I look in the mirror, and I'm not happy with what I see. I don't have a "perfect" face. I look in the magazines and all I see are girls with fair hair, blue eyes, and, of course, a pretty little nose. They're on the outside of the buses that I take home, the television programs I watch, and the billboards(廣告牌)I walk under. Almost every advertisement I see shows this human physical "perfection". These billboards not only tell me what to drink, but also how to look.

Our society places more importance on a person's physical beauty, rather than their ability, honesty and character. We have influenced women to go through painful surgeries(手術(shù))and starve themselves to become this society-built physical model. To be a beautiful woman in the 21st century doesn't mean that you are a brilliant doctor or caring mother. It means you have the perfect jaw, eyes and lips. It means that you can be six feet tall and weigh one hundred and ten pounds.

But what about the women who are starting to leave their youth? Instead of looking at aging as a sign of wisdom, we try to prevent the aging process (過(guò)程). It's a kind of funny thing to want to look eighteen when fifty. Fifty is a relaxed age, when you can step back and look at all you've achieved(successfully complete something). It is when your hard work pays off. Unfortunately, our society just sees you as “old”. To stop the aging process, women buy wrinkle(皺紋)creams, do eye lifts and face lifts. They spend thousands of dollars to win the hopeless battle against age.

I remember when I was about thirteen years old and going through teens, I had oily hair, and a half developed body. I hated the way I looked. I used to cry to my mother all the time, but she would just laugh and tell me that "you don't want anyone to like your appearance. It's your heart that is important, because beauty fades(消逝)." I knew that she was right. If you work on your heart enough, people will start to see the beauty in you, which lasts and remains on even after you die.

1.The main idea of the first paragraph is that .

A. the author doesn't have a perfect face

B. women have to look beautiful

C. photos of beautiful girls can be seen everywhere

D. there are too many beauties in daily life

2.What's the author's attitude towards being "old"?

A. It's a pity that people have to get old.

B. It's a fruitful and wise time.

C. It's stupid to try to stay young.

D. It's a pity that society looks down upon the old.

3.It is that regard(s) the physical beauty as more important.

A. women themselves

B. the author's parents

C. newspapers and magazines

D. society

4.What's the author's opinion about beauty?

A. The author doesn't like the beauties our society values.

B. It is not important whether a person looks beautiful or not.

C. It is a person's heart and inner qualities that are important rather than the physical beauty.

D. The author feels appearance is important to a person.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2015-2016學(xué)年廣東汕頭金山中學(xué)高二下期中考試英語(yǔ)卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

We spend so much time waiting to be loved, hoping love will find us, and searching for that special love. Unfortunately, that’s not usually how life works. Loving yourself is mainly having self-respect, which is the only dependable way to create love in your own life, so you can share it with others. To be able to be loved, you must love and respect yourself as much as you do others. By doing so, you are enabling positive energy and allowing for great situation to occur in your life.

Bringing joy to other people’s lives will help you find joy in your own. In addition, those who you treat well will likely repay you with the same kindness. Gradually, you will start to feel your worth through the smiles of gratitude. However, don’t just be very kind to people so you can receive royal treatment.

Don’t punish yourself for something you have done in the past. Instead, look at the mistake as a learning experience. Say to yourself now, “I forgive myself for..." Go to look in a mirror, and say it out loud to yourself. Look at yourself right in the eyes, and speak forgiveness like you mean it. If you do, laugh out loud, realizing that was then and this is now. Every day is a new beginning.

We all want a nice house, nice things, and someone to share our life with. Find your true wants objectively. Are you eager for power, a religion, or simply a motive? Sometimes, it’s easier to hide the truth from yourself, but figuring out what you really want will help you know yourself better. This will hopefully aid you in answering important questions you often ask yourself.

Write about your experiences, good and bad. When you write down good experiences, allow yourself to feel those feelings. When you remember bad experiences, allow yourself to feel self-compassion(自我同情). Compassion is not self-pity, but rather a willingness to accept one’s own pain and regret. Compassion allows us to be present with our pain, so we can acknowledge it and let it go.

1.What can we conclude from the passage?

A. We must show great respect for others.

B. We should love ourselves in order to get love.

C. We should overcome any difficulty.

D. We must have mercy on everyone.

2.According to the passage, most people ________________

A. have a dependable way to create love in their lives

B. keep their self-respect hidden in their hearts

C. are longing to get love from family or friends

D. are waiting for chances to give love to others

3.When you realize you have made a mistake, _______________.

A. you should blame yourself for what you have done

B. you should find a way to bring joy to others.

C. you should face a mirror for a long time.

D. you should learn a lesson from your mistake.

4.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

A. To show how smartly he can love himself.

B. To give advice on how to love ourselves.

C. To warn us not to be lost in self-pity.

D. To express a special love for the readers.
