My parents ran a small restaurant in Seattle. It was open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and my first job, when I was six years old, was diner’s shoes. My father had done it when he was young, so he taught me to do it right, telling me to offer to re-shine the shoes if the customer wasn’t .
Working in the restaurant was a of great pride because I was also working for the of the whole family. But my father made it clear that I had to certain standards to be part of the team. I had to be punctual, hard-working and to the customers.
I was paid for my work I did at the restaurant. One day I made the mistake of Dad I thought he should give me $10 a week. He said, “OK, then how about you me for the three meals a day you eat here? And for the times you bring in your buddies for free sodas?” He I owed him about $40 a week.
I remember home to Seattle after being away in the Army for about two years. I had just been to captain and was full of pride as I walked into my parents’ restaurant. The thing Dad said was, “How about you cleaning up tonight?” I cannot it! I’m an officer in the US Army! But it didn’t matter. As far as Dad was , I was just another member of the team. I the mop. One evening last summer, when I asked my 14-year-old son, Ray, for help with dinner, his response shocked me. "What’s a colander(漏勺)? " he asked.
I could only blame myself. In the family, nobody else’s hands went in the sauce except my own. But that night, as I explained with a touch of panic that a colander is the thing with holes in it, I wondered what else I hadn’t prepared Ray for.
As parents, while we focus on our sons’ confidence and character, we perhaps don’t always consider that we are also raising someone’s future roommates, boyfriends, husbands, or fathers. I wanted to know that I’d raised a boy who would never ask the woman in his life, "What’s for dinner?" So I came up with a plan: I would offer Ray a private home economics course. I was delighted to find that he didn’t say no. For two hours, three days a week, Ray was all mine. One day, as his tomato sauce reduced on the stove, he washed and seasoned a chicken for roasting. Then he rolled out the piecrust (餡餅皮) and filled it with apples, all while listening to my explanation on the importance of preheating an oven.
I knew that he would rather have been shooting hoops in the driveway than learning to mend socks with his mother—he tried to beg off sewing lessons, even though I insisted that one day, someone would find the sight of him fixing his own shirt very attractive— but it couldn’t be denied that he was learning, and more than just housekeeping. "I appreciate what you do as a mom," he told me one day. Ray now understands the finer points of cooking, and more importantly, he realizes there’s nothing masculine (男子氣概的) about being helpless.
Now, not only can he make his own dinner, but also he can make a big meal for his family. That’s what I call a man. I’m glad that I prepared so great a present for my future daughter-in-law.
1.Why was the author shocked at her son’s response?
A. Because he was not well behaved.
B. Because he refused to help with dinner.
C. Because he didn’t know the common kitchen tools.
D. Because he was very curious about kitchen tools.
2.In the author’s opinion, some parents pay little attention to _______.
A. building up children’s confidence
B. telling kids what is right and wrong
C. preparing children for their future life
D. making children live a hard life
3. After learning to do housework, Ray _______.
A. fell in love with sewing
B. did other work in the house
C. began to be more hardworking
D. acknowledged his mother’s efforts
4. We can infer from the text that Ray _______.
A. made great progress in cooking.
B. always thought housework interesting.
C. preferred sewing to cooking.
D. was unwilling to learn cooking at first.
5.What would be the best title for the text?
A. Useful education for boys
B. The importance of housework
C. Boys should be involved in housework.
D. Cooking and sewing make boys masculine.

We have all experienced days when everything goes wrong. A day may begin well enough, but suddenly everything seems to get out of control. It seems as if a single unimportant event may cause a number of things to happen. Let us suppose that you are preparing a meal and keeping an eye on the baby at the same time. The telephone rings and this means your troubles are beginning. While you are on the phone, the baby pulls the table-cloth off the table, destroying your half prepared meal. You hang up(掛斷電話) hurriedly and attend to your baby. Meanwhile, the meal gets burnt. As if this were not enough to bring you to tears, your husband arrives, unexpectedly bringing three guests to dinner.

Seeing a cake flying through the air, a truck-driver had to stop his truck all of a sudden. The truck was carrying empty beer bottles and hundreds of them slid off the back of the truck on to the road. This led to yet another angry argument. Meanwhile, the traffic piled up(排成長(zhǎng)龍) behind. It took the police nearly an hour to get the traffic on the move again. In the meanwhile, the truck-driver had to sweep up hundreds of broken bottles. Only two dogs were enjoying themselves from the accident, for they were happily having what was left of the cake. It was just one of those days!
