People with bigger brains ftend to score higher on standardized tests of intelligence, according to new study findings.
However, the study author Dr Michael A.McDaniel of the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond emphasized that these findings represent a general trend, and people with small heads should not automatically believe they are less intelligent. For instance, Albert Einstein’s brain was “not particularly large”, McDaniel noted. “There’s some relationship between brain size and intelligence on the average, but there’s plenty of room for exceptions,” he said.
Interest in the relationship between brain size and intelligence grew in the1830s, when German anatomist(解剖學(xué)家) Frederich Tiedmann wrote that he believed there was “an unquestionable connection between the size of the brain and the mental energy displayed by the individual man”. Since that statement, scientists have conducted numerous studies to determine if Tiedmann’s assertion was, in fact, correct. Most studies have looked into the link between head size and intelligence. More recently, however, researchers have published additional studies on brain size and intelligence, measured using MRI scan(核磁共振成像掃描).
For his study, McDaniel analyzed more than 20 studies that looked into the relationship between brain size and intelligence in a total of 1,530 people. The studies showed that on the average, people with larger brain volume tended to be more intelligent. The relationship between brain volume and intelligence was stronger in women than men, and in adults than in children. McDaniel notes in the journal Intelligence.
McDaniel is not sure why the relationship was stronger for adults and women. “Other research has shown that women, on the average, tend to have smaller brains than men, but score just as well—if not higher—in tests of intelligence,” he said.
McDaniel insisted that the relationship between brain size and intelligence is not a “perfect” one. “One can certainly find lots of examples of smaller-sized people who are highly intelligent,” he said, “But, on the average, the relationship holds.”
. What does the text mainly talk about?
A.MRI scans are applied to intelligence.
B. On the average, a bigger brain means higher IQ.

By mentioning Albert Einstein, the writer wants to show .
A. Albert Einstein was intelligent
B. the result of intelligence test was false
C. being hard working is more important than intelligence
D. brain size doesn’t necessarily decide the level of intelligence
The underlined word “assertion” in Para. 3 probably means “ ”.
A. experiment B. statement C proof D. demand
After Frederich Tiedmann wrote his article, .
A. many scientists agreed with him
B. numerous studies have failed to prove his idea
C.MRI scan became popularly used
D. lots of researchers were interested in the connections between head size and intelligence
According to the text, Dr McDaniel’s study .
A. proves Tiedmann’s idea was completely true
B. shows women are smarter than men
C. involves many studies and a lot of people
D. explains why people with smaller brains are clever

WASHINGTON — It is announced Friday that White House visitor records will be opened up on a regular basis for the first time in modern history, providing the public an unusually detailed look at who gets the opportunity to help shape American policy at the highest levels.
“Americans have a right to know whose voices are being heard in the policymaking process,” the president said in a written statement issued by the White House while he vacationed with his family at Camp David.
By the end of the year, the White House will begin posting online every month the names of the people who visited in the last 90 to 120 days. Each person’s full name will be listed, along with the date and time they entered and left and the name of the person they visited. About 70,000 to 100,000 people visit the White House each month, and the records will include tourists as well as people conducting business.
The White House pointed out several exceptions to the policy: “purely personal guests” of the Obama family; those cases in which the disclosure(透露) of visitors’ names “would threaten national safety interests”; and those who come for “particularly sensitive meetings,” like candidates for a Supreme Court nomination(提名). Officials said only a “small number” will fit in the latter category(類別), and their names would eventually be disclosed after they are no longer secret, like after a nomination is publicly announced. Moreover, they said, the number of undisclosed visitors will be disclosed, to make clear how few they are.
【小題1】Why will the White House visitor records be open to the public?
A.To attract more visitors to the White House. |
B.To allow people to know more about the life of the Obama family. |
C.To let the public know who are influencing the policies. |
D.To ask the public help correct the policies made by the government. |
A.All the visitors’ names will be posted online soon after their visits |
B.Not all visitors are allowed to visit the White House |
C.Some visitors’ names can be found online until they’re not secret |
D.The records of the visitors will be kept for at least 4 months |
A.A tourist. | B.A businessman. | C.A foreign student. | D.A foreign minister. |
A.The White House will open the records of the visitors to the public. |
B.In America more and more people are becoming policy makers. |
C.The Americans have a right to know who are making policies. |

Temperature is measured by means of a thermometer (溫度計(jì)). One general form of thermometer depends upon the fact that most solids and liquids expand as their temperature rises. There are one or two exceptions. There is, for instance, a kind of steel called invar (from “invariable”) which does not change its dimensions as temperature changes; it is valuable for making pendulums (鐘擺), since, if the length of a pendulum changes, its time of vibration changes. It is also used for making very accurate measuring scales. In both cases, then, changes of atmospheric temperature have no effect if invar is used.
Another exception is that very odd liquid, water, which has many strange properties (特性). As water gets colder it contracts (收縮), which is ordinary behavior, until it reaches the temperature of 30℃. above freezing point. After that, as it gets colder, it expands. This is fortunate---for considering the freezing of a pond. As the water on top gets colder, it shrinks; and so, volume for volume, it becomes heavier and sinks. This goes on until all the pond is at 30℃, but after that, as the water becomes colder it expands. Therefore the colder water stays on top and freezes, covering the pond with ice. If the water went on contracting down to the freezing point, the pond would become a solid block of ice in the end. This would not worry people who live in hot climates, but it would be very serious for those who live in cold climates, especially for those who want to break the ice and catch fish which live in the cold water beneath.
1. Invar is valuable for making pendulums because _______.
A. it can hardly change its shape or size as temperature changes.
B. it will change its dimensions without the change of temperature.
C. its time of vibration doesn’t change if its length changes.
D. its time of vibration does not change if its length changes.
2. As water gets colder after reaching the temperature of 30℃. it will _______.
A. contract B. shrink C. expand D. freeze
3. Which of the following statements is true, according to this passage?
A. Only invar can be used to make a thermometer.
B. Only water can be used to make a thermometer.
C. Both invar and water can be used to make a thermometer.
D. Neither invar nor water can be used to make a thermometer.
4.The best title of this passage is most likely to be _____.
A. Temperature Measurement B. Two Exceptions
C. Uses of Invar D. Properties of Water

ALBANY,New York—Students who rely on working at night to improve their
grades might want to sleep on that strategy: A new survey in the US says those who never study all night have slightly higher grades than those who do.
A survey of 120 students at St.Lawrence University found that students who had never pulled an allnighter on average had higher grades than those who had. The survey found those who did not study through the night had a grade point average of 3.2 compared to 2.95 for those who did.
The study, by assistant professor of psychology Pamela Thacher, is to be included in the January issue of Behavioral Sleep Medicine.
“It's not a big difference, but it's pretty striking, ” Thacher said, “I am primarily a sleep researcher and I know nobody thinks clearly at 4∶00 in the morning. You think you can do,but you can't.”
Many college students, of course, have inadequate or irregular sleep, for reasons ranging from excessive caffeine to poor time management.
“A lot of students were under the impression that allnighters were a very useful tool for accomplishing work, and that caffeine intake was very useful in meeting deadlines and stuff like that, ”said Mr Chatani, who had a 3.4 grade point average last term.
Dr Howard Weiss, a physician at St.Peter's Sleep Center in Albany, said the study results made sense.
“Certainly that data is out there showing that short sleep duration absolutely interferes with concentration and performance on objective testing, ”he said.
“Some night owls do get good grades, of course, which may be explained by circadian (晝夜節(jié)律的,生理節(jié)奏的) rhythms, ”Weiss said, “Some people have different 24hour body clocks from others, and may do better depending on classes and testing time.”
63.The purpose of the passage is to tell us
A. the bad effects of pulling an allnighter
B. pulling an allnighter leads to sleep problems
C. Thacher's doubt about allnighters
D. allnighters influence students' grades
64. According to Thacher's study,around 4 o'clock in the morning is a time when .
A. one can think more clearly
B. one has his/her best memory
C. one can't learn efficiently
D. one's brain falls into a period of deep sleep
65.What can we know from Dr Howard Weiss' words?
A. Thacher's study is not convincing enough.
B. He believes in Thacher's study.
C. Thacher's study makes no sense.
D. Thacher should take exceptions into consideration.
