1由“We all know that Britain and the US are two countries connected by a common language. But in fact, ___1___. as BBC did in a recent story called 8 Situations When Britons Behave Differently From Americans”可知,眾所周知,英國與美國因?yàn)槭褂猛环N語言而有諸多相似之處。

2由“chances are that the victim will say "sorry" before the other can make his or her own apology.”

3由“Britons don’t all change into evening dress for supper like what you may have seen in popular TV shows like Downton Abbey. But they do tend to make an effort when going out for dinner somewhere nice. Americans, however, will probably wear a casual shirt to a fancy eatery.” 故選A項(xiàng)。

4由“When dining out at a restaurant, ___4___ They think the food is somehow "tainted" once they’ve poked at it with a knife and fork.”

5由“Even if they’re being taken in a roundabout way”可知,甚至在看見司機(jī)繞路時(shí)。

In 2005, Winston Duncan was traveling with his mother in Southern Africa when he saw an old lady and young boy walking down a road together. He thought of his own grandmother and wondered how he could help the old lady and others in Africa who have to walk a long way.

Duncan, who lived in Washington State was 10 at the time, and his solution was to give them bikes. With his mom, he started Wheels to Africa, an organization that for the past 14 years has taken bicycles donated from residents of the. Washington area and shipped them across the world to people in need.

Most of the 8000 bikes they have collected have gone to countries in Africa, helping cut down hours of walking for students and other postmen. But last week, Duncan, travelled with a handful of volunteers and 400 bikes to a destination much closer to his home yet still in need: Puerto Rico. More than a year after it was destroyed by Hurricane Maria, the island suffers from transportation problems.

"It was a little chaotic (混亂的) — as soon as they got their bikes, they were just having fun riding around the parking lot," said Austin Higgins, a New Jersey resident who recently joined Wheels to Africa as its photographer and videographer. "Some people who received bicycles were almost speechless, and some of them cried, because it was something they had requested for Christmas from Santa Claus," he said.

The donated bikes included some high-end racing models, which went to teenagers interested in pursuing serious cycling.

Duncan recently graduated from Bard College and is in Arlington working at a political consulting firm. He now encourages kids in the Washington area to get involved with the organization, and some have joined him on trips to Africa and on this trip to Puerto Rico.

A small piece of fish each day may keep the heart doctor away. That’s the finding of a study of Dutch men in which deaths from heart disease were more than 50 percent lower among those who consumed (消耗) at least an ounce (盎司) of salt water fish per day compared to those who never ate fish.

The Dutch research is one of three human studies that give strong scientific support to the long held belief that eating fish can provide health benefits, particularly to the heart.

Heart disease is the number-one killer in the United States, with more than 550,000 deaths occurring from heart attacks each year. But long before researchers have noticed that the incidence (發(fā)生率) of heart disease is lower in cultures that consume more fish than Americans do. There are fewer heart disease deaths, for example, among the Eskimos of Greenland, who consume about 14 ounces of fish a day, and among the Japanese, whose daily fish consumption (消費(fèi)) averages more than 3 ounces.

For 20 years, the Dutch study followed 852 middle-aged men, 20 percent of whom ate no fish.

At the start of the study, average fish consumption was about two-thirds of an ounce each day, with more men eating lean fish than fatty fish.

During the next two decades, 78 of the men died from heart disease. The fewest deaths were among the group who regularly ate fish, even at levels far lower than those of the Japanese or Eskimos. This relationship was true regardless of other factors such as age, high blood pressure, or blood cholesterol (膽固醇) levels.

1We can infer from the passage that there are fewer heart disease deaths ________.

A.in highly-developed countries

B.in countries of the yellow-skin race

C.in the countries with good production of fish

D.in the countries with high consumption of fish

2The underlined words “l(fā)ean fish” (paragraph 5) mean “________”.

A.large fishB.fresh fish

C.fish that have little fatD.fish that live in salt water

3The passage is mainly about ________.

A.the changes in people’s diet

B.the effect of fish eating on people’s health

C.the high incidence of heart disease in some countries

D.the daily fish consumption of people in different cultures
