【題目】It is often easy to feel overwhelmed (受打擊的)in the face of species loss and habitat destruction. The problem is large and complex, and it's natural for individuals to feel powerless. Yet, everything you do is vitally important. It may not seem to amount to much in the grand scheme of things, but your seemingly small actions, added together, can make a big difference. Here are some things you can do:

Protect Wildlife Habitat. Perhaps the greatest threat to many species is the widespread destruction of habitats. Farming, development, and cutting down of forests all result in loss of wildlife habitats. In areas where rare species live, habitat destruction can quickly force a species to extinction. By protecting habitat, entire communities of animals can also be protected together. Parks, reserves, and other protected lands are too often the only places left untouched by habitat destruction.

Reduce the threat of invasive (入侵的) species. The spread of non-native species has greatly reduced native populations around the world. Invasive species compete with native species for resources and habitats. They can even prey on native species directly, greatly reducing their population. one way to reduce the threat of invasive species is to grow native plants in your garden and to welcome native animals into your yard.

Place bird-shaped paper on your windows. It is estimated that as many as one billion birds in the United States die each year due to collisions with windows. You can help reduce the number of collisions simply by placing bird-shaped paper on your windows. Other simple steps you can take are to draw the shades and curtains during brightest parts of the day, and put screens on the outside of the windows.

Slow down when driving. Many native animals live in developed areas, in other words, close to humans. Roads are a particularly big danger to them: animals are at risk every time they try to cross. So when you’re out and about, slow down, and keep an eye out for wildlife.

1Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. How Do Animals Become Extinct?

B. The Importance of Protecting Wildlife.

2The main idea of the second paragraph is ______.

A. more parks and reserves should be built

B. we should keep wildlife habitats from destruction

C. conditions of parks and reserves have been improved

3People are advised to put bird-shaped paper on their windows to ______.

A. beautify their houses

B. protect the windows from birds

C. attract more birds to live nearby

D. stop birds from hitting windows by mistake

4The underlined phrase “prey on” in paragraph 3 probably means “_____”

A. drive away B. live with

C. hunt down D. fight with

In Times of Crists, We Need Classical Music

It’s still lying in front of me on my desk. The booklet, entitled Time for Outrange(憤怒) , was written by the 93-year-old French diplomat(外交官) Stephane Hessel. “The power of money,” Hessel says, filled with anger, “has never been as great and selfish and 1 as it is now.”

But what does the outrage of this Frenchman have to do with classical music and , ultimately, with me, music director of the Orchestre Symphenique de Montreal(蒙特利爾交響樂團(tuán)) ?

A lot, I, too, am outraged by the direction of industrial society, with materialism and consumerism leading the way. I want to show that, because of its powerful impact, classical music can play a(n) 2 role right now.

We all sense that our society is experiencing an almost revolutionary 3. Life is getting faster, competition is fiercer and social cohesion(凝聚力) is reducing. Like most people, I have no idea how liberty and civil rights would develop in the era of globalization and ever-evolving technological advancement.

But I see this as an opportunity for a(n) 4 to classical music. The great symphonies of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven are not museum pieces we should listen to only if we want to 5 ourselves with some music history. Now are they a decoration or a relaxation exercise for the quickened pace of life.

They are more than what a radio station for classical music once promised - “your oasis(綠洲) of well-being.” They are timeless compositions that 6 all the uncertainties and insecurities of this new period. They can support us in our search for meaning. Beethoven, for example, was convinced that man had the capacity to change for the better and to go throughout life. This is why there is so much hope in his music. His symphonies was mean to 7 people forward.

Classic music 8 our senses and emotions in such a way that we were thrown back onto ourselves. It 9 to listeners to make use of their own reason and reflect on their actions. Music’s sole purpose is to be experienced. That experience, in turn, is why music can change our perceptions(認(rèn)知) of ourselves and thereby our interactions with others.

10 to explain this powerful impact of music will always remain unsatisfying, but this much is certain: aesthetic(審美的) experiences can transform people.
