In the winter months the temperature in most of Canada usually stays below 0℃. However, in some parts of Canada, such as southern British Columbia, the temperature rarely goes below 0℃. In most areas where people live, snow will be on the ground from mid-December to the middle of March. Though Canada’s winter may be much colder and longer than you are used to, it can be very enjoyable. For many Canadians, being active in winter is an important part of enjoying life. There are many outdoor winter activities, including skiing, ice fishing, walking, and skating. Joining in one of these activities may help you appreciate winter and enjoy your time outside in the snow.
Dressing for winter.
During winter in Canada, you will need warm clothing. If possible, arrive with these items or be prepared to buy them soon after your arrival. You will need:
*A warm waterproof(防水) boots.
*A scarf(圍巾) for your neck.
*A hat that covers your ears.
*Gloves for your hands.
*Thick winter coats, pants(褲子) and sweaters.
Layers(層) keep you warm.
It’s a good idea to layer your clothing by, for example, wearing a T-shirt and a sweater underneath a jacket. If you become too hot, it is always easier to remove a piece of clothing than to add another. On the West Coast, prepare to dress for cool rainy or snowy weather. You will need:
*A warm waterproof coat.
*Waterproof hats.
*An umbrella.
*Rain boots or snow boots.

Robert Frost was at heart a mean-spirited human being, not the kind of man one would expect to write poetry. He was born in San Francisco. Frost entered Dartmouth University in 1893, but dropped out, and switched to Harvard, which he attended for two years. He started a brief teaching career, where he was inspired to become a poet by some of his students’ work. Frost stopped teaching and became a farmer. During this time he wrote numerous poems, and a couple of short stories. While he was a farmer he started to think seriously about becoming a famous poet.
In almost all of his poems, Frost wrote in the first person. The first widely-read poem that he published was called My Butterfly. At first his audience was very small, but with his Collected Poems he became famous. Robert Frost received almost all the awards that there were for poetry. His poetry describes the forces of nature, and the violence and deep emotional(情感的) needs of human beings, which reflect the experiences of his childhood.
Robert Frost will always be known as one of the best poets in history. His way of putting emotion and violence into words is remarkable(非同尋常的). His talent for poetry is natural-born and he had discovered this when he started to farm. Most people know that Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win it twice. However, few people know that she was also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner.
Born in September, 1897, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies’ two daughters. Along with nine other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. She finished her high school education at the College of Sevigne in Paris.
Irene entered the University of Paris in 1914 to prepare for a degree in mathematics and physics. When World War I began, Irene went to help her mother, who was using X-ray facilities(設(shè)備) to help save the lives of wounded soldiers. In 1918, Irene became her mother’s assistant at the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in love and were married in 1926. Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later.
Like her mother, Irene combined family and career. Like her mother, Irene was awarded a Nobel Prize, along with her husband, in 1935. Unfortunately, also like her mother, she developed leukemia because of her work with radioactivity(輻射能). Irene Joliot-Curie died from leukemia on March 17, 1956.

閱讀下面短文并回答問題,然后將答案寫在橫線上(請(qǐng)注意問題后的詞數(shù)要求)
[1]Everyone wants something in life, love, money, success and so on. Yet too many people fail to achieve their goals, and nearly all of them are for the same reason.
[2]It‘s true that terrible things do happen to people during their lives, though no fault of their own, which may make them feel upset. Generally speaking, however, getting what you really want out of life is just a matter of the following three simple steps.
[3]Firstly, you have to decide what it is you want the most. But do not make a list of wishes; try to focus on one thing at a time. If you‘re not sure about where you want to go, you‘d better think it over first and not hurry to perform.
[4]Secondly, create an action plan. This will be your map for getting from ”___________________” to ”where you want to go”. You know what you want, and what steps you are going to take to get it. For example, if you want a better job, start with a skills assessment(評(píng)價(jià)) and maybe some extra training. Then you‘ll need to sell yourself and your skills either to your present employer or to a new employer.
[5]Other goals will require a bit more thought. Some will really get you lost without a clue of how to get there. Not to worry, though, books, biographies and such, can be of great help.
[6]The third and final step is to execute. Do what you planned. Take the steps you outlined on your road map and keep going on all the time. If you run into some people who are against you, simply ignore them.
[7]Never give up the goal. Keep pushing. Whatever you do, do not lose heart until you have what you desire in your hands. Never think that you can’t turn your dream into a reality.
