London-Big Ben, the landmark London clock renowned for its accuracy and chime(鐘聲), stopped ticking for 90 minutes, an engineer said Saturday.

Officials do not know why the 147-year-old clock on the banks of the River Thames stopped at 10∶07 pm on Friday. It resumed keeping time, but stalled again at 10∶20 pm and remained still for about 90 minutes before starting up again, a spokeswoman for the House of Commons said.

There has been speculation(推測)that a recent period of hot weather may have been to blame.Temperatures in London reached 90 ℃ on Saturday, and forecasts called it England’s hottest day in May since 1953.

Big Ben, which is operated by the Palace of West-minister, survived attacks by German Luftwaffe bombers during World War Two, continuing to mark the time to within 1.5 seconds of Greenwich Mean Time.

However, the clock has experienced occasional problems. In 1962, snow caused the clock to ring in the New Year 10 minutes late.In 1976, the clock stopped on April 30, 1997, and once more three weeks later.

Big Ben is actually the clock’s 13-ton bell, which was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, the British commissioner of works at the time the clock was built.

The official name for the Gothic tower holding Big Ben is St.Stephen’s Tower.Standing 315 feet tall, it was completed in 1858 after an 1834 fire destroyed most of the Palace of Westminister.

No budget for your vacation? Try home exchanges ---- swapping houses with strangers. Agree to use each other’s cars, and you can save dollars on car rentals (租賃費(fèi)), too.

Home exchanges are not new. At least one group, Intervac, has been facilitating such an arrangement since 1953. But trading online is gaining popularity these days, with several sites in operation, including Home Exchanges. Founded in 1992, with some 28,000 listings, this company bills itself as the world’s largest home exchange club, reporting that membership has increased 30% this year.

The annual fee is usually less than US$100. Members can access thousands of listings for apartments, villas, suburban homes and farms around the world. Initial contact is made via e-mail, with subsequent communication usually by phone. Before a match is made, potential swappers tend to discuss a lot.

However, the concept may sound risky to some people. What about theft? Damage? These are reasonable causes for concern, but equally unlikely. As one swapper puts it, “Nobody is going to fly across the ocean or drive 600 miles to come steal your TV. Besides, at the same time they’re staying in your home, you are staying in their home.”

Exchange sites recommend that swappers discuss such matters ahead of time. They may fill out an agreement spelling out who shoulders which responsibilities if a problem arises. It does not matter if the agreement would hold up in court, but it does give the exchangers a little satisfaction.

Generally, the biggest complaint among home exchangers has to do with different standards of cleanliness. Swappers are supposed to make sure their home is in order before they depart, but one person’s idea of “clean” may be more forgiving than another’s. Some owners say if they come back to a less-than-sparkling kitchen, it may be inconvenient but would not sour them on future exchanges.

1.What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.How to exchange homes.

B.The biggest home exchange agency Intervac.

C.The fact that home exchanges are not new.

D.A contrast between Intervac and Home Exchanges.

2.How do home exchangers normally begin their communication?

A.By phone.            B.Via a matchmaker.

C. By e-mail.  D.Via a face-to-face meeting.

3.What is recommended in the passage to deal with the concerns about theft and damage?

A.One can file a lawsuit in court.

B.Both parties can trade online.

C.One can damage the home of the other party in return.

D.Both parties can sign an agreement beforehand.

Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for eachparagraph. There
is one extra heading which you do not need.
A. What does the Olympic Motto mean?
B. Research on individual styles improves performance.
C. Research holds the key to success.
D. Personalized programs will help.
E. New equipment has made a difference.
F. Is there a limit to record-breaking?

1. ________________________
A world record is every athlete's dream, but the hard-won records of a few years ago are
mostly just today's qualifying times. Roger Bannister's famous four-minute mile of 1956 has been
beaten by nearly 15 seconds, while almost an hour and twenty minutes has been taken off the
women's marathon since. 1953. 'Faster, higher, stronger', is the Olympic motto, and today's
competitors continue to push back the boundaries of what the body can achieve. But one wonders
if this can continue.
2. ________________________
The last forty years have seen many important technological advances. For example, since the
introduction of strong flexible, fiberglass poles, over a meter has been added to the pole vault record.
There have also been important developments in the design of the running shoe. And while a shoe
won't actually make someone run faster, modern shoes do mean many more miles of comfortable,
injury-free training.
3. ________________________
Pushing back the limits now depends more on science, technology and medicine than anything
else. Athletic technique, training programmes and diets are all being studied to find ways of taking
a few more seconds off or adding a few more centimetres to that elusive world record. It seems
that natural ability and hard work are no longer enough.
4. ________________________
The research to find more efficient ways of moving goes on. Analysis of an athlete's style is
particularly useful for events like jumping and throwing. Studies show that long jumpers need to
concentrate not on the speed of approach, as once thought, but on the angle their bodies make
with the ground as they take off. However, the rules governing each sport limit advances achieved
by new styles. For instance only one-footed takeoffs are allowed in the high jump.
5. ________________________
In the future, it should be possible to develop a more individual approach to training programmes.
Athletes will keep detailed diaries and collect data to help predict the point when training becomes
overtraining, the cause of many injuries. If athletes feed all their information into a database, it may
then be possible to predict patterns and to advise them individually when they should cut.
