Does reading great literature expand our imagination and better our moral and social
sensibilities? For most people, it's just wishful thinking because there's no evidence that people
are morally or socially better for reading Tolstoy or other great books.
But just hold on a second there. Actually, there is such evidence, says US writer Annie
Murphy Paul. She argues in Time magazine that "deep reading", as opposed to browsing web
pages, makes us nicer and smarter.
Her evidence includes several studies carried out by some psychologists.
One is based in Canada. Two psychologists found that individuals who often read fiction
appear to be better able to understand other people, sympathize with them and view the world
from their perspective.
But this improvement is only possible if we do deep reading, which isn't just about
understanding the meaning of each word, Paul explains. Deep reading is "slow, devoted, rich in
sensory detail and emotional and moral complexity". Through processing details, comparisons,
and other literary devices, the reader's brain creates a mental representation as if the scene were
unfolding in real life.
“It's said that reading a good book is like falling in love with the writer. Paul cites another
study by psychologist Victor Nell from a university in South Africa, who found that when
readers are enjoying the experience most, the pace of their reading slows.
The combination of fast, fluent understanding of words and slow, unhurried progress on the
page gives deep readers time to enrich their reading with their own thoughts, analysis, memories
and opinions. It's as if reader and writer were engaged in a deep and real conversation, like
people falling in love.
None of this is possible when we browse web pages. We will eventually lose the ability to
appreciate our literary heritage because novels, poems and other kinds of literature can be
understood only by readers whose brains are trained to read them. And even some educators just
meet young people where they are by adapting education to their onscreen habits.
With the electronic devices spreading universally, Paul warns, deep reading has become an
endangered practice. We should care about how we read as much as what we read. So pick up a
book, sit back, and let a spiritual journey begin that will take you places only deep reading can.

The Fish I didn't Catch
I still remember my first fishing experience as if it were but yesterday. I have been many times in my life (like when I got admitted to the best school), but never more intensely sothan when I received that first fishing from my uncle.
My uncle, who knew by long where pickerel(梭魚)would gather, placed me at the most favorable point. I threw out my line and waited anxiously for a bite, the float up and down rapidly on the surface of the water. But nothing came of it. "Try again," said my uncle. Suddenly the float out of sight. "Now for it," thought I; "here is a fish at last."
I made a strong pull, only to bring up a tangle of weeds. Again and again I cast out my line with aching arms, and drew it back empty. I looked at my uncle 。"Try once more," hesaid;"we fishermen must have
Suddenly something tugged at my line, and swept off with it into deep water. Pulling it up quickly, I saw a fine pickerel wriggling in the sun. "Uncle!”I cried, looking back in uncontrollable , "I've got a fish!”"Not yet," said my uncle. Just then, I saw the scared fish shooting into the middle of the stream, my hook hung from the line. I had lost my prize.
My heart sank with it and I felt like a failure. We tend to speak of the of childhood as matters of little importance those of grown-ups. Controlled by reason and self-respect, the sorrows of grown-ups the social customs and rules of conduct the sorrows of childhood are a complete abandonment to the passion. The doll's nose is broken, and the whole world with it.
So, overcome with my bitter disappointment, I refused to be ,even by my uncle's guarantee that there were more fish in the river. He refitted my bait, and, putting the pole again in my hands, told me to try my luck once more.
"But remember, boy," he said, with a smile, "it's no use to boast of(自夸)anything before it's done, nor then, either, it speaks for itself."
How often I have been reminded of the fish that I did not catch !When I hear people talking about their distant aims as if they had already been achieved, I call to mind that by the riverside, and the wise caution of my uncle takes the form of a proverb of application: "NEVER BOAST OF YOUR FISH BEFORE YOU CATCH HIM."

Here’s a movie—a sharp, sugar-rush of fun that’s guaranteed to entertain the entire family.
With some terrific computer-generated effects, a great cast and a fun-packed storyline, Robots is the best animated film (動畫片) since The Incredibles. Yep, it really is that good.
Set in a world populated by robots, Ewan McGregor plays Rodney Copperbottom, a young robot who leaves his small-town home to pursue his dream of becoming an inventor.
But after arriving in Robot City, his hopes of getting a job at Bigweld Industries are destroyed when he learns the firm has been taken over by the evil Ratchet (Greg Kinnear).
Egged on by his controlling mum, Madame Gasket (Jim Broadbent), Ratchet plans to reduce half of Robot City’s citizens to scrap metal by refusing to sell the spare parts they need to survive.
Instead, he wants to make a fortune selling expensive upgrades that few can afford. As he says, “Why be you when you can be new?”
Aided by a few misfit robots known as the Rustles—including Robin Williams as the cowardly' (膽小的)Fender (“I’m made of a metal called Afraidium”)—Rodney must track down the firm’s founder, Bigweld (Mel Brooks), and convince him to save the city from Ratchet’s plans.
The first thing that’ll strike you about the movie is the thought that's gone into creating Robot City. It’s a wondrous world full of mechanical marvels including wind-up cars and walking streetlamps.
Also terrific are the special effects. This might be an animated movie but at times you’ll catch yourself thinking it’s really a live-action film.
Of course, there have been plenty of animated movies that looked the part but were let down by a weak storyline (see Shark Tale, for example).
But Robots grips (扣人心弦) right from the start thanks to a heart-warming and thoroughly engaging plot that never bores.
My only complaints are with Williams who, as usual, has a one-in-10 success rate with his jokes. Also a letdown is a romantic subplot between Rodney and a shapely robot called Cappy (Halle Berry) that doesn’t go anywhere.
\Complains aside, this is a mechanical marvel that’ll have you bolted firmly to your seat.
BEST QUOTE(引述): Fender: “Even though you had a discouraging day, just remember there’s another one coming tomorrow.”
BEST BIT: Check out those amazing images.
WORST BIT: Robin Williams, character does an unfunny Britney Spears dance routine.
IF YOU LIKED…Ice Age, The Incredibles, Toy Story... YOU’LL LIKE THIS.
1.This piece of writing is a _______.
A. commercial advertisementB. film review
C. movie posterD. literary essay
2.The cast of Robots is made up of all the following actors or actresses EXCEPT _______.
A. Ewan McGregor B. Robin Williams
C. Britney SpearsD. Halle Berry
3.What is Shark Tale an example of?
A. A great cast.B. A poor plot.
C. Special effects.D. Clumsy animation.
