My first English novel was Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, recommended by many Eng?lish teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners. But my experience was some?what disastrous"艮糟的) .Stumbling (搖搖晃晃的) along the lines,I had great difficulty in under?standing the novel, let alone enjoying it. It's not the vocabulary that troubled me,but rather the way Austen constructs sentences, and her way of thinking, which seemed too remote to me at that time. My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway's novel Farewell to Arms. No long and complicated sentences. And I particularly liked his concise (簡明的) and straightforward style. So my first suggestion is,as a beginner, you'd better choose contemporary novels instead of classical ones. You can easily engage yourself in reading, get fun out of it,and gradually build up confidence. I do not mean to exclude (不在考慮之列) classi?cal novels for ever. Actually, the second reading of Pride and Prejudice greatly pleased me (probably the result of my improved English comprehension) . It is only that classical novels are less accessible (易接近的) to beginners due to their language styles and social background. I'd like to recommend three contemporary novelists to you―Ursula Le Guin,Ernest Hemingway, and Doris Lessing.

However, reading novels is not the only way to improve your English. In fact,if you re?strict yourself to novels, you will miss a lot of treasures. English essays can at once inform you, entertain you,and refine your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell's work. Its language is plain, yet you cannot help feeling the elegance (雅致) and the peculiar sense of hu?mor. His simple language enables his philosophy within the reach of ordinary people. Here comes my second suggestion―essays are indispensable (必不可少的) .

My last advice is never follow others' recommendations and opinions blindly, however fa?mous or influential the person might be. We should be open to various ideas, but always think and determine for ourselves. As a saying goes, one man's meat is another man's poison. With that in mind,we are bound to find out our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.

It was getting harder and harder to pay attention. Finally, they began calling out the graduates' names. The classmates formed a single line and made their way up towards the po dium (講臺) .

It takes a special person to stick with a goal as long as she has.

I love you,Kim,and I want you to know that I admire you for that symbolic piece of pa?per that will soon adorn (使光彩) a wall in your house.

In the words of Caleb,my 3-year-old; "HAPPY GRADUATION,AUNT KIMMY!"

Disney World,Florida,is the biggest amusement resort in the world. It covers

24. 4 thou?sand acres, size of Manhattan. It was opened on October 1 ,1971,five years after Walt Disney's death, and it is a larger, slightly more ambitious version of Disneyland near Los An?geles. Foreigners tend to associate Walt Disney with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and with his other famous cartoon characters,Mickey Mouse,Donald Duck and Pluto,or with his nature films, whose superb photography is spoiled,in the opinion of some,by the vulgarity (粗俗) of the commentary and musical background.

There is very little that could be called vulgar in Disney World. It attracts people of most taste and most income groups, and people of all ages, from toddlers to grandpas. There are two expensive hotels,a golf course, and forest trails for horseback riding and rivers for canoeing. But the central attraction of the resort is the Magic Kingdom.

Between the huge parking lots and the Magic Kingdom lies a broad artificial lake. In the distance rise the towers of Cinderella's Castle, which like every other building in the Kingdom is built of solid materials. Even getting to the Magic Kingdom is quite an adventure. You have a choice of transportation. You can either cross the lake on a replica (仿制品) of a Mississippi pad?dle wheeler,or you can glide around the shore in a streamlined (流線型的) monorail (單軌) train.

When you reach the terminal, you walk straight into a little square which faces Main Street. Main Street is late 19th century. There are modern shops inside the buildings, but all the decades are of the period. There are hanging baskets fiill of red and white flowers, and there is no traffic except a horse draw streetcar and an ancient doubledecker bus. Yet as you walk through the magic Kingdom, you are actually walking on top of a network of underground roads. This is how the shops ? restaurants and all the other material needs of the Magic Kingdom are.
