It came with devastating force,a natural disaster of strange intensity that shocked the world and killed tens of thousands. The waters have now receded, but disease and food and water shortages trouble a number of countries around the Indian Ocean.Millions of survivors face serious problems.

The number of survivors in need of food aid after the Indian Ocean disaster has climbed to 5 million people. They stretch from Somalia to Thailand, and the figure could rise further, the United Nations has said.

Relief teams hope to reach all of the estimated 700 000 hungry in Sri Lanka within three more days.It could take longer before enough food aid gets to the nearly 1 million people in need in hard-to-reach parts of Indonesia.Another serious problem is the need for purified water.

Although aid had poured in from all over the world to the disaster areas,“Logistics is the big problem here—just getting the stuff out to people who need it,”said Ron Libby, emergency management specialist at the USA agency for International Development.

Relief efforts are hindered by the difficulty of delivering aid to the more than 1000 islands scattered across hundreds of kilometers of ocean.

For those who survived the tsunami's force, disease is now the No.1 problem.Five million people are short of water, food and basic sanitation across the region.World Health Organization(WHO) crisis chief David Navarro said 50 000 more people could die from disease and other causes,as has been the case in previous humanitarian emergencies.

WHO said it had already received a handful of reports of malaria(瘧疾) and dengue fever(登革熱) and hundreds of reports of diarrhea(腹瀉) and infected wounds. It said millions of water purification tablets had been sent to Asia, along with sanitation engineers to rebuild water sanitation infrastructure.

Psychologists are warning that mental health problems caused by the tsunami could prove harder to resolve than the physical damage.

Some survivors say they are plagued by recurring nightmares about walls of water. Many locals are afraid to return to beachside homes.Officials also warn that suicide rates could rise dramatically as parents struggle with guilt at losing children.

Psychologists estimate that 20 to 30 per cent of people who face traumatic events eventually develop symptoms, such as alcohol abuse, lack of concentration at work and an inability to develop close relationships.

Although the Thai Government has offered to build temporary beachside housing, many refugee families are refusing to come down from the hills.Others are afraid to go back to jobs on the sea.

Over 150 000 people were killed by the tsunami, but hundreds and thousands more have been left with no means to earn a living.

In the village of Akirapettai in India, all that is left is the twisted wreckage of the fishing fleet.Dakshina Murti,a fisherman, not only lost three family members, but also lost his boats, his nets, everything.

“Everything's gone,”he says. With no government aid so far,all he has is a wreck. There are several million people who suffered the same experience.Homes have been destroyed,as well as wharves, docks, and sheds.

For now, rebuilding the economy remains a distant concept.

The largest earthquake ( magnitude里氏 9.5) of the 20th century happened on May 22, 1960 off the coast of South Central Chile.

It generated(生成) one of the most destructive Pacific-wide tsunamis(海嘯). Near the generating area, both the earthquake and the tsunami were very much destructive, particularly in the coastal area from Concepcion to the south end of Isla(島) Chiloe. The largest tsunami damage occurred at Isla Chiloe---the coastal area closest to the epicenter(震中). Huge tsunami waves measuring as high as 25 meters arrived within 10 to 15 minutes after the earthquake, killing at least two hundred people, sinking all the boats, and flooding half a kilometer inland.

There was large damage and loss of life at Concepcion, Chile's top industrial city. Near the city of Valdivia, the earthquake and following aftershocks generated landslides which killed 18 people. At the port city of Valparaiso, a city of 200,000, many buildings collapsed. A total of 130,000 houses were destroyed --- one in every three in the earthquake zone and nearly 2,000,000 people were left homeless.

Total damage losses, including to agriculture and to industry, were estimated(估計(jì)) to be over a half billion dollars . The total number of death related with both the tsunami and the earthquake was never found accurately for the region. Estimates of deaths reached between 490 to 5,7002 with no distinction(差別) as to how many deaths were caused by the earthquake and how many were caused by the tsunami. However, it is believed that most of the deaths in Chile were caused by the tsunami.

Where did the largest tsunami damage occurred?

   A. Concepcion      B. Isla Chiloe       C. Valdivia      D. Valparaiso

What can we learn about the tsunami waves generated by the earthquake?

   A. The tsunami waves as high as 25 meters arrived immediately after the earthquake.

   B. The tsunami waves killed 200 people and sank all boats.

   C. The tsunami waves were very destructive.

   D. The tsunami waves flooded half of the inland.

What is generally thought the main cause of deaths in Chile?

   A. landslides      B. the tsunami      C. aftershocks      D. the magnitude 9.5 earthquake

What is the total number of deaths in the earthquake?

   A. 2,000,000      B. between 490 to 57,002

   C. 200,000        D. it was hard to know.

What does the underlined word “collapsed” probably mean ?

D
The eruption of a volcano in the Canary Islands could trigger a “mega-tsunami”(巨大海嘯)that would hit Atlantic coastlines with waves as high as 330 feet, scientists said on Wednesday. They said an eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma, part of the Spanish island chain off West Africa, was likely to cause a massive chunk(大塊)of rock to break off, crashing into the sea and kicking up huge walls of water higher than any other in recorded history. The tsunami would be capable of traveling huge distances at up to 500 miles an hour, the scientists said in a research paper to be published soon.
Simon Day, of the Benfield Greig Hazard Research Centre at the University College of London, said that as the volcano was not erupting at present, the short-term and medium-term risks were “negligible”. But Cumbre Vieja should be monitored closely for any signs of activity so that emergency services could plan an effective response, he said. “Eruptions of Cumbre Vieja occur at intervals of decades to a century or so and there may be a number of eruptions before its collapse(倒塌),” said Day, who cooperated on the research with Steven Ward of the University of California. “Although the year-to-year probability of a collapse is therefore low, the resulting tsunami would be a major disaster with indirect effects around the world.”
The effects would spread north, west and south of the Canaries, with the west Sahara bearing the worst of the wave’s energy. The energy released by the collapse would be equal to the electricity consumption of the entire United States in half a year.
Immediately after the landslide(山崩),a huge wave of water 93,000 feet high and tens of miles wide would form. As the landslide rocks moved deeper under water, a tsunami would develop. Within 10 minutes, the tsunami would have moved a distance of almost 155 miles. On the west Saharan shore, waves would probably reach heights of 330 feet.
Florida and the Caribbean, the final north Atlantic destinations to be affected by the tsunami, would have to brace themselves for 165-foot waves some eight to nine hours after the landslide. Wave heights toward Europe would be smaller, but substantial waves would hit the coasts of Britain, Spain Portugal and France. The research paper estimated water would penetrate several miles inland and that the devastation would cause trillions of dollars in damage.
76. What would be the result of a big chunk rock falling into the sea?
A. Waves would be very high.                                         B. The volcano would stop.
C. Walls of water would kick up a storm.                          D. An earthquake would take place.
77. The word “negligible”(Line 3, Paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to ______.
A. unimportant                    B. small                              C. predictable               D. avoidable
78. From the passage we may learn that the volcano erupts ______.
A. every year                                                                 B. every 5 to 9 years
C. every 10 to 100 years                                                        D. every 5 to 10 months
79. All of the following are true EXCEPT ______.
A future eruption of Cumbre Vieja volcano may experience a massive collapse
Waves generated by the landslide could even reach the coasts of the United States
The landslide-released energy is equal to half a year’s electricity consumption in the US
American scientists have managed to utilize the volcanic energy for civil purposes

A powerful earthquake struck the northeastern coast of Japan at two forty-six p.m. local time on March eleventh.2011. Japan's Meteorological Agency released its first tsunami(海嘯) warnings just three minutes later. The country has one of the best earthquake early warning systems in the world.
There are more than four thousand Seismic Intensity Meters in place throughout Japan to measure earthquake activity. These meters provide information within two minutes of an earthquake happening. Information about the strength and the center of the earthquake can be learned within three minutes.
There are also concrete(混凝土) sea walls around much of the Japanese coastline. But these measures proved no match for the powerful earthquake and tsunami.
Costas Synolakis ,a tsunami expert at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles said,"Japan is one of those most well-prepared countries on earth in terms of tsunami warning. They had a warning. I think what went wrong is that they had not expected the size of this event."
He says there are two reasons for this. Japan has not had any event anywhere near as big as this one in the last one hundred fifty years. And scientists had not expected such a large earthquake happening off the coast of Japan.
The nine point zero magnitude earthquake was the fourth most powerful earthquake ever recorded worldwide. It was also the worst earthquake ever to hit Japan. The tsunami waves that followed were reported to have reached as high as thirteen meters in some areas.
Costas Synolakis says Japan's concrete sea walls were not built to handle such high waves.
Experts say early warning systems will continue to be limited by these facts until earthquakes and tsunamis can be predicted
【小題1】Where can this passage probably be adapted from?

A.A magazine on scienceB.A fairy Tale
C.A scientific fantasy bookD.A newspaper
【小題2】Which of the following statements NOT true ?
A.A terrible earthquake hit the northeastern coast of Japan
B.It was also the worst earthquake in Japan
C.The 9.0 earthquake was the fourth most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan
D.Japan's concrete sea walls was unable to handle such high waves.
【小題3】According to Costas Synolakis, why did Japan suffer such a loss?
A.The country has never experienced any event as big as this one over the past 150 years
B.Japan has the best earthquake early warning systems in the world.
C.There are not concrete sea walls around all of the Japanese coastline
D.The government didn’t announce its first tsunami warnings three minutes earlier.
