On my first day of the sixth grade, I noticed one little girl called Amy on the school bus. “Don’t __1__ her,” Lauren said, who sat beside me. “Or they will make fun of you.”
Amy had many __2__ differences — lots of reasons for other kids to make fun of her. Her eyes weren’t straight. Her glasses were an inch thick. And she had really ugly teeth.
Every day __3__ we drove to and from school, kids would shout insults(侮辱)at Amy. “God, what a (n)__24__ face! Stop looking at me!” “Mr. Rolland (the driver)! Amy took off her __5__, and now her eyes are __6__ me! Make her put them back on!” For a while I shouted my share of insults, just so I’d fit in (合群)__7__, I didn’t want them to treat me the same way they treated Amy.
But while I was insulting her, my heart __8__ for the girl. I could see that the insults were making her look __9__,because she was so ashamed (羞愧)and alone. Then I wanted to __10__ her. I just didn’t know how to stop my schoolmates __11__ the night of our class roller-skating party.
Our whole class was there, including Amy. Amy didn’t know how to __12__, but I could see how much she wanted to __13__ like the rest of us. So I skated over to her and took her by the hand; we began the journey together around the skating rink (溜冰場(chǎng)).She just smiled, and sometimes she would laugh in __14__.
On the school bus the next morning there was much news about Amy and me __15__ together, __16__ nobody insulted her or me. And they didn’t do that for the rest of the year.
After graduation, I never __17__ Amy again. However, I never forget her and I’ve always __18__ if I changed her life for the better. But I know for sure she changed my __19__. After becoming her friend, I no longer tried to impress (給……留下印象)people by trying to __20__ like them. I became myself.

America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect (影響) American society in many ways — education, medicine, and business. Quietly, the graying of America has made us a very different society— one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior(行為)is suitable (合適)at various ages. A person's age no longer tells you anything about his/her social position, marriage or health. There's no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school ,get a job, or stop working isn't as strong as it used to be. It doesn't surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the firs time. Public ideas are changing. Many people say, 'I am much younger than my mother - or my father - was at my age.' No one says ‘Act your age’ anymore. We've stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.
1.It can be learnt from the text that the aging of the population in America_________ .
A.has made people feel younger
B.has changed people's social position
C. has changed people's understanding of age
D. has slowed down the country's social development
2.The underlined word ‘one’ refers to_________.
A. a society B. America C. a place D. population
3.‘Act your age’ means people should_________.
A.be active when they are old
B.do the right thing at the right age
C. show respect for their parents young or old
D. take more physical exercise suitable to their age
4.If a 25-year-old man becomes general manager of a big firm, the writer of the text would most probably consider it ______.
A.normal B.wonderful C.unbelievable D.unreasonable
