The impression you make at the beginning of an interview is very important. Employers often decide to hire someone in the first three minutes of the interview. They judge you by your appearance, attitude (態(tài)度)and manners.
A friendly smile when you walk into the room is important. A smile shows a confident(自信的)and positive attitude.
When you introduce yourself, make eye contact with the interviewer. Some interviewers offer a handshake. Others don’t.
Try to be as natural as possible. But pay attention to your body language. The way you sit, walk, gesture, use your voice and show feelings on your face is all part of your body language. It makes the interviewer know how you feel about yourself and the situation you are in. Are you feeling positively about yourself?  Your abilities?  Your interest in the job?
Speak clearly and loudly enough. Show interest and enthusiasm in your voice. When you speak, look at the interviewer. Also, don’t say negative things about yourself,or former employer.
Listen to questions carefully. If you don’t understand a question, ask the interviewer to repeat or explain:
“I’m sorry,but I didn’t catch that.”
“I’m not sure exactly what you mean.”
Almost everyone is nervous in a job interview. Interviewers know that. They don’t expect you to be totally calm and relaxed. But they expect you to try to control your nervousness. They expect you to show confidence in your ability to do the job.
At the end of the interview, thank the interviewer for her or his time.
It’s a good idea to send a short thank-you letter right after the interview,or deliver it by hand.
Phone the company if you have not heard anything after one week. Ask if they have made a decision about the job.
Good luck!

It was two years ago in winter when I went with my family to Engadine in Switzerland. The journey by car was pleasant until we reached the bottom of the Julier Pass(尤里爾隘口) when it began to snow.
Suddenly, the weather became very bad and soon we found ourselves in a storm. On the top of the pass, the visibility(能見(jiàn)度) was almost zero and we had to guess where the crash barrier(防撞護(hù)欄) was. It was terrible, the snow turned into ice and stuck to the windows despite the heating being set at full blast. Several times I had to get out of the car to clear the ice from the windshield(擋風(fēng)玻璃).
But the way down towards Silvaplana was less stressful and we knew that we would arrive in paradise(樂(lè)園). It snowed without interruption the first day of our holidays and not being used to this natural weather, we found it simply magical to watch so much snow falling down on the mountains.
The following day, in this large, amazing area made up of frozen lakes and rivers between white mountains, we discovered a little hut next to the cross-country ski tracks, close to a farm. There was a fridge in this heated wooden cabin that contained milk, cheese and yoghurts for self-service. There was a list of prices for each item. You took what you wanted, then wrote down the total on a notebook what you had taken and put the money into an open box and if necessary took the change.
Where else could you find such trust? As I’ve already told you, Engadine is a paradise.

Tomorrow was his girlfriend’s birthday and the young man was having a difficult time deciding on a present for her. She already had more clothes than she knew what to do with them, so he couldn’t get any kind of apparel. She never ate sweets, so candy was out of the question. What then? He had a very special reason for wanting to impress her with just the right gift, for tomorrow he was going to make an offer of marriage to her. He finally decided on perfume(香水). All girls liked perfume. That raised another problem, however. What kind did she prefer? He couldn’t ask her because that would ruin the surprise.

At last the young man hit upon a brilliant idea. That afternoon, pretending to take his girlfriend’s fox terrier(小獵狗),Fritz, for a walk, the young man and the dog went directly to the perfume counter of the town’s biggest department store. Good! There was a large array(長(zhǎng)列)of perfume. He beckoned(招呼)a clerk, asking her to open a large number of bottles and wave the stoppers (塞子)under the dog’s nose. Nestled(依偎于) in the young man’s arms, the terrier began to be restless and bored as this seemingly meaningless game went on. Then Fritz suddenly became frisky, wiggling in the young man’s arms and barking excitedly, as the clerk waved one stopper under its nose.

“I’ll take that one,” said the young man to the clerk. The price was high, but it was worth it, he thought.

“ My favorite perfume!” said the delighted girl the next evening as she unwrapped the package. “ How did you know?” she asked, dabbing(輕擦)some perfume behind each ear.

“ Intuition(直覺(jué)), I guess.”said the young man, deciding that it wasn’t exactly wrong to tell a lie at that time. One day, after they were married, he would admit that his intuition had really been the little dog named Fritz.

Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. “I was a clothes addict,” he jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled.” Today David wears casual clothes—khaki pants and sports shirt—to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. “I’m working harder than ever,” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable.”

More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work. In the United States, the change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday, but only on Friday. This became known as “dress-down Friday” or “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing.” said business consultant Maisly Jones.

Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. “A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work,” says the owner of a software company, “so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale(士氣). Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative effect on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.”

1.David Smith refers to himself as having been “a clothes addict,” because __________.

A.he often wore khaki pants and a sports shirt

B.he couldn’t stand a clean appearance

C.he wanted his clothes to look neat all the time

D.he didn’t want to spend much money on clothes

2.David Smith wears casual clothes now, because __________.

A.they make him feel at ease when working

B.he cannot afford to buy expensive clothes

C.he looks handsome in casual clothes

D.he no longer works for any company

3.According to this passage, which of the following statements is FALSE?

A.Many employees don’t like a conservative dress code.

B.Comfortable clothes make employees more productive.

C.A casual clothes code is welcomed by young employees.

D.All the employers in the U.S. are for casual office wear.

4.According to this passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Company workers started to dress down about twenty years ago.

B.Dress-down has become an everyday phenomenon since the early 1990s.

C.“Dress-down Friday” was first given as a favor from employers.

D.Many workers want to wear casual clothes to impress people.

5.In this passage, the following advantages of casual office wear are mentioned except __________.

A.saving employees’ money

B.making employees more attractive

C.improving employees’ motivation

D.making employees happier
