Don’t you just love ice skating every winter?I am sure, that since winter is approaching, your skates are set to come out, just waiting to be used.Impress your friends with your new trick on how to iceskate backwards with the help of these tips.Skating backwards on ice is a bit difficult but once you master the basic, there’s nothing like it.Follow the steps given below and you will be able to skate backwards in no time.
Stand Straight
The first thing that you need to do is,stand straight. If you feel that you are falling backwards, then just put your chin(下巴) up and slightly bend your knees.Don’t worry;this happens to all.
Confidence Is What You Need
The most important step while learning how to skate backwards,is having enough confidence in yourself and in what you are doing. How can you achieve this?By practice.Just practice rolling backwards down a gentle slop every single day or just by pushing off from a wall or something of that sort. But before you do that, make sure that the place where you are practicing is free from any kind of debris(碎片) because otherwise, you could land up in the hospital due to some accident. While going backwards, just get used to the feeling of moving backwards. One of the important ice skating tips and techniques is that if you feel that you are losing your balance, then scissor(做剪式運(yùn)動(dòng)) your skates.Keep practicing this till you are confident about it.
Maintain Speed
Confident now?Great! Now the next step is to maintain your speed. While rolling in a straight line with one skate, with the other try sculling(劃槳),that is,keep pushing yourself backwards with an outwards stroke(滑動(dòng)).Now bring the skate which you were using to scull, and then again, repeat the same process.Make sure that you put most of your weight on the skate which is moving straight and not the one with which you are sculling. Now,try the same thing using the other foot.Again keep doing this till you are confident enough.
Increase Your Speed Now
Once you are confident that you can scull with either foot, the next thing that you have to do is increase your speed.Try some of your own tricks now.Scull with either foot or with both at the same time.
Scull and Be Aware
While you keep one foot straight, keep sculling with the other. You can do that simultaneously with both feet.Concentrate on what you are doing but don’t get so involved, that you don’t see where you are going. If you are not watching your back, you might just bang against something or someone.

Mom was right! If you say thank you,for even the smallest gift or slightest show of kindness, you’ll feel happy.
Gratitude(感謝),says Robert A.Emmons,a professor of psychology at the University of California,is an important element of happiness. In his recent book,Thanks!,Emmons uses the first major study on gratitude to prove mom’s point. In acknowledging and developing this muchignored expression of thankfulness,he explains how people have benefited—even improved their health.
As one of the leading scholars of the positive psychology movement,he admits gratitude may be difficult to express. He advises you to begin by admitting that life is good and full of events and elements that make daily existence a wonder.Second, recognize that the source of life’s goodness is more than just you. That source may be your mom,a friend, partner, child, colleague at work or play,or any combination of these.
Gratitude is always otherdirected, notes Emmons. You can be pleased or angry with yourself and feel guilty about doing something wrong, but you can never be grateful to or for yourself.
Expressing gratitude shouldn’t be a reaction;it should be a state of mind.To feel grateful when life is a breeze and you have more than you need is easy.To feel grateful in time of crisis—anger, hatred and bitterness—is easier. Also, too many people are aware of life’s blessings only after these are lost. The voices expressing gratitude from his studies of individuals are many.
It’s crisis and chaos—danger, disease, disability and death—that bring many individuals to realize just how dependent they are on others.Yet it’s the way each of us begins life and ends it.It’s too bad that so many people waste those decades in between labouring under the illusion(幻覺(jué)) they are selfsufficient, says Emmons.
To enable and embrace gratitude,Emmons encourages the readers of Thanks! to keep a gratitude diary. He even provides easytofollow directions on how to practise and develop gratitude.
I’m not a reader or advocate of selfhelp books, but I am thankful for the reference I found in a newspaper article to the research Emmons was conducting on gratitude involving organ donors and recipients(接受者).The chance discovery led me to this book.
Mom implied that kindness seems to find its way back to the giver because life really is all about giving, receiving and repaying. So I’ll pay attention to her professional advice and say:Thank you, professor Emmons.
小題1:What is the text mainly discussed?
A.There are many ways of being thankful.
B.Gratitude is important to happiness.

D.Being thankful will keep you fit.

These days, people who do manual work often receive far more money than people who work in offices. People who work in offices are frequently referred to as “white-collar workers” for the simple reason that they       wear a collar and tie to go to work. Such is human nature, that a great many people are often         to sacrifice higher pay for the privilege of becoming white-collar workers. This can give rise to curious situations, as it did in the case of Alfred Bloggs who worked as a(an)      for the Ellesmere Corporation.
When he got married, Alf was too embarrassed to say anything to his wife about his job. He     told her that he worked for the Corporation. Every morning, he left home     in a smart black suit. He then changed into overalls and    the next eight hours as a dustman. Before returning home at night, he took a shower and changed back into his suit. Alf did this for over two years and his fellow dustmen kept his        . Alf's wife has never discovered that she married a dustman and she never will, for Alf has just found       job. He will soon be working in an office. He will earn much less than he used to, but he feels that his rise in      is well worth the loss of money. From now on, he will wear a suit all day and others will call him 'Mr. Bloggs'        'Alf'.

It seems hard to watch someone yawn(打哈欠) and not to yawn ourselves. Even reading about yawning can make you do it. Now, a new study has found why yawning has such a powerful force.
Yawning when others yawn, the study suggests, is a sign of pity and a form of social connection. Kids don’t develop this deeply rooted behavior until around age four, the study found. Kids with autism (自閉癥) are less likely to catch yawns. In the most serious cases, they never do. Yawning might help doctors to see whether the children are developing rightly. The work could also lead to a better understanding of the ways that people communicate and connect.
"Emotional infection seems to be a born thing that connects us together," said Molly Helt, a graduate student in psychology at the University of Connecticut. "Yawning may be part of that." Inspiration for her study came when she tried to get her own autistic son to clear his ears on an airplane. She repeatedly yawned at him, hoping he would yawn back. He never did.
"The fact that autistic kids don’t do it might mean they’re really missing out on that emotional connection with people around them," she said. "The biggest thing people try to figure out after birth is how we become humans and understand that humans have minds that are different from others’," she added. "Autistic people never seem to understand that."
Like infectious (有感染力的)laughter and crying, scientists have found that yawning is a shared experience that promotes social connection. Helt said it could fight stress after a period of being nervous and spread a feeling of calm through a group.
