America’s Promise Alliance. The private group aims to help children receive services they need to succeed.
General Colin Powell was chairman of America’s Promise Alliance when it was formed in 1997. He attended the press conference Tuesday where the report was released. He said studies have shown that the US must do more to educate the leaders and work force of the future.
Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings also spoke. She said the government will propose that states use the same methods when reporting graduation rates. Alliance officials also announced the start of a nationwide campaign to improve graduation rates. It is to include a series of meetings to be held in every state over the next two years. The meetings will bring together elected leaders, business owners, students, parents and education officials. They will develop plans to increase the number of Americans who finish high school.
小題1:The author wants to tell us ___________.
A.too many Americans do not finish high school
B.different methods to find graduation rates
C.services American children need to receive
D.the increase of the number of Americans who finish their high school
小題2:From Paragraph 1 we can infer that __________.
A.there are 8,360,000 people in the US’ fifty largest cities
B.Wichita in Kansas is the smallest city in the US
C.50% of the people in the US don’t finish their high school education
D.high school graduation rates in or near the biggest cities are higher
小題3: The underlined word “picture” probably can be replaced by “_______”.
A.situationB.sceneC.imageD.mood
小題4:From the last paragraph, we can draw a conclusion that _______-.
A.secretary of Education Margaret Spellings didn’t believe that number from the report
B.the government will stop using the cumulative promotion index to find graduation rates
C.secretary of Education Margaret Spellings announced the start of a nationwide campaign to improve graduation rates
D.the low graduation rates should be paid attention to by the government and the society
