My dad also taught me,by example, that a healthy lifestyle is important. He was hardly ever sick. But I don’l think my dad ever even had a cup of coffee. He barely touched alcohol.
He would say,“Boonnie, your voice is a reflection of your overall physical well-being.So if you want to sing well, take better care of yourself.” If I became hoarse(嘶啞)or caught a cold,he didn’t blame me directly:“Well,Bonnie, you know,if you’d get to sleep a little earlier, that would probably be a good idea.”When I decided to get unexcitable about 18 years ago,he told me.“See,
Bonnie,it's so great to see you in such strong voice all the time.”
He just did not complain, even when he was uncomfortable toward the end, from the pneumonia that eventually took his life.He simply made a choice to be positive and not negative.
I am so glad that we had the chance to perform together.I was touched that he tried singing my music, even though the bluesy style didn’t come naturally to him. Then, when I had so much
Grmnmy success with my album Nick of Time in 1990,I realized. Hey,I have one of the greatest singers of all time in my family.I was very nervous about doing the Boston Pops show on TV with my dad.To calm me,he said,“Bonnie,a beautiful song is a beautiful song.Just believe it.”I looked in my dad’s eyes, and there we were singing the Irving Berlia song with the lvric.Of all the duets I've done.that one wiU always be a highlight.

B
LOS ANGELES-British singing sensation Susan Boyle’s first album quickly climbed to No. 1 on U.S. album charts on Wednesday with sales of 701,000 copies, beating new releases by Adam Lambert and Rihanna and becoming the best-selling debut(首次演出) of 2009. Boyle, 48, a frumpy Scottish singer, who became an international YouTube phenomenon after appearing on TV show “Britain’s Got Talent”, also topped the British album charts earlier this week.
Her “I Dreamed a Dream” release through Sony Music Entertainment, marked the best U.S. opening of a female artist's debut album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991, Billboard.com said. It was also the fastest selling album in Britain this year and has topped the charts in Australia and Ireland.
Billboard said only one album in SoundScan’s tracking history had seen a bigger opening week than Boyle. U.S. rapper Snoop Dogg’s album “Doggystyle” sold 803,000 copies in its first week in 1993—before traditional album sales began tumbling(falling rapidly) in the face of piracy(盜版) and a shift to digital sales.
Although Boyle finally failed to win “Britain’s Got Talent”, her April trial hearing for the show has been viewed more than 300 million times on the Internet.
In a good week for stars of TV talent shows, “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert’s debut album “For Your Entertainment”, also released through Sony, debuted at No.3 on the Billboard 200 with 198,000 copies sold. Lambert’s strong showing followed headline news coverage of his bad televised live performance at the American Music Awards 10 days ago in which he aroused oral sex with a dancer and kissed a male keyboard player.
R&B singer Rihanna’s “Rated R”, her first studio album since being attacked by her then-boyfriend Chris Brown in February, bowed in at No.4 with 181,000 copies—the best sales week in the 21-year-old singer’s career.
Italian singer Andrea Bocelli held onto the No.2 spot for a third week with his “My Christmas” album with 218,000 new copies sold during the week, SoundScan said.
60. According to the passage, what albums were released through Sony Music Entertainment?

C. Rated R and Doggystyle.
D. My Christmas and For Your Entertainment.

62. Who may perform crazily and leave audience a bad impression?
A. Susan Boyle.       B. Andrea Bocelli.     C. Rihanna.        D. Adam Lambert.
63. From the passage we can conclude _______.
A. The albums could have sold better if it had not been for piracy and a shift to digital sales

科目:高中英語 來源:2012-2013學(xué)年天津市天津一中高一下學(xué)期期中考試英語試卷(帶解析) 題型:閱讀理解

That Upper class people generally have more educational opportunities, greater financial security, and better jobs than people from lower social classes, but that doesn’t mean they’re more skilled at everything. A new study finds, surprisingly, that lower class people are better at reading the emotions of others.
The researchers were inspired by observing that, for lower class people, success depends more on how much they can rely on other individuals. For example, if you can’t afford to  buy support services, you have to rely on your neighbors or relatives to watch the kids while you’re busy.
One experiment researched on volunteers who worked at a university: some had graduated from college and others had not. Researchers used the educational level as an indicator(標(biāo)志)for social classes. The volunteers did a test of emotion perception(感知), in which they were instructed to look at pictures of faces and indicate which emotions each face was displaying. People with more education performed worse on the task than people with less education.
In another study, university students who were of higher social status had a more difficult time accurately(準(zhǔn)確)reading the emotions of a stranger.
These results suggest that people of upper-class status aren’t very good at recognizing the emotions other people are feeling. This is because they remember their upper status and they think they can solve their problems without relying on others.
In the third experiment, people were made to feel that they were at a lower social class than they actually were, and they got better at reading emotions.
“The differences between upper-class people and lower-class people are not something ingrained(根深蒂固的),” Kraus says. “It’s the cultural environment leading to them.” This work helps show that the traditional image of the classes is wrong. “It’s not true that a lower-class person, no matter what kind of person, is going to be less intelligent than an upper-class person. It’s all about the social environment the person lives in, and the specific challenges the person faces. If you can change the environment even temporarily, social class differences in lots of behaviors can be removed.”
【小題1】According to the passage, when lower-class people meet problems, they tend to ______.

A.turn to othersB.work even harder
C.feel more frustratedD.learn from upper-class people
【小題2】Why did people perform better in emotion perception in the third experiment?
A.Because they became less independent.
B.Because they didn’t know they were cheated.
C.Because they felt they must ask for help from other.
D.Because they were made to understand lower-class people.
【小題3】What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Upper-class people are not skilled at everything.
B.Upper-class people have trouble recognizing others’ emotion.
C.Lower-class people need to be given more employment opportunities.
D.There are many differences between upper-class people and lower-class people.

I was feeling a little blue because my mother had been laid off from her job and she had lots of bills to pay. It left me wondering what was going to happen to us now. But it reassured me some when my mother told me she was relieved to be leaving since her boss wasn't the nicest person to be around.

I got off the college shuttle bus and started walking. That's when I heard piano music and singing rising above the noise of the people and the traffic. I walked a little slower so I could find out where it was coming from. Through the crowd I saw a young lady sitting at a piano with a carriage next to her.[來源:Zxxk.Com]

She was singing songs about love, keeping on trying, and not underestimating the power within yourself. The way she was singing comforted me a bit. I stood there watching her play for about fifteen minutes, thinking that it must take courage to perform on your own in the middle of a crowded New York ferry terminal.

So I stood there listening.

She must have felt my presence because she would occasionally look in my direction. By now I was telling myself that if she could perform in front of hundreds of people she didn't know then I could at least tell her how good she sounded. I walked over and put some money in her carriage and she said, "Thank you." Instead of continuing my way home, I said to her, "I have been going through a rough time lately, but you've made me hopeful again."

"I'm happy that I could help," she replied. "Why are you so sad?"

"Well, my mum told me she had got fired from her job, and that made me sad. I'm not so sure what to do ..."

"You see, here's the problem," she explained. "The way you were walking, your head was down. Don't look defeated, because opportunity comes in different ways and if your head is down you might never see it. You should smile more ... lift your head up."

I smiled faintly, amazed by how she was encouraging me. So, I asked her, "Why are you playing the piano in the middle of a crowded place? I've seen you do this more than once."

She explained to me that she sees a lot of negative people in the world and she tries to alleviate the pain and bring more positivity by sharing motivational music. She told me that when she wasn't making music she studied psychology. So, that was how she knew some of the things she was telling me.

I smiled a little wider because I knew that she was doing a good thing. So, after that we parted, my heart touched and lightened by a musical soul!
