The legal age for drinking alcohol in the United States is twenty-one. Underage drinking is a crime but also a common part of college social life. This week in our Foreign Student Series, we look at alcohol rules at American colleges and universities. These rules differ from school to school, as do measures. But many schools have been moving to strengthen their rules.
The United States has more than 17000,000 students in higher education. Each year, 1700 of them die from alcohol-related road crashes and other injuries. 600,000 more are injured while under the influence of alcohol. And almost 700,000 are attacked by another drunken.
One behavior that college officials are trying to prevent is too much drinking. Some researchers have found that students who think binge drinking is normal often think extremely how much other students really drink. A person can die of alcohol poisoning. At Oklahoma University, a nineteen-year-old student died from drinking heavily at a party in 2005
Now alcohol is banned from all sorority houses and university housing. Student organizations can serve alcohol at events but only on Friday and Saturday nights. Other new requirements include an alcohol education program that first-year students take online.
The rules govern behavior on campus (校園) and off. With a first violation(違犯), students pay seventy-five dollars and their parents are told. They must also take an alcohol education class. For a second "strike," they have to pay one hundred fifty dollars. A third strike means that they have to be suspended school forwww..com at least one semester.
Since 2005, 363 students have had a first strike. 30 have had a second strike -- and only one hasn’t allowed to go to school for one semester. The president at Oklahoma tells us the aim is not just to punish but to change behavior and the culture at the university.
The first paragraph mainly tells us that_________.
A. the legal age at the lowest for drinking alcohol is 21
B. many colleges consider drinking alcohol to be a crime
C. drinking alcohol is a necessary and popular campus culture
D. American colleges and universities have their own alcohol rules
Every year the number of the students who die or are injured because of alcohol in the USA added up to about _______.
A. 17000,000 B. 1,301,700 C. 601,700 D. 1300,000
If a student has a third strike, he/she should________.
A. have to stop going to school for a time B .be removed to another school
C. be locked at home for a period D. be forced to leave school forever
Which of the following statements is supported by the passage ?
A. College students are not allowed to drink alcohol at any time..
B. If students take an alcohol program online, they can drink alcohol .
C. Students having a first strike only receive punishment of fine
D. Students with a second strike pay twice as much as students with a first strike
We can infer ________from the last two paragraphs.
A. alcohol rules have no effect on college students
B. drinking alcohol remains a serious problem
C. alcohol rules aim to change behavior and the culture at the university.
D. the number of students drinking alcohol is dropping in one way.

Zhoukoudian is a small village situated about 50 kilometers to the southwest of Beijing. In the 1920s, archaeologists discovered some prehistoric human bones there which changed people’s view of China’s history. They came from an unknown species of man and were the first evidence of human life in China thousands of years ago. The remains were three teeth!
In 1929, a complete skull was also discovered. Eventually, archaeologists found almost 200 items, including six skulls and more than 150 teeth. These discoveries proved the existence of a human species who lived in the area between 700,000 and 200,000 years ago. Four sites where Beijing Man and his relatives lived were discovered on the northern face of Longgushan. They lived in the caves in the area.
However, the life span of Beijing Man was short. About 70% of the people probably died before the age of 14. Fewer than 5% lived to the age of 50. Ashes were found alongside the fossils which showed they had used fire for cooking food and also for light, warmth, and protection against wild animals. This is the earliest evidence of the use of fire anywhere in the world. They also made tools of bones and stones. Unfortunately, when Japan invaded China in 1937, excavations (發(fā)掘) at the Beijing Man Site stopped and most of the fossils disappeared, including a Beijing Man skull. After the People’s Republic of China was established in 1949, the work started again.
Zhoukoudian was listed as a World Heritage Site in December 1987. It has not only given us important information about prehistoric Asian societies, but also provided amazing evidence about the process of evolution. Today, parts of the caves have been badly affected by rain. Some areas are almost completely covered in weeds, causing serious damage. Pollution from the nearby factories has also led to the problem. This is a very serious matter and the Chinese Academy of Sciences is trying to raise public awareness of protecting it.

For Americans, a mosquito bite is an itchy(使人發(fā)癢的) bother, but for many in Africa, a tiny bite can be deadly. One million people die each year of malaria, a disease spread by infected mosquitoes. Most of these people live in Africa, and are under age 5.
Malaria can be prevented and treated. However, many African nations don’t have the funds to fight it. Nothing but Nets (NBN) hopes to change that. The United Nations Foundation created the campaign in 2006. The mission: Squash(壓制) malaria by covering sleeping areas with nets. Hanging bed nets treated with insecticide(殺蟲劑) is the simplest way to stop mosquitoes from biting at night. The chemical lasts four to five years. For $10, anyone can send a net to Africa and help save a life.
So far, NBN has raised $19 million and delivered 700,000 nets to seven countries. Families are taught how to use the nets. Kids also get vaccines(疫苗) and vitamins. “Women line up for miles to get these interventions(干預(yù)措施) for their kids,” says NBN director Elizabeth McKee Gore. “They understand the importance.” So do kids in this country. “They get so excited thinking of ways to raise money,” says NBN spokesperson and basketball star Ruth Riley.
NBN’s biggest fund-raiser is Katherine Commale, 7. She’s been spreading the buzz(嗡嗡聲) about bed nets for the past two years. To show how they work, she and her brother made a picture. “We teach that bed nets can save lives,” she told TFK.
Katherine has raised $42,000 for NBN. “She just wants those who need a net to have one,” says her mom, Lynda. “It’s pretty simple to her.” To find out how you can help, visit nothingbutnets.net.
