Growers around the world are using new methods to grow grapes to make wine. They use natural and organic methods to control harmful insects and weeds instead of using chemicals. Now, a winery in Canada has adopted a natural way to control its grapevines (葡萄藤). The Featherstone Winery is in southern Ontario. The grapevines, like other plants, need to be cut every year.

Cutting grapevines must be done very carefully. Only a targeted area of leaves is removed from the lower part of the vines to help the grapes grow better. But at the Featherstone Winery, no man or machine does the cutting. Instead, the job is done by 40 little wooly lambs.

David Johnson owns the vineyard (葡萄園). He says he learned about using lambs while visiting wineries in New Zealand. The young lambs are perfectly designed to do the job. They eat the grape leaves on the lower parts of the vine. But they are not tall enough to reach the grapes. They only weigh about 22 kilograms, so they do not beat down the soil. And their waste makes good organic fertilizer. In addition, using the lambs costs much less than hiring workers to cut the vines for seven weeks in summer. And when the cutting is done in August, the lambs become tasty dishes.

Mr. Johnson says he had a difficult time finding enough lambs to do the job. There are about 50 million lambs in New Zealand. But there are not nearly as many in Ontario. Also, some organic pesticides (殺蟲劑) are harmful to lambs. And the lambs must be watched to make sure they do not eat too much of the grapevines.

David Johnson says the lambs help him carry out his environmental ideas about farming. They are lovely and peaceful and he likes having them in his vineyard. People visiting the vineyard also enjoy watching the lambs do their job.

A.don't cut grapevines every year

B.don't use chemicals to control harmful insects and weeds

C.don't need to control harmful insects and weeds

2.In order to help the grapes grow better, growers ________.

A.only have to remove the dead leaves

B.need to remove a specific area of leaves

C.shouldn't remove any part of the plants

D.should let little lambs do the cutting

3.Paragraph 4 is mainly about ________.

A.the future of getting lambs to do the cutting

B.the worries about using organic pesticides

C.the ways to get lambs to do the cutting

D.the problems related to lambs doing the cutting

4.We can infer from the passage that David Johnson ________.

A.owns several wineries in Canada

B.buys lambs from New Zealand

Travel Unaccompanied

Now many young people are traveling around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.

Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life. “It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone.” Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.

In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen. It is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.

Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go traveling last year.He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to document his adventures. He said he wished he had traveled alone earlier. “The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person,” said the 30yearold.

Richardson describes traveling alone like “a shot in the arm”, which “makes you a more confident person that was ready to deal with anything”. He said: “The feeling of having conquered something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I'm dealing with a difficult task. I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try.”

The great 19th century explorer John Muir once said: “Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.”

1.Which of the following will Kristina Wegscheider agree with?

A.Traveling alone is a necessary experience for everyone.

B.It is more meaningful to travel in foreign countries.

C.It is comfortable to travel around without a friend.

D.Traveling abroad helps people to find new things.

2.Traveling alone is challenging because ________.

A.it will finally build your character

B.you have to make things on your own

C.you depend on yourself whatever happens

D.it is hard for you to prove yourself to others

3.What can we infer about Chris Richardson?

A.He started traveling at an early age.

B.He was once shot in the arm.

C.His website inspires others a lot.

D.He used to work as a salesman.

All things change except barbers, the ways of barbers, and the surroundings of barbers. These never change. What one experiences in a barber’s shop the first time he enters one is what he always experiences in barbers’ shops afterward till the end of his days.

I got shaved this morning as usual. A man approached the door from Jones Street as I approached it from Main--a thing that always happens. I hurried up, but it was of no use; he entered the door one little step ahead of me, and I followed in and saw him take the only empty chair, the one headed by the best barber. It always happens so. I sat down, hoping that I might sit in the chair belonging to the better of the remaining two barbers, for he was a bit ahead. I watched the probabilities with strong interest. When I saw that No. 2 was gaining on No. 1, my interest grew to solicitude (擔(dān)心). When No. 1 was gradually losing the race, my solicitude rose to anxiety. When No. 1 caught up again, and both were about to finish and say “Next!” first, my very breath stood still with the suspense. But when I saw that he had lost the race by a single instant, I rose angrily and quitted the shop, to keep from falling into the hands of No. 2; for I have none of that firmness that enables a man to look calmly into the eyes of a waiting barber and tell him he will wait for his fellow-barber’s chair.

I stayed out fifteen minutes, and then went back, hoping for better luck. Unfortunately, all the chairs were occupied now, and four men sat waiting, silent, and looking bored, as men always do who are waiting their turn in a barber’s shop. I sat down and waited.

At last my turn came. A voice said “Next!” and I give in to No. 2, of course. It always happens so. I smiled and said that I was in a hurry, and it affected him as strongly as if he had never heard it.

He explored my hair with his claws and suggested that it needed trimming(修剪). I said I did not want it trimmed. He explored again and said it was pretty long for the present style. I said I had had it cut only a week before. He stopped for a moment, and then asked “who cut it?” I stared at him from the mirror and replied “You did!”. Then a dog-fight attracted his attention, and he ran to the window and stayed and watched it…

1.The author left the barber’s shop mainly because ___________.

A. he would like to wait for “No. 1” outside

B. he would rather be served by the best barber

C. he lacked the courage to tell “No. 2” his intention

D. he was angry at the slow speed of “No. 1”

2.What is the change of the author’s attitude from the moment he went into the barber’s to the moment he left it?

A. Disappointed---Anxious---Hopeful---Angry.

B. Disappointed --Hopeful---Anxious---Angry.

C. Hopeful--- Sad --- Anxious ---Angry.

D. Hopeful--- Anxious --- Angry --- Sad.

3.The underlined word “suspense” in the 2nd paragraph probably means ________.

A. loneliness                                             B. excitement

C. anxiety                                                D. hope

4.What is likely to happen next?

A. The author lost his temper.

B. “No. 2” ran out of his patience.

C. The author was well-served by “No. 2”.

D. The author also went to see the dog-fight.
