In most Chinese tea villages, March is the time of year in which locals start to pick and process tea. The usually quiet villages suddenly become crowded centers of activity, as people take out special tools and prepare for tea processing. In some villages, local residents hold traditional ceremonies, thanking heaven for its blessing. The price of tea picked in March is extremely high because it is fresh, tender and contains multiple trace elements.
China has been famous for tea production since ancient times. Of the goods transported and traded along the Old Silk Road linking China to the Middle East and Europe, the importance of tea was matched only by silk. China produces Oolong, black, green, white, yellow and dark tea. The Oolong, green and black varieties are most famous for their high quality.

ANGELA Chang didn’t think it would be so hard to turn singing into a career. She went to many different record companies. But the Taiwanese girl was always turned down for looking too young and small.
“I’d never had such difficulties before,” Chang said. “My confidence was smashed (粉碎) to pieces.”
Chang's talent was finally recognized in 2002. When she got a contract (合同), she burst into tears.
She soon became a star. Her first album Over the Rainbow (《飛越彩虹》) sold very well. She won many awards.
“You wouldn't believe such a powerful voice could come from such a small body,” said one musician after hearing Chang sing. “She has a special voice. You can't forget it.”
Never give up
But the 25-year-old has other talents too. Chang is also an actress. She has starred in the popular Taiwanese TV dramas, My MVP Valentine (《MVP情人》) and At Dolphin Bay (《海豚灣戀人》). Many people remember her ordinary-girl parts in the dramas.
But acting is difficult. Chang once acted so badly that she was nearly fired. Another time it took her 27 tries to get a scene right.
“I cried when I got back home,” Chang said. “But I knew that I wouldn't always fail. You only fail when you give up.”
Now with four albums behind her-Over the Rainbow, Aurora (《歐若拉》), Pandora (《潘朵拉》) and Flower in the Wonderland, it's clear that Chang and music were made for each other. As she sings in one song: “I have a pair of invisible (隱形的) wings. They fly me to the skies and give me hope.”

Grandma Moses is among the most famous twentieth-century painters of the United States, yet she did not start painting until she was in her late seventies. As she once said of herself: “I would never sit back in a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me.” No one could have had a more productive old age.
She was born Anna Mary Robertson on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls. At twelve she left home and was in domestic(家庭的) service until, at twenty-seven, she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State, at Eagle Bridge. She had ten children, of whom five survived; her husband died in 1927.
Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery(刺繡) pictures as a hobby, but only changed to oils in old age because her hands had become too stiff(硬的) to sew and she wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at a local market and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought everything she painted. Three of the pictures exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930s and her death she produced some 2,000 pictures: detailed and lively portrayals(描繪) of the country life she had known for so long, with a wonderful sense of colour and form. “I think really hard till I think of something really pretty, and then I paint it.” she said.

A. graduated from college               B. examined the condition of the house

In 1909 an English newspaper offered £ 1,000 to the first man to fly across the English Channel in an aeroplane. Today, modern jets cross it in minutes. But at that time it still seemed a good distance. The race to win the money soon became a race between two men. Both were very colourful.
One was Louis Bleriot. He owned a factory in France that made motor car lamps. He was already well known as a pilot because he had had accidents several times. Some people laughed at him. One man said, “He may not be the first to fly across the Channel but he will certainly be the first to die in an accident!” But Bleriot was really a good and brave pilot. He also had many good ideas about aeroplane design.
The other man was Hubert Latham. He was half French and half English. He took up flying when his doctors told him he had only a year to live. “Oh, well,” he said, “if I’ m going to die soon, I think I shall have a dangerous and interesting life now.” Latham was the first to try the flight  across the Channel. Ten kilometres from the French coast, his plane had some trouble. It fell down into the water and began to sink under the water. A boat reached Latham just in time. He was sitting calmly on the wing and was coolly lighting a cigarette. Bleriot took off six days later. He flew into some very bad weather and very low cloud. He somehow got to the English side and landed in a farmer’s field. When he did so, a customs (海關(guān)) officer rushed up to his plane. Planes have changed since then, but customs officers have not. “Have you anything to declare(報關(guān))?” The officer demanded.
48. Bleriot was well known as a pilot because ____ .
A. he was unusually brave
B. he was quite rich
C. he had many good ideas about aeroplane design
D. he had had a few accidents
49. Why did Hubert Latham want to fly across the Channel?
A. He thought he could manage it easily.
B. He wanted to be the first one to cross the Channel.
C. He knew he only had a year to live.
D. He had always been interested in flying.
50. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Latham became a pilot on the doctor’s advice.
B. He was told he could live another year.
C. His plane had some trouble.
D. He was saved by a boat when his plane was sinking.

I am a member of our school’s volunteer association. During my freshman(大學(xué)一年級新生) year, I was asked to write up a plan for volunteers who assisted patients there. So I visited the hospice (末期病人療養(yǎng)所) several times. Later, I realized I could do more for the patients and so began volunteering.
52.___________________
When I was a freshman, I was not used to college life. I sometimes felt the hospice was like home. Here, many grannies treated me like their own relative, and I could feel strongly that I was needed. Just shaking hands made them come to life. I not only get great comfort from helping many patients get through the last period of their lives. I also learn a lot from their experiences.
53.___________________
You have to be prepared both mentally and physically. Most people at this hospice are facing death. So you have prepared to be patient and make them happy and relaxed. Also, persistence is needed. After seeing so many people here die, I know that persistence is hard. But you have to remember that you job is to help them feel less pain before death.
54.___________________
Good volunteers have something in common: They regard their job as a career, rather than some task that’s been assigned. They learn to enjoy what they are doing, no matter how boring it is. We have a volunteer who has been with us for more than a year. His job is translating letters from kids we helped. Even when he was busy with his classes, he would take a taxi to our office to pick up the letters. When we asked him why, he told us he enjoyed the kids’ stories and learned a lot from them.
55.___________________
Students are often very enthusiastic and direct. They give us feedback that helps us improve our work. And they value the opportunity we give them to broaden their horizons. However, they are still young and some are not responsible enough. And sometimes, they are lazy and careless.

第三部分 閱讀理解(共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)
Most painters discover a style(風(fēng)格) of painting that suits them and stick to that, especially if people admire their pictures. But Picasso, the great Spanish painter, was like a man who had not yet found his own particular style of painting. He kept on struggling to find the perfect expression till his death in 1973.
Some of Picasso's paintings are rich, soft coloured and beautiful. Others are ugly and cruel and strange. But such paintings allow us to imagine things for ourselves. They force us to say to ourselves, “What does he see that makes him paint like that?” And we begin to look beneath(在…之下) the surface of the things we see.
Picasso painted thousands of pictures in different styles. Sometimes he painted the natural look of things. Sometimes he seemed to break them apart and throw the pieces in our faces. He showed us what the mind knows as well as what the eye sees. At the age of 90 he remained as curious about the world as he had been when he was young. That is why people have called him “the youngest painter in the world”.

58. The sentence“sometimes he seemed to break them apart and throw the pieces in our faces” means _________.
A. sometimes he tore his pictures into pieces
B. he broke something he was painting and threw them away
C. sometimes he showed some broken pictures to others
D. things in some of his pictures seemed to be in disorder
59. Why have people called Picasso “the youngest painter in the world”?
A. Because he looked young when he was old.
B. Because he observed things with the eye and the mind.
C. Because he never stopped painting even when he was old.
D. Because he never gave up looking for something new.
60. What do you suppose the writer thinks of Picasso's paintings?
A. He doesn't understand some of them.
B. He thinks some of them are valuable, some are not.
C. He admires them, including the ugly ones.
D. He doesn't like some of them, but he admires the painter.

One day last winter we received our first huge snowfall. An hour later I decided to let my dog out. That was when I got the shock! My sidewalk was cleaned and my path too. I had no idea who did this good deed. I looked over to my neighbor's driveway where the husband stood,open-mouthed and surprised. His sidewalk was also cleared. I asked him who did it. He just shook his head and let me know that he had no idea.
A week later we had another snowfall and I promised to pay attention this time just in case we had another visit from our snow angel. It was a good plan, but I got busy inside and forgot to keep a look out. Sure enough when I remembered to look out the snow had once again been cleared away.
Now I became determined to find my guardian(保護人) of the snow. Some three weeks went by when the snow started to fall again. I went to get a book and sat at the window just as the snow tapered off and my reading was interrupted by the sound of a shovel(鏟子). I got to my feet to look out and was so choked up that I just stood there. My snow angel was an eight-year-old boy who lived a few houses away from me.
A month after the snows, I called him over and asked him if he knew of anybody who shoveled for me. He said, " I guess it was someone who likes you." So without taking credit for his good deed, he turned and left,
